Email to governors about gender instead of sex

DC is at a primary, does anyone have a well worded complaint that I can email to the head & governors about them using “gender” instead of “sex” in the equalities policy?

Here is the segment: “What is Equality? Equality is the principle of equal treatment for all people irrespective of their gender, ethnicity, disability, religious belief/ non-belief, sexual orientation, age, gender re assignment, marriage or civil partnership and .pregnancy or maternity status”

I used to be a capable person but my brain is fried from having too many small children who don’t sleep.

I was merely saying that for 7-11 year olds, it's not applicable. They have already tweaked the policy to apply to a school, so they are including statements which aren't applicable for that age group.

I think the section of the policy you quote is a balanced explanation of the protected characteristic. Whilst a GRC is for 18 or over, I am not aware that the protected characteristic has an age limit so it can apply to children.

The big question is what does the policy state about what the process is for a pupil who “makes their intention known”. Use the Cass Review that affirmation is not a neutral act. Focus on what happens in practice, i.e. which changing rooms will they use? Will there be a separate 3rd space for changing? Which sex will they do contact sports with? Consider it from both perspectives I.e boy to girl - impact on girl’s single sexual spaces/provisions and girl to boy impact on boy’s single sex spaces/provision.

I am GC, but from personal research believe there have always been a very small number of children who at a very early age (under 5) do display symptoms of gender dysphoria. Policies need to support these children without undermining sex based rights of other pupils.

I also believe there is an epidemic of children displaying symptoms of rapid onset gender dysphoria because they feel they don’t fit in or want to feel “normal” what ever that is. They may be on the autistic spectrum, be questioning their sexuality, peer pressure etc. and need to be supported (not affirmed) whilst they work out who they are. It is a minefield how to do this and there are no easy answers.

Writing policies is a skill, sadly a lot of policies around this subject are written by unskilled policy writers who have a particular perspective which leads to very poor policies.

The references to surgery, hormone treatment and GRCs wont apply to the children in the school (assuming doctors are doing their job right) but may apply to staff or parents. But even if not, it doesn’t make the policy incorrect in its description of what constitutes gender reassignment.
