Barclays bank advert - did I imagine this?

Late on Tuesday evening, so I was quite tired and not concentrating very well, but did it show a trans wooman being encouraged to use savings for a 'breast augmentation' operation?
Would they have an advert encouraging a woman to have cosmetic surgery?

Very odd.

I don’t know, but you can see why all the banks are going wild for trans ideology, can’t you? Want a loan for those new breasts, Ma’am? Want to put those payments to Gender GP on a credit card? We are here for that.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 18/08/2022 08:09

I saw that. First time I've seen a bank suggesting taking out a loan for cosmetic surgery Confused

NonnyMouse1337 · 18/08/2022 08:16

It's all part of the Stonewall League Table of Trans Champions. They can write about their advert in their submission and be awarded lots of points and head pats for being good 'allies'. It's so lame, and yet incredibly effective in force feeding the general public all this pish.

hatethetwoweekwait · 18/08/2022 10:56

Barclays is one of the worst banks from a climate change perspective. Nobody should be using them. Funny how they're championing 'social justice' (if new boobs count as that) while actively destroying the world.

hatethetwoweekwait · 18/08/2022 10:58

Sorry, not one of the worst, THE worst: bank.green/banks/barclays

I don't know how anyone could call them themselves progressive and bank with them. Guess they have to distract from this with 'feel-good' ads.

Sorry if this is derailing the thread a bit. They're just awful in almost all ways.

Snowshower · 18/08/2022 12:41

Yes I saw this. I thought exactly the same, would they show a young woman saving up for surgery to make her body more 'feminine?'

Probably not, as they'd be criticised for that - that's why the trans thing is so perfect for them ... no-one can criticise them for using a transwoman to suggest that people take out expensive loans for cosmetic surgery as they will be accused of transphobia. But obviously it helps to normalise getting into huge amounts of debt for cosmetic surgery among non-trans people too, so it's a great opportunity for banks.

Plus, it ticks the right Stonewall boxes, as a PP mentioned.

Why was my post deleted? Is it because I used the words “castration” and “mastectomy”?

misscockerspaniel · 18/08/2022 13:06

I wonder if it breaches ASA rules

I've fallen foul of this. Apparently we are not allowed to express the view that removing healthy body parts is anything but positive.

But they’re medical terms to describe medical procedures. No different from “breast augmentation” or indeed “breast reduction”.

I’ll rephrase what I wrote: will this bank now show men asking to borrow money to have a crucial body part removed because they think doing so will make them into women? And will the same bank feature in their ads women requesting bank loans to have two crucial body parts removed because they believe this will make them into men?

Is this language sanitised enough?

Somanysocks · 18/08/2022 13:21

As long as the NHS isn't paying I don't care how transwomen/men spend their loans. Agree though Barclays is an awful bank.

I expect the mods saw 'castration' and panicked

Riverlee · 18/08/2022 13:37

That reminds me, I haven’t heard back from the Mcains Knockers advert yet. Off to email the ASA.

I don't think they like it when we talk about corporate businesses in here because it is off-putting to advertisers, 2 or 3 threads about the 'DIY chain' were deleted last week.

A cosmetic surgery company had an marketing email investigated by the ASA because it exaggerated the benefits that could be derived from cosmetic surgery. From the ASA assessment:

We considered that the claims “FEELING BETTER IN YOURSELF As you start to see your dream profile become a reality, you’ll find that you start to feel more comfortable in yourself” and “IMPROVED WELLBEING When you change something that has been affecting your confidence, mobility or health, you might find that your mental and physical wellbeing also improve” implied that by changing their physical appearance, an individual could resolve their physical and mental health concerns.

This company was also investigated over a TV ad that targeted new mothers by urging them to have breast surgery to 'regain' their pre-pregnancy body.

I don't know what to think anymore.

Woah. That's good to know. Or - bad to know.

Dreikanter · 19/08/2022 22:40

Apparently it’s a “partnership” between Barclays and Channel 4.

www.barclays.co.uk/make-money-work-for-you/money-on-my-mind/

Luna, aged 30 from Brighton, is on a journey of personal transformation. She wants to appear more outwardly feminine, so she’s working towards her goal of gender affirming surgery. Luna’s already a great saver, but her hoarding mind-set means she prefers to keep all her money in one place – rather than making it work for her. That means it’s taking longer to meet her goal than she’d like.

Isn't it about saving and investing for the surgery rather than getting into debt with a loan? If people are going to have surgery anyway I'd have thought that was a better idea?

There aren't enough eye rolls in the world for that description Dreikanter

Signalbox · 19/08/2022 23:35

It blows my mind how many trans activists claim to be anti-capitalist. I can't imagine it would be possible for transgenderism in its current Western incarnation to exist outside of capitalism.

TopKnotch · 19/08/2022 23:50

I can't watch it but I've read the transcript. Do they really have the line, "my name is Luna and I want big tits" in a Barclays advert? Am advert for a high street bank is happy to use that?

I moved all my accounts from Barclays despite having banked with them since childhood because I hated their "be an ally" video so much. I refused to consider a mortgage offer from them and told the broker exactly why I was happy to leave their products out of our shortlist.

Seems they're keen to keep digging that hole.
