As the thread title says, Graham Souness has not only asserted that football is “a man’s game” he’s doubled down on it.

Seems what he said has been taken out of context. He was talking about the ref letting the game flow.

Apart from in the States, apparently.

And?

midgetastic · 15/08/2022 15:27

I read more of what he said

He prefers the more violent nature/strength display of the man's game. Yes the world needs that so much

Whereas the women have to make do with pesky things like skill I am guessing

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 15/08/2022 15:29

I can't stand Souness and never thought I would defend him over anything but he just meant that the power is back in the hands of the players 'the men'. As he was talking about a male football match I don't see the issue with him saying 'It's a man game' rather than 'It's a players game'.

puffyisgood · 15/08/2022 15:32

not great. I get the sentiment but there are many other wordings he could have used, e.g. '(British) football is a physical game'.

midgetastic · 15/08/2022 15:38

to me he was equating power / strength display as being the right and proper way to play football

MrGHardy · 15/08/2022 16:11

He did not say "football is a man's game".

He said "we got our football back, men at it" in reference to refs letting the game flow.

Which isn't surprising coming from someone who was dirtier than Keane.

Horizons83 · 15/08/2022 16:12

It's clear (in my reading anyway) from the context he meant man's game rather than boy's game. I can't get worried about this, it's not a slur on women's football.

Shivermetimbers0112 · 15/08/2022 16:57

Completely over-blown nonsense. A comment made in the context of a change of approach by referees this season designed to allow the game to flow more by not giving free kicks for minor infringements, plus the fact that it was a men’s game he was commentating on.
