Another great piece from Hadley. These people really don't like scrutiny.

great article

the only other time I’ve encountered an institution (as opposed to a celebrity) that expected to be able to control media coverage, it was the Church of Scientology, and that is not publicly funded

GIDS is dodgy as fuck isn't it?

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 09/08/2022 10:39

I wonder if 'John' recalls that conversation in the light of recent events and reflects upon his part in withholding scrutiny.

Saucery · 09/08/2022 10:43

She’s fantastic isn’t she. Can’t wait for her book.

SpindleInTheWind · 09/08/2022 10:49

Sounds like a very interesting book. I'd love to review it.

SapphosRock · 09/08/2022 11:27

Hadley Freeman is on fire! Another excellent article.

The letter from Dr Cass she mentions; has it been published? Googling it brings up one from 2021, but I think she's referring here to one from this year.

RoyalCorgi · 09/08/2022 11:44

The letter is here, DameHelena:

Thank you! She's a class act, I must say. It's full of good and well-informed sense.

FOJN · 09/08/2022 12:17

It's an excellent article.

Some posters in the comments section have expressed concern that it may be more difficult to scrutinise multiple regional hubs, that closing the Tavi is essentially a damage limitation PR exercise and it's ideology will just be disseminated to the regional hubs.

I think given John's response it's reasonable to remain sceptical that things will improve.

I think it's fair to say that a number of us have expressed similar concerns about the regional hubs in various comment threads.

Great article, and I hugely admire Hadley. Working at the Guardian must be hell these days for those who don’t toe the gender line.

Like FOJN, I’m worried that the GIDS ideology may infect regional mental-health services.

Also, I’m relieved that, in principle, children who think they’re trans may be now assessed for all possible causes of their distress. But I’m worried about what will really happen, knowing the pressure on the NHS, and the endless waiting lists for child mental-health services.

RoyalCorgi · 09/08/2022 13:26

Perhaps I'm a fool but I'm reasonably optimistic about the new clinics. I imagine the final Cass review will be quite robust in its critique of the Tavistock GIDS approach and its future recommendations. Coupled with the likelihood of legal action from de-transitioners (I don't think TullipR will be the only one), clinicians are likely to be much more cautious about sending children down a medical path than they have been up to now.

I'm with You there Corgi. Hope we're not being too optimistic.

TheBiologyStupid · 09/08/2022 17:05

An excellent article by Hadley (as usual). The Tavistock should: 1) be suitably embarrassed, 2) apologise at once, and 3) get in touch with Hadley about the interview that she wanted.
Hopefully it isn't too late in her book writing schedule - and if it is, they only have themselves to blame when their side of the story is omitted.

GoTeamRocket · 09/08/2022 17:39

It is a really good article. I am not sure whether it will be as simple as the Gids Tavistock clinic closing. Will the staff transfer (TUPE) across to the new provider.

'''The beachhead strategy' comes from the military strategy of winning a small border area that becomes a stronghold, and from which you can advance to the rest of the territory. The small border area is referred to as a beachhead.''
