Good article on what Starmer needs to do

There's a very good article on the Labour Uncut website which sets out the three things Starmer needs to do to win the next election.

  1. Focus on the political not the personal now Boris is gone

  2. Focus on policies

  3. Clean up Labour’s act on women’s rights.

It's written by a former Labour Party Manager and quite rightly sets it out as a women's rights issue, not a trans rights one.

A leader who, at his own party conference, struggled to state clearly what a woman actually was, is now not trusted by a growing segment of Britain’s women, particularly those who are politically active. And, while Labour continues to support the politically-suicidal policy of trans self id, that group will continue to grow.

If you are one of Labour’s many members and supporters who still firmly believe “this never comes up on the doorstep”, or “it’s not important, it will never swing anyone’s votes”, let me tell you two things. First, you are probably a man.

If Labour had any sense they'd take note of this. But sadly I suspect they won't.

If Starmer cared he would have done something by now.

Hoardasurass · 17/07/2022 12:11

It would seem that the wheels are finally coming off the tra bus. Let's hope Stammer listens

teawamutu · 17/07/2022 12:36

It is a good piece. Whether Labour are listening is doubtful.

Floisme · 17/07/2022 12:53

As far as my vote is concerned, Starmer doesn't need to do anything at all other than convince me that he will leave my current rights as they are. I don't think I could make it any easier for him - he literally needs to do nothing.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 17/07/2022 13:25

Me too Floisme. It's not hard get my vote back - an acknowledgment that women as a sex class exist as a distinct entity, ensuring that all the labour women currently being silenced are allowed to voice their democratic views and the party sanctioning any members who threaten and harass women for speaking out about legitimate views.

It's so ironic that these issues are being openly debated in the tory party yet labour is completely unable to manage this.

achillestoes · 17/07/2022 13:28

He needs to do more for me. He needs to reverse the woman-erasure and defend freedom of expression (he won’t).

MarshaBradyo · 17/07/2022 13:30

There are a fair few people telling Starmer what he needs to do

He hasn’t done them but he’s stuck in the quagmire on this issue

For me it’s likely too late even if he blows with the wind but I also wonder who he is listening to who is saying go with the TRA

Is it funding?

greengoose21b · 17/07/2022 16:30

Some quite positive noises from Rachel Reeves, which certain quarters are obviously demanding she be sacked for.

EddyReadyGo · 17/07/2022 16:36

What I don't get tho, if that this has been a clear issue for a couple of years at least. It must be clear in the data that women have left the party and are no longer helping out OR the data doesn't show anything.

Either way someone in Labour data science must be able to tell KS if this is a real issue or not, and he can act accordingly.

Maybe one for Tim Hartford !

EddyReadyGo · 17/07/2022 16:37

obvs it is a 'real issue' but if it is as detrimental to labour as it appears. Badly explained.

MangyInseam · 17/07/2022 23:35

I've wondered if Starmer's main problem isn't that he is a weak party leader.

I am not overly find of heavy handed party leadership, but in practice a leader who can't create a certain amount of unity around a vision, or impose a certain amount of discipline, is going to fail. After all if someone can't create some level of unity in the party how can he or she create it in the electorate?

It seems to me like the Tories are much better at rallying round a leader, whether that is because the leaders are more comfortable imposing discipline or the MPs bring themselves into line. Though when the leader loses the confidence of MPs he's out in short order.

Labour on the other hand seems to keep these weak characters around and so their messaging is all over the place.

I feel politically homeless at the moment. Whenever I think about Labour, I can't get past this:

I’ve emailed her to show my support and copied Starmer in.

The other parties cannot be ignorant of the controversy stirred up over Penny Mordaunt. I believe they'll start to row back a bit, after all we know that young people don't vote, older ones do. We also know a General Election is on its way, possibly sooner rather than later. We must all keep the pressure up on our local MPs.

ScrollingLeaves · 18/07/2022 10:57

I already put this on another thread, but in case anyone is interested.

The Labour Women’s Declaration wants to stand up for women and children.

On the other hand, Rachel Reeves managed to say something about single sex spaces in public which might have been taboo before. So that is a small sign for the better.

People just don’t understand though the extent to which this is an issue about the safety and well being of women and children, and also about resisting the trans activist authoritarianism complete with ideological indoctrination that has even been infiltrating schools.

Thank you RubyTrees, that string of idiocy from their own mouths is shocking.

The apartheid one is very troubling. Does he really think that, say, in African countries without apartheid black women are not allowed women’s lavatories and other spaces separate from their black men?

Who could vote for anyone who says these things that just don’t make sense.

Rowlingfan · 18/07/2022 11:24

Thank you to the previous poster who mentioned Rachel Reeves’ comments. (I’m not on Twitter) I too have emailed her to thank her and wish her luck in any forthcoming conversation with Starmer.

☀️

Floisme · 18/07/2022 11:31

I was pleased to see Rachel Reeves speak up, but I'm even more pleased to see the Labour Women's Declaration and Conservatives for Women retweeting each other and talking openly about cross party work. This is the way forward for me because, regardless of who wins the next election, I will never trust a single party with my rights again.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 18/07/2022 15:11

Agela Raynor has expanded the trans mantra by saying "transwomenns rights are women's rights"

I assume that's not only an attack on women generally, but Rachel Reeves particularly.

I don't think Starmer has the motivation or ability to sort this mess out for the Labour party.

@ScrollingLeaves yep, Barry Gardiner's comment is shocking. Can't trust any of the others either when they seem perfectly happy to spout nonsense.

I'll do that tomorrow, making clear her view is the one way to regain my vote.
