Discrimination example in training at work. Advice on how to approach.

Just did our online discrimination training.

One of the examples of discrimination given was a manager overhearing two women expressing their discomfort at a transwoman using the female toilets. The advice was to report it to HR.

I would like to anonymously point out to them that GC beliefs are protected in law, and ask how they as an employer would ensure that they don't discriminate against GC beliefs in such a scenario.

I've seen some good advice on here and was hoping for some help in formulating a response to them?

Possibly worth contacting Sex Matters?

Do you have examples of this/a record of this training? And know who the provider was?

Briefly, I'd advise screenshotting or keeping copies if you can.

You should go with a question of has your employer decided to opt for the single sex exemption for toilets and changing rooms.
If they have the example is against company policy.
If they have not why is it that the "mens" toilets dont have sanitary bins.
If the toilets are marked women & men is that female&male or are they both mixed sex with extra urinal provision for males.
If there are no individual single occupancy toilets is that discrimination on faith grounds what provision is there for woman and men whos faith requires single sex provision.

That training seems a bit 'big brother'. Was it aimed at the manager, eavesdropping on a private conversation or at women, yes even your thoughts are policed and will have consequences.

FemaleAndLearning · 26/08/2022 11:47

That is creepy I'm not sure that is what bystander intervention is, grassing up on people's private conversations.. Are you able to say who the online training provider is?

Solas has a fab response, I would use that.

It's always about prioritising men isn't it.

Gender ideology is regressive nonsense and no one should be being compelled to go along with it by being threatened with sanctions at work.

Telling women that they will be reported to HR for discussing their single sex facilities being used by someone of the opposite sex is ridiculous.

There are Health and Safety Regs that require sex segregated toilets in the workplace. I would point that out and say they shouldn't be allowing a trans identifying male to use the women's toilets as this is a breach of the relevant legislation.
www.hse.gov.uk/contact/faqs/toilets.htm
Where it is not possible to provide separate facilities there is the option to provide individual self contained cubicles with toilet, sink etc behind a locked door with floor to ceiling enclosure.

Turn the sexes around.

The manager overheard 2 men discussing how they are objecting to a female walking by them as they are at the urinal as a semi-naked male with his penis exposed.

How is HR going to decide is in the right there?

Abitofalark · 26/08/2022 14:27

Just say that that is discrimination against women because it is failing to provide for the needs of women for single-sex private facilities and is prioritising other needs above women's and that is sex discrimination.
