Dundee man leads fight against period poverty

“It’s about making people aware of the availability of period products for anyone of any gender, whenever they need it.

... '“I was chosen as the best person for the job and for me, it’s irrespective of gender.

“Having a guy can’t be a bad thing – it grabs the headlines, but that’s not the reason I was put into post!” Jason continues.

“For me it’s about driving the discussion from a young age so boys and girls are included and there’s no hiding it away because that keeps it as a taboo topic.

“I want to be seen as a positive male role model.”'

Why?

He isn't doing those things himself directly.

The paragraph you've quoted clearly states he's providing support to the project team.

I just don't understand why having a man taking an administrative and PM role to support these activities is problematic.

Exactly.

littlbrowndog · 16/08/2022 23:06

and this pisses me right off on the job advert.

The job advert said the suitable candidate needed a "successful track record of engaging and empowering a large range of people from a diverse range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, in particular young people who menstruate".

my country doesn’t even know that only women and girls have periods. They do though. But they are liars we know. They know and we all know they do.

Redburnett · 16/08/2022 23:23

Spiders is right. I can only assume the guy is a salesman and talked the talk in the interview. Totally and utterly bananas to appoint a man to such a position.

FemaleAndLearning · 16/08/2022 23:29

I can't see from that advert, with the short application date, how he would be eligible let alone the best candidate given his background.
Also I thought Scotland was not in a good financial state? With each local area (there are 32 local areas in Scotland) paying for a period dignity lead for at least 2 years that is over £2 million pounds. Then there is supporting staff for at least two years, graphic design etc. that is a lot of money and could buy a lot of period products.
Surely targeted social media and posters delivered to schools councils etc. to say where you can get the free products would be enough and would be much better value for the tax payers.

Also I'm pretty sure the Project Lead role would be outward facing and is what the job advert says. This is not someone project managing an account system in the background of an organisation this is a project management role where you are the public face.

I find it all very patronising and once again an issue that affects women and girls does not centre women and girls.

NyanBinaryJohn · 16/08/2022 23:30

From an earlier statement by Grant:

Although affecting women directly, periods are an issue for everyone.

Affecting men because what? Women typically aren't 'available' for sex when they are on?

It's another showboat policy. Our school ended up sending the free sanpro overseas as we had so much, it wasn't ever used. It's just like the baby boxes.

Meanwhile, yes, there are many things we could be focussing energies on - health, transport, infrastructure.

But they're just not as progressive.

WandaWomblesaurus · 17/08/2022 04:15

Someone on another thread have found a link between him and someone called Katie Baxter

"So I did some digging on FB / LinkedIn / Google etc and it turns out he's been "the best person for the role" for the last three completely different roles Katie Baxter of the Period Dignity Working Group has been involved in hiring for."

Who is Katie Baxter and why does she keep hiring her mate?

JacquelineCarlyle · 17/08/2022 06:31

picklemewalnuts · 16/08/2022 08:31

@SpidersAreShitheads after more thought, I'm pissed off that a job women have done unpaid for generations has now been made, paid, and given to a bloke.

Every woman would have a qualification for this job that he doesn't have. And as a pp says, it suggests that there are no women in Scotland who have the requisite skill set. What a sexist statement that is, in itself.

Totally agree with this!

JacquelineCarlyle · 17/08/2022 06:31

Clymene · 16/08/2022 08:39

It's the ultimate mansplain.

Just like any man who wants to be in women's single sex spaces is the type of man who shouldn't be in there, any man who wants to talk to young women about periods is not the kind of man who should be given the job.

Totally agree with this too!

picklemewalnuts · 17/08/2022 07:58

There are some well paid jobs that can be done equally well by man and by women. Men are often hired for these jobs, in preference to women. That's one of the issues feminism fights for.

There are some poorly paid jobs that can be done equally well by men or women. Women are often hired in preference to men.

Then there's this job, which would be better done by a woman.

IHateHeatWaves · 17/08/2022 08:07

I’m surprised they hired a man. However, we all know that no one listens to women. We are just told to shut up, or worse, threatened if we speak out.

I’m adamant that it’s only when men get pissed off, that other men listen. It’ll take men to stop the trans activists.

So, if this bloke can do something about period poverty, perhaps we should give him a chance.

Maireas · 17/08/2022 08:07

It's interesting if you flip it around - would it be acceptable to employ a white person in a role only impacting black people? Or a straight person in a job dealing with gay people's issues?
Why do women have to accept this?

VanillaImpulse · 17/08/2022 08:08

£37k salary as well apparently

FannyCann · 17/08/2022 08:20

And 45 days a/l a year for a 35 hour week.

I'm sure there would be a lot less burned out nurses if they had that sort of package.

Slothtoes · 17/08/2022 08:27

A man shouldn’t be in this role. He’ll just never understand. What woman would want to be working in a male-focused equivalent job in an equally stigmatised area? (There isn’t an equally stigmatised male experience but point stands- men need to keep out of delivering women’s services to women. I just don’t think women would be so presumptuous at work as to do this.

PrimAndProperPearlClutcher · 17/08/2022 09:14

'Monica Lennon, the Scottish Labour MSP who spearheaded a four-year campaign that has shifted the public discourse around menstruation, said it was important that women’s voices were not crowded out.

...

'“There’s a role for men taking on leadership roles and contributing to positive and respectful conversations whilst ensuring that the voices of women, girls and people who menstruate are never crowded out.”'

Surely Monica didn't mean to suggest we needed males to lead this campaign?

What a ridiculous job for a man.

Supersee · 17/08/2022 10:44

Holy Christ. LOJ on Jeremy Vine saying his initial reaction to this was why a man, it should be a WOMAN, and acknowledges that he, as a man, can't have periods.

Well well well.

BlueWhat · 17/08/2022 10:48

What I don't understand is, if this guy decided to wear a dress and call himself Jane. Not a word would be said in the media!

I mean you can run a Rape Centre which specifically asked for FEMALE applications but still managed to break the law and appoint a person with a penis.

Jaw. Dropped.

Thanks, OJ. That's the first time I've ever heard him say something in support of women.

Bless him, he probably needs those days to care for his kids in the school holidays and sort out admin and uniform etc. ahead of September, or look after an an ageing parent, or to rest when his meno symptoms get too much.
