BBC’s take on Drag Queen Story Hour

There have been a small number of protesters at similar events in the UK during the summer tour, which BBC Monitoring said has been linked to far-right groups or demonstrators who have switched from anti-lockdown and anti-vaccine protests to evidence-free claims that the events are being hosted by "paedophiles" and "child groomers"

What is this is font of wisdom called BBC Monitoring?

They're trying to smear gender critical women, this is the picture from their story about the DQSH protest in Cardiff yesterday.

Experts on disinformation, apparently.

blahblahblahspoons · 13/08/2022 08:34

I mean one of the protesters is wearing a mask. Anti-vaxxers tend also to be anti-maskers so their evidence free claim that it's this group doesn't even stack up against their own photo.

DoubleYouOhEmAyEn · 13/08/2022 08:45

I think the BBC are a lost cause. They have ignored abusers in their own ranks (Westwood, Saville before the moderators get upset) and publish biased and factually untrue stories like this which contribute to the shift of the Overton window regarding safeguarding, whilst also ignoring the massive erosion of women's safe spaces and dignity.
I used to be a massive bbc fan/advocate but now I think its got a rotten core and needs to be investigated thoroughly.

What frightening, fearsome protestors! Definitely absolute fascist Nazi right-wing scum there.

Hmm
blahblahblahspoons · 13/08/2022 08:57

Yes, I agree Double - the BBC are an anti-safeguarding lost cause. I haven't paid my TV licence for ages and have recently been trying to persuade my 70+ parents to switch to subscription only services too.

They've done absolutely nothing as far as I can tell to ensure another Savile won't happen. They have an anti-woman and anti-mother sexist agenda. Don't they have a notoriously bad sex pay gap too?

KittenKong · 13/08/2022 08:57

The BBC Website always seems to have some drag show or performed on the home page - the kids section used to have this lots.

they don’t see any issues at all. No sireee.

Here's the link to the bbc monitoring report

XiXimXerJinping · 13/08/2022 09:07

The tones the BBC use to describe the protesters is similar to what they would use for mass shootings or terrorist events.

It's bizarre when they then show photos of mums /grandmothers peacefully holding up placards.

oviraptor21 · 13/08/2022 09:07

Came here to find this story as was equally appalled at the description. Does anyone know who the protestors were? Is it worth putting in a complaint?

blahblahblahspoons · 13/08/2022 09:08

I should have added an anti-child agenda also.

The entire senior BBC management responsible for children's programming need to read the Cass review and also Gavin De Becker's 'protecting the gift' about keeping children safe.

Their enthusiastic and uncritical acceptance of TRA ideology will have overriden the fears and instincts of many parents I'm sure. The same happened with Savile - 'if the BBC say it's ok it must be ok' sort of thing.

sothisislove · 13/08/2022 09:20

There were many, many mums and grandmothers on Mumsnet who were anti-lockdown and anti-vaccine last year.

It wasn't just men who went down the conspiracy rabbit hole.

blahblahblahspoons · 13/08/2022 09:20

The sooner the BBC dies the better in my opinion and it's only a matter of time now.

I used to be one of their staunchest supporters, then I became a mum, learned about safeguarding and they actively undermine the safety of children. Rotten to the core is right.

This article is propaganda, there is no evidence base at all for claiming this is a group of anti-vaxxers. None whatsoever, I've just trawled through the linked articles. They've just made this bit up. It's complete lies.

The picture of ADHD (or whatever the drag queen's name is - how offensive) is so grotesque and such a parody of the actual female Mums attending, who unsurprisingly look nothing like this woman face. The photos tell a totally different story to the words. "The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command." (Thank you Orwell)

The real story here is why are libraries paying for drag queen story time and not for other protected characteristics? Where is lesbian story time or female fire fighter story time? Or person using a wheelchair story time? Blind story time (that one would be great, showing how you can access stories even when you can't see)?

Of course these mothers are attending, they're being gaslit and I don't doubt this is one of very few free events. I was shocked and how few free things there were with DD2 after DD1 (8 year age gap). Mums have so little support now compared to how it used to be, they'll accept anything that's free. Doesn't mean it's ok they're paying for men in woman face and literally nothing else.

blahblahblahspoons · 13/08/2022 09:29

There is no evidence provided - none - that the protesters are anti-vaxxers or anti-lockdown. My assumption is the "journalist" has made this up.

But even if some of the protesters WERE anti-lockdown that wouldn't necessarily mean they were wrong on this. And it would be surprising if the group all had the same opinions about other issues also (apart from the one they've come together to protest about).

The BBC is trying to paint people into two groups - good and bad and they get to define who is who. It's pretty anti democracy and free speech.

I suspect at this point most people in the country would be anti-lockdown but mainly becuase they were pro-vaccine and covid has consequently become a much less serious disease (still serious, but less serious for the vaccinated majority). It's not some homogenous group of nutters.

I'm pretty sure KJK said something anti-lockdown / anti restrictions at one point. Disagreed with her on that at the time, but she's absolutely right about the terrible harms being done to children through puberty blockers and uncritical affirmation and I agree with her on that.

blahblahblahspoons · 13/08/2022 09:34

When it comes to safeguarding, we can't accept the 'these people are always good, these people are always bad' approach. This approach is the opposite of safeguarding and creates scandals like Savile.

People cannot be above scrutiny.

Actual drag queens have come out and said it's a sexualised form of entertainment and not suitable for children. Are they anti-vaxx and therefore to be ignored too?!

What about gay Dad story time? If you want a positive gay male role model, that seems like it might be great?

BlooDeBloop · 13/08/2022 09:38

Came here also after reading the article this morning. Creepy BBC Monitoring. Weird insistence on bringing a bunch of 'groups' together under one umbrella. It's almost a paranoid world conspiracy thing going on reminiscent of the Red Scare. Anything in the news that doesn't conform to the Beeb's notion of right-think is undeniably due to an underground network consisting of murky altRight teens, skin heads and hippy 5G nutjobs slinking around the dark web. Hilarious when the real demographic protesting is so obviously not that. But then - are UK mums and feminists being brainwashed by the forces of darkness and just too stupid to understand...

drifttothecenter · 13/08/2022 09:50

I just saw yesterday there was a JK Rowling themed 'drag artise' performing at the Edinburgh Fringe this year 🤮

Floisme · 13/08/2022 10:29

Here's an idea BBC reporters, why not talk to the protestors yourselves and ask them who they are and why they're there?
You seem to have spoken to Sab / Aida and to parents who supported the event so why didn't you seek out an opposing perspective too? Isn't that your job?

KittenKong · 13/08/2022 10:35

Ask then what their propose learning outcomes are. Have they ‘lesson plans’? Are they trained in child development and/or education?

Or do they just want to sprinkle sunshine?

DarkDayforMN · 13/08/2022 10:48

ugh. Did he make a latex mask to resemble her face? At least stuff like that is a useful way of exposing the lie that drag is a “tribute” rather than hostile mockery.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 13/08/2022 11:41

They've just appointed some new Head of Disinformation so I'm concerned that she has an agenda to push.

drifttothecenter · 13/08/2022 11:47

A handmaiden no doubt

DarkDayforMN · 13/08/2022 11:49

I keep thinking that “disinformation correspondent” sounds way too on-the-nose!

The BBC ought to question whether they still have enough institutional credibility to tell people what “disinformation” is. I hope they don’t choose to squander their credibility further by taking this “disinformation” reporting in the direction of the American “fact checker” sites.

Coatandhat · 13/08/2022 11:56

I was so cross when I read that article. I'm definitely putting in a complaint (yet another) to the BBC. Pure propaganda. How can we believe anything else they report?
