Cycling UK balls up its commenting policy

Well I just took one for the team, sort of. Last month I girded my (male) loins and namechecked FWR on a cycling forum, annoyed by some of the posts and apparently unable to keep my mouth shut. That's an archive link because my post, the last one on that page, was belatedly disappeared by a moderator today. Here's a link to the live thread.

I was told my post was anti-trans bigotry, and that "the folks on mumsnet absolutely ascribe the absolute worst kind of anti-trans bigotry & attack people with name-calling & bullying tactics until they either give in or leave…"

The Mumsnet link was to this post by @OhSister, which I think does such a great job explaining things I've now used it on a number of occasions.

Thanks a lot for getting me in trouble! /s

Correction: my post wasn't bigotry, just the link. But the entire post had to go, so tainted was it.

Thanks for trying!

Have you ever been introduced to The Bewilderness’ Rules of Misogyny?

Because it seems that your cycling forum is judging FWR by rules no. 2 and 3:

1st rule of misogyny: Women are responsible for what men do.

2nd rule of misogyny: Women saying no to men is a hate crime.

3rd rule of misogyny: Women speaking for themselves are exclusionary and selfish.

4th rule of misogyny: Women's opinions are violence against men thus male violence against women is justified.

5th rule of misogyny: WATM! [What about the Men] Women and Feminism must be useful to men or they are worthless.

6th rule of misogyny: Women who go around being female AT men by menstruating and breast feeding babies deserve punishment.

7th rule of misogyny: Women should always be grateful to men for everything.

8th rule of misogyny: Men are whatever men say they are and women are whatever men say they are.

9th rule of misogyny: Men always know the "real reasons" for everything women do and say.

10th rule of misogyny: The worst thing about male violence is that it males men look bad.

11th rule of misogyny: Basic pattern recognition skills are cruel and evil when they hurt men's feelings.

12th rule of misogyny: whatever women suffer from, men suffer from more.

Misogynists will misogynist.....

Nice try though.

I’m a member of cycling uk, but I’ve never used the forums. I might just pop over to join the chat.

No they don't. That's a dishonest statement.

Name call or bully and MNHQ will delete, and you will be sanctioned.

TRAs just can't handle the truth.

Iadorerain · 30/08/2022 17:45

Well done, keep plugging away

FarEastSussexCyclist · 30/08/2022 22:27

@TheClogLady I note some bonus rules here.

What is it with the use of the term "folks" by TRAs? Apart from the fact that using an "s" for plural is an Americanism for this particular word (bearing in mind that we're talking about "Cycling UK" here), I know the sum total of zero people who use "folk" in real life to refer to a group of people. So why is its use so common amongst TRAs?

PastaForLife · 31/08/2022 19:54

There’s a Cycling UK womens cycling group where you have to “identify as a woman to join”. Probably something to do with one of their trustees identifying as a woman.

My short answer is in-group-signalling - that's the primary thing happening, same as a lot of other linguistic or artistic quirks you see them using.

Longer essay on "folks" specifically from New Discourses' Social Justice Encyclopedia:

I very much enjoyed the last line on your deleted post FarEast.

Good effort. It is hard to argue with this shit in the wilds of other forums. But it needs to be argued, especially on sports type forums I think.

FarEastSussexCyclist · 31/08/2022 23:15

I try. This is the third cycling forum where I've struck out. Cycling seems particularly captured, and indeed, I have the former Rachel McKinnon to thank for piquing my interest on this subject.

btw I will admit to being American, though moved to the UK long before it became terf island and use a mix of Americanisms and Britishisms. I grew up with "folks" (interesting link @NecessaryScene), but am careful not to torture my fellow British citizens too much with it.
