Jo Bartosch on Trans Ideology and Mermaids vs LGBA

Article in Spiked:

"Trans ideology is unravelling before our eyes

Mermaids’ mad ideas about gender cannot withstand even the slightest scrutiny."

As ever a strong piece from Jo Bartosch with a succinct reminder of what the case is about and highlights of some of the more striking absurdities offered in evidence.

"Mermaids (acting with the support of Jolyon Maugham KC’s Good Law Project) brought the case in an attempt to strip the LGB Alliance, a charity which campaigns for the rights of same-sex attracted people, of its charitable status. Yet for much of the past week, it has felt as if trans ideology itself has been on trial." ...

"Despite these developments [ Cass, medics, Tavistock] according to Mermaids a child’s gender identity should still be ‘affirmed’ if he or she claims to be non-binary or the opposite sex. Mermaids also continues to lobby for trans-identified people to be able to change their legal gender through self-declaration alone.

These ideas about gender have not fared well under questioning in the courtroom." ...

The stand out quote from that is "I'm not sure people come out of the womb with a sex". WTAF? How do these people get out of bed? Cut their food up?

RedRec · 16/09/2022 20:26

Why does this crap keep ending up in 'Active'?
Zzzzzzzzzzz

Norma27 · 16/09/2022 20:34

@RedRec it turns up in active because it is an important topic. You may want women to shut up but we will not stop claiming our rights, and our words. If that upsets you then TOUGH.

Because posters keep posting about it. Including you - so thanks! Grin

Exactly!

Another good article that highlights just how vapid and foolish those arguing against science, facts and safeguarding look when challenged to explain their beliefs.

Wow, I'm so sorry you clicked on it in error, because you could obviously never have known what it was about from the title!

frauzen · 16/09/2022 21:54

Bumpity bump so maybe this stays in active... because this subject really matters and it's really important women understand what's happening.

Olderbadger1 · 16/09/2022 22:05

I get the impression that Jo is getting more and more pissed off with the lunacy of the gender crew. Along with the rest of us no doubt.

AnneLovesGilbert · 16/09/2022 22:06

Jo is an awesome human being and a wonderful writer and it’s great she’s appearing in so many more places.

Noluthando · 16/09/2022 22:07

Bump bump bump

Great article thanks for posting it @Abitofalark

RoyalCorgi · 17/09/2022 09:45

Excellent piece from Jo, but I don't know if she's right that it's unravelling. Obviously this court case has shown how idiotic and incoherent trans ideology is. The piece in Times Higher Education this week demonstrated exactly the same thing.

And yet it never ends, does it? Academics keep claiming to believe in it, organisations keep handing over their money to Mermaids for training, and those of us who are dissenters get nothing but abuse, death threats and attempts to remove us from our jobs.

Exactly this @RoyalCorgi - at Maya's case I thought surely this will change things, surely it will change policies and approaches in organisations. But it didn't. And then Allison's case where I thought the sheer bay shittery would shock everyone - but my organisation simply doubled down on the insanity.

And now watching Kate Harris and her incredible speech just minutes after being reduced to tears by being asked to agree that a biological man can be a lesbian - I just don't see how this ideology can continue. But it will, because it benefits men.

The THE article on the situation in academia (another thread in this topic) is astonishing - it pulls no punches that women are being silenced. That academic in the field of gender can't (or won't) even define the words that we are being berated for not agreeing with. That they accept physical and verbal threats to women as justified. And universities across the UK and the world are ok with this.

And I'm fucked off that time and money is having to be spent to get people to comply with the legal realities. I want to spend my time and money on other charities but right now I'm spending it to uphold the law. Not to change it, or to discriminate but just for actual law, not stonewall law, to be upheld.

And that's a rant but now I feel much better. And thank you Jo if you see this thread for your article

Whatsnewpussyhat · 17/09/2022 10:46

Just thought I'd bump this back into active.

Great article.

SeagullSausage · 18/09/2022 08:19

And yet, "the other side" are churning out an posts saying they're winning etc.

So hard to understand when they will engage with the arguments.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/09/2022 08:25

They will do that because their whole position depends on maintaining illusions. That's why whenever there is a significant set back for them they always spin it so actually everyone else has got it wrong and they "won".

RetreatRetreatRetreat · 18/09/2022 08:35

Great article. I wonder when the judgement is due?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 18/09/2022 08:57

For the LGBA? They had to adjourn the summing up part to November, so I imagine it will be early next year.

I keep saying the same thing, but you've articulated it much better than I would.

I just keep saying to my husband 'yes, but, Maya...Allison Bailey, the Cass report'.

Great article. I wonder when the judgement is due?

Summing up is on 7th and 8th of November. The actual judgement will be a while after that - IIRC, the submissions ran to over 2,000 pages although the judge(s) won't necessarily have to read all of them, just the stuff that they were directed to in court (plus the witness statements and other key documents).

TomPinch · 19/09/2022 09:23

The case is (as I understand it) about whether the LGB Alliance should have charitable status. Charitable status traditionally requires a public good but as that meant something that the law/ society already recognised as good, advocacy groups weren't considered charitable. The distinction has become quite blurred, however.

So if the LGB Alliance can successfully argue that their role is to support LGB people, they'll win. But if it becomes a big fight about trans rights they'll look like an advocacy group and lose. So, ironically, the less this case is about trans rights the better.
