Feminist speakers attacked and heckled in US - #LetJulieSwim

'Julie Jaman, 80 year old woman banned from the YMCA for life for telling a man to leave the woman's locker room.'

A meeting for feminists to support Julie was attacked by loud, violent counter-protestors. Brave women in the US are starting to speak up, with predictable results.

We're with you all.

Full livestream:

Clip from Julie trying to speak - the flag behind her is ripped down and she is shouted over.

Horrible , not brave or stunning. Well done all those women, and thank you Julie for standing up for women and girls. We have to do this- there is no option.

Heckling an 80 year old woman!

Just one more peak in my never ending mountain range.

At what point are the thugs TRAs going to realise what they look like?

I'm on holiday with my mum and had already peaked her but am drip feeding her extra info to show the extent of the madness and the vile behaviour of TRAs.

I showed her the clip which I'd bookmarked on Twitter. Every time she thinks she's seen the worst, there's something else that can still shock her.

I wish there was a way of getting people not already involved in the Women's rights/trans problem to see and hear about stuff like this. So often we're sharing information between each other. Good to keep on top of developments but it sometimes feels like preaching to the converted.

To be honest, we need to reach legislators more than we need to convince people who aren't interested.

That was a lot of male sounding heckling.

She looked extremely intimidated and no wonder.

She is no different from most other women of her generation. And most of us younger.

Even many of the most vocal female TRAs will wake up no doubt as they get older and have kids, or be put in an uncomfortable positing with a Trans Woman.

WalrusSubmarine · 16/08/2022 20:05

Is it a counter protest or are they just intimidating and shutting down the first protest.

GrinitchSpinach · 16/08/2022 20:14

Thank you so much for bringing attention to this, PrimAndProper. The more people learn about these incidents, the more they object.

May I just quibble, in a sisterly fashion, with this bit?

Brave women in the US are starting to speak up, with predictable results.

Women in the US have been speaking up for years, but our media is so completely captured that it doesn't tend to ripple very far. It is extremely frustrating.

I'm sure there are earlier examples, but this one stood out a few years ago:

March and harassment against WoLF's "Fighting the New Misogyny" event at a Seattle public library, February 2020:

Harassment, bullying, attempts to drown out women speakers in Philadelphia, August 2022:

GrinitchSpinach · 16/08/2022 20:36

Also, I would like to mention that the women who spoke at these (and many other) US events are completely aware that the woman-hating activists in our country have easy access to firearms, and that when we lose our jobs here we lose health care not just for ourselves but for all of our dependents. The stakes are extremely high, and some American women have been speaking out for years anyway.

PrimAndProperPearlClutcher · 16/08/2022 20:40

Grinitch, sorry, you're quite right. I'm hoping that the issues are starting to get more sunlight in the US now, which is not at all to forget the hard work and bravery of so many women in the US and Canada.

More power to all of you.

Cheers, Prim! UK women have been and continue to be phenomenal in this struggle. I think most American activists feel a deep sense of solidarity with UK sisters, and with women across the globe.

I do have hope that rays of sunlight are beginning to break through the clouds in the US now. Looking forward to those upcoming Dr. Phil episodes, whenever they air...

PrimAndProperPearlClutcher · 16/08/2022 21:03

Me too!

As for guns, healthcare, and some of the other things US women have been facing ... solidarity.

I can't find the actual quote from the CEO involved about Julie not fitting with the purposes of the YMCA, but I thought that the C stood for Christian, and I'm not convinced that the original founder would go along with treating an 80 year old woman as Julie has been treated. (I know there are problems with the expression of Christianity in parts of the States, but even so...)
