Hmm the trans stuff somewhat denting the incredible science credentials there!

And women’s sports. Ffs!

PortiasBiscuit · 29/01/2023 08:37

I’ll send her there if she gets an offer.

FannyCann · 29/01/2023 08:40

Here is an FOI about Loughborough doing research for Mermaids.

FannyCann · 29/01/2023 08:46

And here is the FOI re Loughborough university dealings with Stonewall.

They were Stonewall champions then and stated they planned to continue so no surprise that they are still closely involved.

Shocking about the mermaids link. Are they completely unaware of the mood music?

User76765 · 29/01/2023 08:54

I liked Loughborough. What a shame.

RubiesandRose · 29/01/2023 09:04

I don't think anyone "sends" their kids to Uni? Surely it's a student choice but it should be an informed choice.

My daughter graduated from Loughborough last year, I'll be honest and say I wasn't aware of their strong links with Stonewall and do find it disturbing.

However DD is an outspoken feminist and I remember her attending an event debating trans women in women's sport several years ago and her reporting back there were a lot of gender critical views raised by female athletes and I really hope these voices are still being heard. The tide needs to be continued to be turned and more female athletes to join women like the very brave Sharron Davies in speaking out.

Diynoidea · 29/01/2023 09:07

echoing @RubiesandRose those going to university are adults and it’s their decision where they go. You don’t send your child to university.

Needmoresleep · 29/01/2023 09:10

I assume that Loughborough’s Stonewall accreditation helps bring in money for trans sport research from people who are looking for justification for trans inclusion in women’s sport. If so it is a slippery slope.

From what I hear, world top ten departments, and Loughborough’s sports science will be up there, are a bit like football teams. Attract key players, which in turn attracts research money, and then the published results help push you further up the rankings. Loughborough is an interesting example because a lot of its reputation comes from sport, including from students who want to maintain high level sports participation balanced with good academics.

The key to good research is academic freedom. It will only take a few half cock bits of research for others in the field to notice. When a job comes up they don’t apply. They are already very aware of the politics within the field. Why would you give yourself more grief by switching to a Stonewall backed, Mermaids linked University. Any bias in a department is then amplified as the recruitment pool will be made up of people who feel they will fit in.

Instead Loughborough should be neutral and seen to be neutral. Then carry out the research which is seem as academically rigorous which can then be cited by those who want to ensure that sport for women and girls is fair. Funding should be available. In the end there are plenty of people who understand that sport for 50% of the population needs to be fair to ensure good participation and support. Very few will pay to watch transwomen win women’s medals. And who would pay a Stonewall champion to carry out unbiased research. The bias is there in plain sight.

Dc is gay and has actively looked for places which don’t shout about stonewall links. He’s realistic enough to know that most unis still are members but he’s looked at which seem to be completely captured by the trans activists and avoided those. It’s a big deal for a lot of gay kids who have been brave enough to speak up.

Needmoresleep · 29/01/2023 09:50

But you can counsel them. I met a Jewish community leader a couple of weeks ago and talked about DDs observations of anti-semitism on campus. (Mainly wrapped up in a Corbyn pro Palestine line but unpleasant nonetheless.) He agreed. Jewish kids are well aware and do factor things like this into their decision making.

A university that supports academic freedom is more attractive to both staff and students. Too many people have to be careful what they say, either at work, on social media, or even with friends and family.

HagoftheNorth · 29/01/2023 10:16

Loughborogh has poured incredible resources into trying to prove trans women compete equally in women’s sport. They have yet to publish any credible papers on the subject (but they keep trying!) Not surprised (but disappointed) by the continuing links with Stonewall, but flabbergasted that they still support Mermaids given their activities work against child safeguarding

kimlek · 29/01/2023 10:39

Good for him! It’s quite tricky to work out what’s what. York has a pride zebra crossing, has named a college after (probably) one of the first known British lesbians (Anne lister) - all good stuff. Nothing wrong with diversity and inclusion but without crushing women’s rights. But when I look closely there’s links to stonewall and mermaids on the LBGTQ+ pages. There’s a femsoc that stresses it’s trans inclusionary so I do wonder how much debate occurs - again nothing wrong with inclusion providing debate allowed. Whereas Loughborough’s fem doc seems to be all about debate. He’s done well to drill down. DD (and I) are a bit late realising all this.

kimlek · 29/01/2023 10:42

That post was meant for @Ciri I’m just wondering if he’s discounted Bath, Loughborough or York? I’m still digging!

Needmoresleep · 29/01/2023 11:26

Ciri, he might try looking at the various University's pride/LGBTQ+ socs twitter and other social media. This I assume is where students could find difficulty, unless studying some social sciences where they might look at the courses and who is teaching them. (Prof Sally Hinds is sociology Sheffield but also Director EDI. Medical Ethics/Law at Bristol has promoted some pretty woke stuff with links to WPATH etc.) Most students are able to ignore most of it. DD is at a woke University but most students never go any where near the SU - a pity but why would you. DS was at LSE and active in several societies even leading some student sponsored research and teaching without, I suspect, ever coming across gender ideology.

Bunpea · 29/01/2023 11:46

That sounds dreadful and a complete betrayal by the University of their female cohort. I guess the key point is whether it is objective and non-biased.

Looking at Joanne Harper’s info on Researchgate, I note that TRA terminology is already in use (“cisgender”) - creepy.

Bunpea · 29/01/2023 11:58

Re Mermaids: am also flabbergasted the University still has a link with Mermaids. How stupid must they be?

Deffo cross this university off the list for applications….pity….
but with that and Stonewall, you’d only go there now if you couldn’t get in anywhere else.

UCL has always seemed pretty good.
Sports Science : Bath and Exeter - unless Stonewall are all over them as well.

Waitwhat23 · 29/01/2023 12:20

This Loughborough University?

twitter.com/PayGapApp/status/1619649595692273666?s=20&t=4s-b9IdEusb4PIvTJTo-Nw

'In this organisation, women's median hourly pay is 31.3% lower than men's.' (My bolds)

Bunpea · 29/01/2023 12:34

Well said @Needmoresleep .

The research needs doing and it needs to be seen as rigourous.

Stonewall anywhere near it means bias.

Disagree re Pride zebra crossing: visually impaired people find them much harder to see than the black and white stripes.

York has prioritised virtue signalling towards alphabet people above making the environment easier to navigate for people with disabilities.

kimlek · 29/01/2023 14:43

Ah I wouldn’t have known that and they obviously didn’t discuss it widely.

NC523 · 02/02/2023 09:58

So, I emailed Loughborough to explain that their links to Stinewall mean that, for a significant number of students, this means that Loughborough Uni aren’t offering the service (education) they purport to. This is the note they sent back:

‘Dear enquirer

Thank you for your recent enquiry.

Your email has been forwarded to colleagues within the University.

Kind regards

Suzanne
