Choreographer, Rosie Kay, on being thrown out of her own dance company

K2CO CEO & Artistic Director Rosie Kay discusses being accused of transphobia at a dinner party and founding a new dance troupe. Speaking to Andrew Doyle on GB News/Free Speech Nation. Honestly, listening to her makes me think about a certain revolution, where children turned in their parents to the Party (although, as she points out, the kids this time are in charge and the Party is under their control). So happy that she is back and working again - I hope she gets the funding she needs and we get the opportunity to see her work soon. What an impressive woman!

I’m happy to see this follow up, for her. So many women losing work opportunities because of this nonsense.

thanks for the update

What a great interview. Rosie is seriouslyimpressive, but equally how nice to have an interview where the interviewer listens, giving an occasional prompt. Then when the interviewee has said what she needs to say, switches to an informed conversation.

I became so frustrated by the badgering style that seemed to be used so often on BBC current affairs programmes that I gave up watching altogether. I don't need to agree with an interviewee, I do want them to have a chance to speak.

She is fantastic.

She makes the point brilliantly that this is about freedom of thought, and without that there is no art.
History shows authoritarianism comes for the artists first, they are the canaries in the coal mines.

What an extraordinary woman. The Hugh Laurie of the dance world! I'm so impressed by phenomenal artists with academic brilliance! Polymaths.

She is amazing!

How ironic given Woolf's "Room of One's Own" ...

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/07/2022 15:06

She's wonderful, and as pp have said, Andrew Doyle is a very good interviewer.

I will definitely look out for performances of 5 Soldiers next year, really excited to see it, her work sounds amazing.

I came on here to post about this as I just saw the interview online. I agree, the interview style was refreshing as most things I've seen on this topic feel stressful to watch just due to the badgering interviewers or defensive interviewees.

This woman is amazing, and it's so good to hear from an incredibly intelligent person who can explain so clearly her experience. Imagine finding out that your own board were looking into 're-educating' you, while also admitting you were likely more informed and knowledgeable on the subject than any trainer could possibly be! She was working WITH various LGBT groups etc in her research, not creating some one-sided transphobic piece. She explained that the fact she said the topic deserved to be debated was one of the key things those that complained about found offensive. FFS, how can people complain that a woman whose ACTUAL JOB is to explore controversial and taboo subjects wanted to debate something?

I'd never heard of this woman or her work before but I will certainly seek it out now. Her previous work sounds fascinating.

I watched the clip a few days ago and yes she sounds fabulous. She also has a new board made of some very interesting people from law, dance, art and the military.

This would make a terrific TV drama. Perhaps in a decade-or-so such subjects will be aired.

Artists and fascist thought have often clashed and Rosie Kay's experience added to that history, with her encountering those intent on restricting free thought-and-expression.

I wonder if the young people who tried to undermine her have reflected on this.
Or are they protected from uncomfortable thoughts by their group think?

I think they’re pretty well protected from thoughts generally.

@LillithCraneosaurus Many thanks for posting this. An excellent interview. I saw JK Rowling had posted her support for Rosie Kay. These women are inspiring.

Inspiring, articulate and intelligent woman. I will look out for her work and try to see one of her shows.
