There was a recent BBC article about an LGBT+ charity who arranged an emergency evacuation of some LGBT+ refugees from Afghanistan.
To make sure no one misinterprets me let me first say that these people were in danger, helping them was a good and laudable thing and I hope this charity can continue to be a lifeline for LGBT+ people at risk in Afghanistan.
This post is about the BBC coverage.
Something that stood out in the reporting was that the BBC chose to interview 2 gay men and a trans woman, so all male.
I don't know how many female people were on the flight that the BBC could have interviewed. Perhaps none. After all, to be at risk because you are publicly known as LGBT+ kind of implies you are allowed out in public. Or perhaps many on the flight were female but the BBC felt the most interesting interviewees were three male people.
I would have liked to see either some female interviewees or if there really were none (or none prepared to speak) some information about why that should be. Given the status of women in Afghanistan it seems important to notice and question when women seem to be missing.
