My mum was in m and s today trying to buy a happy birthday granddaughter card.

Apparently their cards are now all gender neutral and non-binary. So no references in any of the cards at all.

Now I wasn't there but I think my mum has the gist of what is going on.

This is ducking madness.

Why do greeting cards need to be gendered?

Because when I want to tell my sister how wonderful she's been I don't want to give her a 'Great Sibling' card. And I don't want to tell my mum she's a fantastic parent, I want to tell her she's the best mum.

etc, etc

Why do you need a card to tell your sister she is your sister?

I don't understand "named relative" cards. They're usually naff anyway. Why not just get a nice/ funny/ pretty/ offensive/ whatever card?

I was in M&S yesterday and they had a full range of cards to cover every family member.

So this is totally untrue.

This.

Because it proves one got off one's ass,
one then trotted off to the shops,
one spent time looking at the pretty pics,
one read the inner poem,

One invested the time to buy a personal card rather than pulling out the random Oh Fuckie Fuckie Fuck I Forgot card.

Greeting cards don’t need to be gendered. Nobody is saying they do. But there’s nothing wrong with them being for a sister or a brother.

I don’t understand all the ‘why does X need to be this or do that’ talk. We don’t need to send cards or gifts at all. We don’t need to give each other names. Numbers would do just as well. We don’t need to describe things. We don’t need to express emotions or recount histories.

We do these things because we feel like it.

ozymandiusking · 14/07/2022 19:30

Some of us want to buy gender specific cards. YOU don't have to .But the majority of us would like a choice!!!!!
I am absolutely sick and tired of all this fucking shit about gender, sex, trans whatever. And the seeming ambition to compltely obliterate WOMEN.
God help us.
We're going to hell in a handcart.

Cuck00soup · 14/07/2022 20:09

Probably not what the OP intended but things like this actually give me hope. Greetings card manufacturers aren't going to stop printing cards with the word mother on.

Because they make a load more profit from people buying cards for mothers than they ever would from selling cards for birthing people.

More evidence that women are allowed to be called mothers when it ma££ers.

But these generic cards aren't personal- quite the opposite.

Buying a truly personal card needs you to put some effort into it. You buy a card which means something to the person, which refers to their likes and interests. There's no thought needed to buy some bland, generic "greatest sister" card.

Under a Labour government they would forced to.

Those cards won’t go. Some people will believe that men can be mothers, sisters, aunts etc and will want to buy them for their male mother. I don’t think we’re in any danger of losing “happy birthday sister” cards, however screwed up the debate is over whether your sister is a woman or not gets.

Why do people claim to 'not understand' things when what they really mean is "I don't like them, so nobody should"? You do realise that nice/pretty/funny/offensive are subjective views and depend on personal taste, right?

I'm not a fan of 'named' greetings cards either, but that doesn't mean I need to impose my taste on others. Nobody needs named greetings cards, but why shouldn't they be able to buy them if they want to?!

That's where the reading (and time) comes into it.🙄, 😉😏

PurpleDaisies · 15/07/2022 08:48

I’d have thought a fair few busy people would quite like to buy a card they don’t have to put much thought into. There’s obviously a market for them.

No , I did mean "don't understand". I don't like these cards but I also don't understand what the point of them is.

I didn't say anything about not being able to buy them.

I got my post withdrawn because I didn't scribble out my name on an image from my Twitter. It is categorically not true, sorry!

Now to go and figure out what the hell my mum was on about!!

DB sends me those sort of cards. Although they are a bit naff, I find this quite endearing Smile

Davros · 15/07/2022 16:19

I was in M&S earlier and it's partly true. Some cards still say, E.G. "Nan" or Nephew", but the designs have become very uniform and a bit vanilla. See below

They’ve always been like that. Nothing to do with gender politics as the op alleged.

user1471504747 · 15/07/2022 17:12

Maybe this was just a great marketing move to get us all to look at M&S cards Grin
