Came across these pronouns online today it really is a way for people who have too much time on their hands trying to come up with a personality and failing. This cannot be the future 😑Pronouns

What like Jem the fashion doll from the 80s. Is that a gender now????

TeenDivided · 21/07/2022 19:50

I saw Jem and thought of Scout & Jem from TKAMB

Riverlee · 21/07/2022 19:51

What does that even mean?

Chersfrozenface · 21/07/2022 19:55

Need to add those to my list.

Of my extensive selection, my current favourites are hic/haec/hoc.

They're mine after one too many prosseccos

By the end of the day, jay started throwing the frisbee to jemself.

Jay must be super speedy, or have learnt the art of throwing a frisbee so that it acts like a boomerang. Jay might find that focussing less on jemself and demanding jaer peers join jem in jaer special pronoun use, jay might have someone else to throw jaer frisbee to.

I can't be bothered with all this utter codswallop. I would not be able to interact with a neopronoun person, which they would probably interpret as transphobia, because it takes too much effort.

Emarjha · 21/07/2022 19:59

Jem is short for Jeremy so it’s going to get very confusing!

My thought too. I know a male Jem who would be unimpressed with this.

SerenaVanDerWoodsenHumphrey · 21/07/2022 20:08

I was picturing Jay throwing the frisbee straight up in the air and catching it, with Jem and the Holograms standing around applauding.

It actually would be good to have a third person singular pronoun that can be used for either sex, but people have to agree on one standard, and it shouldn't be they/them as that's potentially confusing. And not Jay and Jem, as those are people's names. I vote for Marge Piercy's person/per/pers/perself but TRAs won't be able to use a woman's/feminist's words because of misogyny. Perhaps LOJ or Cis Billy Bragg can come up with something.

PotteringPondering · 21/07/2022 20:08

Serious question. Isn't the point of pronouns that one (set of) pronouns refers to a large category of people (eg women)?

As people start identifying as ever more obscure niche identities and genders, with ever more obscure niche pronouns, aren't there almost as many sets of pronouns as there are individual people?

I know it's all mad bollocks anyway, but doesn't it actually undermine the point of pronouns?

bellinisurge · 21/07/2022 20:12

"If I promise not to discuss you behind your back because you are so fucking tedious, will you promise to fuck off to the other side of the fucking swamp" is what to say to these loons.

'Jem! Truly outrageous! Truly, truly, truly outrageous!'
She wasn't, at all.

Artichokeleaves · 21/07/2022 20:30

Yeah, no.

Will use name if person requires linguistic hoop jumping service from the rest of the world, and that's stretched my politeness to its absolute limits. Not using made up nonsense under any circumstances.

Frankly I see this and my brain goes 'this person is just too hard work to engage with' and switches off.

Yes, agree. Personal pronouns stand in place of a proper noun that has already been used or does not need to be specified. We use third person personal pronouns largely because it’s too awkward (although not incorrect) to say “Morgan just told me that Morgan needs to leave early because Morgan’s daughter is sick”. But actually that’s easier and clearer that “Morgan just told me that jay needs to leave early because jaer daughter is sick”, especially when you ALSO have to remember “Alex just told me that fae needs to leave early because faer daughter is sick” and "Kit just told me that xe needs to leave early because xyr daugher is sick" and so on for each person.

I actually like the idea that this thing people are calling "gender" could be evolving away from anything to do with sex stereotypes into a system of shared metaphors for highlighting a part of yourself you feel is significant and that you feel kinship with in others. Kind of like a patron Saint or a spirit animal or a band t shirt.

In that context, catkin and earthgender and the rest make complete sense, because they are just useful metaphors to express some aspect of a person.

It makes far more sense to me than this "it's an inner sense of being a man or a woman or neither that is more relevant in all ways than physical sex" idea which is patently incoherent as soon as you start to think about it properly.

The gazillions of pronouns might even work in that context. You'd kind of learn them alongside someone's name, like a short nickname for ease of use.

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 22/07/2022 10:10

Oh I think these are really pretty, I see that they're gender neutral and can be used by anyone...

Jee Jee went to the store
Accusative: Jem, e.g. I met jem today
Pronominal Possessive: Jeir, e.g. Jee walked jeir dog today
Predicative Possessive: Jeirs, e.g. If I need a phone my friend will let me borrow jeirs
Reflexive: Jemself, e.g. Jee had to drive jemself to school

The flag seems really pretty too https://www.deviantart.com/sirpurple04/art/Jee-Jem-Pronouns-898901793?ga_submit_new=10%3A1637825805

These so-called 'neopronouns' really are just more grammatically complex (different parts of speech) nicknames. They are not functioning as pronouns, the whole point of which is to make language simpler and more streamlined.

a way for people who have too much time on their hands trying to come up with a personality and failing seems about right.

I agree completely.

Chersfrozenface · 22/07/2022 14:10

I have enough trouble remembering people's names. If I have to memorise individual, and no doubt ever-changing, pronouns as well, I'll be giving up. When speaking, I'll pause, say "um" and then carry on with the sentence without any pronoun at all.

"I think (name)'s idea is a good one. (Pause), um, might like to consider the addition of..."

Actually, um / um's would make a very good universal third person singular pronoun.

Emarjha · 22/07/2022 15:31

This is the problem. It’s impossible to memorise pronouns for everyone. People who insist on being “special” are relying on 99% of people using sex based pronouns so the 1% can have their pronouns remembered.

applesandpears33 · 22/07/2022 21:13

I have an awful memory. I suspect I'll end up using they/them in these situations as it is probably the least offensive.

I would wonder why Morgan and Alex were telling you about Jay and Fae's sick children and be worried the children were seriously ill if Jay and Fae were in such a rush to leave they were unable to let you know themselves!

An entire social-justice movement, in a nutshell Grin
