You've clearly never read the Viz comic strip Fru T Bunn....

Well you're right and not wrong - Not gonna google that one 😁

I don’t have a problem here either, I agree it’s moving away from male as default and I’m good with that.

I also say cross on the green light as well, but daughter still calls it a man 🤷‍♀️

I don't think "Cross on the green light" is good advice to give to children. Cars move on the green light.

Green man or green woman or green person is correct and clear.

Deliriumoftheendless · 17/07/2022 18:44

You can’t usually see the traffic green light at a pedestrian crossing though, you see the green light in front of you.

also my kid is capable of realising which light I mean when I point at one.

PearlClutch · 17/07/2022 18:52

I miss the gingerbread men with the big cock and balls, myself.

JellySaurus · 17/07/2022 19:12

Nope. This is a case where gender neutral language is fine. But it is going to be the two-legs biscuit, as the biscuit-with-dress uses more ingredients => more expensive. So male-as-default or woman-in-trousers?

We make gingerbread people at home, both styles and sizes. In December we make paperchain people to decorate the house with.

Gender neutral language is fine when sex is irrelevant.

There are plenty of situations where you can see the green person and the green light.

You can of course choose to teach your children whatever you want-but "green man" or "person" is far clearer

Ontomatopea · 17/07/2022 19:21

Ginger bread person is fine. Women wear trousers too.

I'm trying to say green person but just hard as man is just so ingrained in me.

Namerchangerextraordinaire · 17/07/2022 19:24

They will never get my ninjabread man cutters.
Also have gingerbread men & women traditional shape cutters.

I love gingerbread & have loads of gingerbread themed things we get out at Christmas (including the Lego gingerbread men & woman).

If I get some small pleasure from breaking gingerbread mens legs off, or biting off their heads then nobody should be trying to stop me.

Try doing that with a nonbinary gingerbread person & some moron will accuse of you committing a hate crime.

JustWaking · 17/07/2022 21:26

XYZperson sounds awkward, and reinforces that there's a stereotype which we're pretending to ignore

(Don't think of a giraffe. Bet you just did!)

Better to enrich our language, rather than cut bits off:

  • Chair (rather than chairman.
It's certainly not going to be a chair duck!)
  • Firefighter
  • police officer
  • sports professional
  • gingerbread biscuit
  • Cross when the pedestrian light is green

It's really not hard!

AngelfishDecay · 18/07/2022 09:14

I present Fru T. Bunn...

NB baked goods!!
TheFeistyFeminist · 18/07/2022 09:22

I know adopting new language takes time, and I'm sure it's just a quirk of mine that I can work on, but somehow Gingerbread Person sounds a bit try-hard. Gingerbread People, or Gingerbread Characters feels a bit more like it flows naturally.

I know, I know. Just me.

Wink
JustWaking · 18/07/2022 09:47

Gingerbread People and Gingerbread Characters both sound good to me!

Ah, I did recently spot gingerbread men and women at an outlet on my university campus and wondered how much longer such a cis-normative atrocity would be allowed to continue for.

Is this an instantiation of heteropessimism do you feel?

Yes. I did learn heteropessimism today and insist on sharing it with you.

heteropessimism, a mode of feeling with a long history, and which is particularly palpable in the present. Heteropessimism consists of performative disaffiliations with heterosexuality, usually expressed in the form of regret, embarrassment, or hopelessness about straight experience. Heteropessimism generally has a heavy focus on men as the root of the problem. That these disaffiliations are “performative” does not mean that they are insincere but rather that they are rarely accompanied by the actual abandonment of heterosexuality. Sure, some heteropessimists act on their beliefs, choosing celibacy or the now largely outmoded option of political lesbianism, yet most stick with heterosexuality even as they judge it to be irredeemable. Even incels, overflowing with heteropessimism, stress the involuntary nature of their condition.
Social media is a playground of performative disidentification, and heteropessimism thrives there.

You fiend 😂I knew I wouldn't want to see it, and now I can't unsee it

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 18/07/2022 13:26

@EmbarrassingHadrosaurus Well thanks to Angelfish hetropessimism wasn't the only thing I learned about on this thread but it is the one I'll try to remember rather than the one I'll try to forget :-)

Except they usually are the default male

Exactly my point!

NoMoreLifts · 18/07/2022 13:52

Always the 'green girl' at crossings for my lot.

Collidascope · 18/07/2022 13:59

Funny that the moral of The Gingerbread Man is to be aware that there are predators about even if they do pretend that their motives are completely pure.

JustWaking · 18/07/2022 14:46

Very true, collidascope! Although in more recent versions, the gingerbread snack tends to escape.

Has anyone else noticed that in the last 10 years or so, stories/cartoons often have bright youngsters outwitting dull, stupid adults? We would perhaps do well to teach our children the original story...
