'letter to the surgeon who performed my doublt mastectomy' - a detransitioner

Heartbreaking.

'I want to inform you that I do not believe removing the breasts of young women, especially minors, is medically ethical given the severe rates of comorbid mental health issues in the FTM population. I do not believe I was stable or mature at 20 to transition and I don’t think a minor child under 18 in any circumstance is stable or mature to consent to having her breasts removed.'

That is so sad. I hope this young woman find the peace and acceptance she deserves.

This line stood out to me: 'my transgender identity was a maladaptive coping mechanism to deal with the reality of the trauma'. How and why are medical professionals blatantly ignoring something so obvious?

The surgeon she mentions operates on 16 year olds, who are presumably in distress - how can they possibly know whether this is what they really want?

We are failing these children.

"a cosmetic surgeon who has made his career entirely dedicated to performing double mastectomies on young women and girls as young as 16"

Imagine making the mutilation of young women your career. How despicable.

Crikey. A 16yo is not allowed to drink alcohol, smoke, vote or get a tattoo, but can have their healthy breasts removed whilst they're mentally distressed Sad

They say that a lot of surgeons are psychopaths. I don’t know whether it is true, or just speculation that took off because it sounds true. Surgeons like this make it seem very probable.

Until these surgeons are sued every which way they look, this isn't going to stop. Believe me, it's the only way to get America to wake up and listen. The trouble is, unlike the UK where you can point to one main provider, GIDS (and quite frankly, GIDS looks like a model of responsibility when compared with the US), there are so many different surgeons and clinics carrying out this practice that I imagine it would be quite difficult. It it will also take a heavy psychological toll on anyone who goes down that route, and I don't know how many detransitioners would be strong enough to cope mentally.

I came across that PITT (Parents with Inconvenient Truth about Trans) substack recently. The stories on it are absolutely heartbreaking. I could only read a couple of stories before I was overwhelmed.

Unfortunately, I would say many of these surgeons have their patients sign legal declarations absolving them of responsibility if the patient is unhappy with the results. Given this young woman was not underage, it may be hard to prove that she had no competency to consent.

Additionally, I have heard Helen Joyce talk about similar when she was researching her book, that after some scandals in the US regarding false memory syndrome (where people were falsely led to believe that they had been abused as a child by dodgy therapists) caused a lot of lawsuits, and eventually led to many insurance companies not covering this type of therapy, many psychologists have indemnity clauses and the time frame for legal liability is very small.

Despicable. There are people cashing on the body/ power/ sexual orientation issues forced on women and girls

I doubt they will be successfully sued by someone over the age of 18 bit beggars belief they can perform on kids
