More recognition of the requirements of safety and fairness in women’s sport.

Thank you, ErrolTheDragon - that is my reaction too:
(Though reading section 5, can't help wondering why they don't also think "shit, WTF do we allow head punches at all?)

Section 5, quoted verbatim:
"Combat sports such as boxing are unique since every punch thrown at the head is thrown with the intention of winning by causing a knockout (which is nothing but a concussive head injury). Resulting these sports carry an exceedingly high risk for both acute and chronic neurological injuries.
Boxers have died during a bout or in the immediate aftermath due to traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) such as an acute subdural hematoma (SDH), epidural hematoma (EDH), subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), intracranial hematoma and injury to the great vessels of the neck such as carotid or vertebral artery dissection.
The WBC advocates for two equally skilled and matched athletes competing in the cage or ring, on a level playing field and to keep matches fair, competitive, entertaining, and most importantly safe for all combatants.
At present level of scientific knowledge, the WBC consensus is that allowing transgender athletes to compete raises serious health and safety concerns.

No shit, Sherlock?

When I read this, I assumed it was written by a non-native speaker of English. That explains some of the phrasing but also highlights the importance of proofreading!!!

It's almost like they were waiting for the first sport to ban transwomen and they all jumped in. Individually they were too scared to do it but now it's like dominoes. Strength in numbers. Prisons and crime stats next. It'll be a long process but on a personal level, I am enjoying their erasure....😏

Better late than never.

(Though reading section 5, can't help wondering why they don't also think "shit, WTF do we allow head punches at all?"Confused)

Quite. It basically says the intention of the participants is to cause neurological injury! I think boxing class is a great workout although would never actually spar / be interested in doing real boxing, but reading that in black and white kind of turns me off the whole thing.

LizzieSiddal · 16/08/2022 07:10

So pleased to read this. The tide really is turning isn’t it!

I spent half of May in the neurosurgery ward with my son with a subdural haematoma. A boxer had been on ward for weeks. They are desperately short of beds.

The author is a neurologist who specialises in head injuries and concussions (amongst other specialties).

He is Chief Medical Officer of the New York State Athletic Commission, which licenses combat sports in the state - including MMA, so maybe there’ll be tighter regulation coming there too.

thank goodness. Let's hope MMA follows; I find that utterly terrifying.

Artichokeleaves · 16/08/2022 15:06

We're getting there. It's all tied up in a lot of anxious language, but the bottom line consistently being come back to:

Absolutely respect the right of a male person to identify as a TW and be treated as such.

TW and biological women are not one and the same. Sex remains a fact and is relevant in some situations.

Therefore there are times when TW cannot be treated as or grouped with biological women, and will have to have separate resources/facilities/arrangements.

That'll work.

Yes. And as far as I can see, the times when TW can't be grouped with women are exactly the same as the times that any male can't be grouped with women. There may perhaps be some of these cases when it's also not appropriate for the TW to be treated exactly the same as men - but that's nowt to do with women and not something we should be expected to sort out.

Fimofriend · 16/08/2022 17:22

It is nice that they have made that statement.
But let's face it: Anybody who actually cares about sport, any sport, will never be ok with blatant cheating so it really shouldn't be surprising that they made that statement. Cheaters ruin the game.

I sincerely hope so. I’m surprised the blatant unfairness was ever allowed to reach the level it has reached. And I hope the increasing number of sports insisting on fairness will put more pressure on those still toeing the trans line.

fifteenohfour · 16/08/2022 20:50

Love that sports are starting to take a stand against the gender cultists.

However I'm pretty sure points 3 & 4 are copy and pasted ? They are worded exactly the same as each other!?

Wellies54 · 16/08/2022 21:49

3 talks about transwomen, 4 talks about transmen. ( Obviously transmen are going to be very disappointed not to be able to compete against men any more).

Artichokeleaves · 17/08/2022 12:35

now it's like dominoes.

Quite. The fear (and it's important to be aware of fear of what and who carried out said punitive actions) to say what was believed and known to be right has played a huge, huge part in this.

And once it is established that male people cannot be counted as female in sports, then it's established that there are necessarily, limits and boundaries to TW's choices and freedoms of access to female spaces, resources and activities and that sex remains a dividing line necessary to the equality, access and inclusion of females and the meeting of their sex specific needs.

Regardless of how cross this makes male people, who would prefer to not have to respect them. Which illustrates in a nutshell why in part female humans continue to need such resources and spaces and why the gatekeeping is now going to have to be firmly beefed up to fit modern times. Because the basic good will of permitting and respecting their spaces/needs/inclusion/equality etc has been trampled out of the way by the political TQ+ lobby.

This will end (eventually) in legal protections for females. And good.

Fingers crossed very hard.
