Hi everyone, I am involved in the Nordic Model Now! campaign group and I want to tell you about our ‘Students for sale’ conference on Saturday 15 October in central London.

I know many of you have expressed concern about the “sex work is real work” ideology that dominates in UK universities and how schoolchildren are being taught that prostitution can be “rewarding” in sex education classes. These ideas are also dominant in many political parties and trade unions.

Many young women tell us that they found out the hard way that the reality doesn’t match this rhetoric. For example, Emily, one of our members, who turned to “sex work” when she was in dire financial straits at university a few years ago, says:

“I was sold a complete lie. It’s not easy money. To the buyer, you are nothing more than an object for their consumption, not an actual human being with emotions. You are expected to just put up with whatever they want to do and say to you.

“The exchange of money makes them feel entitled to treat you however they like, with no regard for your feelings or consent. Not only that, but the buyers know very well how to push the price down as low as possible – they know that you’re vulnerable and that you need the cash and they have no problem using that to their advantage.”

She now believes that young people should be given better information and warned about the dangers. That’s why we are doing all we can to bring about change.

The conference will hear from women who have lived experience of the sex trade – about its reality once all the euphemisms and propaganda have been stripped away – and from women and men from a variety of fields who are working to bring about change.

We are thrilled that Chelsea Geddes is coming all the way from New Zealand to tell us about her experience of prostitution under New Zealand’s fully decriminalised system and Cajsa is coming from Sweden to tell us about her experience of prostitution under Sweden’s Nordic Model system.

It really is shaping up to be an unmissable event. We’re hoping it will stimulate a national conversation about the reality and harms of the sex trade. Do please come along - and consider bringing your older teenagers and young adults.

Tickets are only £5 (concessions £3).

Thank you for letting us know about this. It's a scandal that 'sex work is work' has managed to establish itself and that students are being encouraged to participate by the organisations who are profiting from them.

Will we be able to watch any of the event online? I can't attend, unfortunately.

CompleteGinasaur · 06/09/2022 10:15

I would highly recommend this. I went to the event in Nottingham a couple of months ago and was blown away by how moved and energised I was by it; the difference between having an intellectual understanding of the evils of prostitution and actually hearing real women right in front of you tell you about the destruction and degradation inflicted on them in the name of 'sex work is work' was humbling and inspirational. When I think about the courage it must take for these women to relive their own personal hells to raise awareness for the lucky rest of us I want to cry all over again. Go, you won't regret it - our feminism needs reminders like these that 'The personal is political', it builds a kind of solidarity you can't get from behind a keyboard.

Thank you for posting this, it looks very worth attending

@CompleteGinasaur Thank you for your wonderful feedback on our Nottingham event. It's brilliant to know that it moved you in this way. We have heard something similar from several other women - so you are not alone in your assessment.

So dear Mumsnetters, especially those who live in or near London, do please come if you can. I apologise we are not running a creche - and realise that this is likely to mean that some of you won't be able to make it.

@pattihews We are definitely planning to record it - so there will be a chance to watch it afterwards.

That's good news. I'm really busy at the moment, no free weekends till October, otherwise I'd come along.

annadjinn · 06/09/2022 15:00

Oh, it is in October! Saturday 15 October!

I think I saw 15th and just thought no — bit weekend away for me, no chance of cancelling. October I'm going to LGB Alliance and London and then onto Cardiff for Filia. Will have to see whether I can afford the two trips to London.

This is such a bizarre thing to say given all the shit going on, but it feels like a good time to be an active feminist. Never known so many opportunities to get together with like-minded women.

CompleteGinasaur · 06/09/2022 17:11

@annadjinn You're more than welcome, I feel I should be thanking you for all the work you collectively do on this pivotal issue. I can't make the conference this year (can't just pop down from where I'll be on the Isle of Lewis!), but I'll be looking forward to next year..

Thanks again, and solidarity. x

Boiledbeetle · 06/09/2022 17:46

I'm just remembering being a uni student back in the 90s. The nearest I came to prostitution was working at an all night garage selling the women their condoms whilst the punters parked up round the corner.

Those women were out night after night rain or shine selling their bodies for a pittance. I got to know some of quite well and their lives were absolute shit.

Why in this day and age it's seen as progressive to send women down this path is beyond me.

It's not rewarding or any other nice thing. It's degrading and dangerous and ruins not just the bodies but the minds of these women.

God this world gets more fucked up by the day.

@annadjinn keep up the good work.

annadjinn · 06/09/2022 18:21

@Boiledbeetle Exactly! And thank you.

@CompleteGinasaur Thank you! And wish you a great time in Lewis.
