EE 'not her problem' campaign against sexism in football

Was very pleasantly surprised by this campaign ahead of the Euros. Squarely placing the responsibility on men to resolve sexism in football, and a great advert showing what female footballers go through.

To everyone saying companies should shut up, who else is going to be funding these initiatives?
Who else has ever funded them before?
I’d love to have unbranded anti-sexism campaigns too- but without corporate cash there haven’t been any that can afford to put ads on public billboards and repeatedly on prime time TV.
So I’m not going to look this gift horse in the mouth. Men are the problem. It names that fact. Its a brilliant start.

Well I'm definitely fence sitting on this advert, it has good and bad points. I sort of see it as women in the course of their sport suffer these injuries, then heal so why pile more on by being sexist.

But the advert funding thing, I think posie parker did a pretty good job of getting quite a few adverts in some brilliant places, granted not TV adverts, but give her a bit more time and some funding and she could do it too.

I hate it. I think all it will do is get men's backs up and make the hatred increase even more. It should've said 'it's our problem' to unite people together. Because it is a problem for women, and it's a problem from men.

roarfeckingroarr · 26/07/2022 16:47

EE are part of BT, who (I think) own the rights to the Women's Euros.

I like the message.

beastlyslumber · 27/07/2022 16:29

I think EE should just stick to selling phone data. I don't want companies moralising at me.

I also think it's just unfair as let's face it, it's not 'men' as a group who are the problem here, but teenage boys and inadequates and bots. It's a minority of idiots, not men as a whole.

I may be alone in this, but I really dislike the period blood stain on the woman's shorts... Yes, periods are a normal part of life, but it's also a private part of life, not something that we need to share with strangers. I would rather keep a bit of a taboo around it.

I don't think the message is very clear actually. Most of it seemed to be about bad/difficult things faced by women footballers. We didn't actually see any sexist hate did we? I totally agree with the message and if EE are sponsoring the tournament I think it's very appropriate for them to do an advert about sexism but this didn't seem to make its point very well

I think it is a very unclear message and has missed an opportunity to have a massive impact on the way some men think.

dogeatworld · 27/07/2022 16:38

Men who have not been educated or brought up to respect women need clearer, simpler messaging to help them understand. This will make them confused and defensive and subsequently change nothing .

I don't understand the first half of the ad. Are they listing things that are women's problems? Never seen so many horrific injuries and just generally it was confusing. Why could a penalty be a problem?

They’re listing problems that the women will have to deal with. They have to deal with their injuries, with children, with their period, with penalties - all things they will have to solve. They don’t need to solve sexist hate. That’s the point. I’m confused as to how you can’t see that a penalty could be a problem?

And I’m glad they showed the injuries. Football is a beautiful game but it’s also bloody and people do have a temper on the pitch! It’s a contact sport. Why should women be portrayed as lovingly swanning around the pitch giving each other hugs? It takes dedication and passion. There’s shouting and shoving and accidental studs to the legs. There’s massive comraderie too. (Not as much diving as the men though!)

It’s an advert showing the real game and I like it.

Yes, but unless you know what the ad is about, you have no idea for the first 30 seconds what is going on.

I have never heard of a penalty being referred to as a problem. It is an incredible odd way of describing the opposition receiving a penalty.

Except those kinds of injuries do not happen at the rate implied by the ad. I never said anything about "lovingly swanning around the pitch", that was entirely your interpretation. Quite funny to be honest.

It is a contact sport.
Part of its origins trace back to village against village melee in fair days. Think throwing a football into the middle of a drinkers pub and saying whoever gets it into the local parish hall wins free drink for a year.

The game is physical and a lot of the rules are designed around preventing dangerous playing.
Even non-human contact eg sliding across ground can cause bruising and remove a strip of skin, balls can hurt too. And in studs on boots and tackling and bodies colliding at speed and it can hurt and cause serious damage by accident.

The phrase play the ball not the man is about one team setting out to hobble(by injury) the other teams best players.

The penalty would be a problem as the individual members of both teams at compeditive level have worked long and hard to get to play and a refs decision can be the difference between loosing a player or even a win or a loss. At times the decision will be disputed due to a difference of opinion on the facts (but sometimes it ego). Women will be just as compeditive as the men and they want to win so argue the decision.

Are you explaining football to me because you disagree with my interpretation of the ad and thus feel like I don't know anything about football? Most curious.

Women are much more likely to suffer ACL tears than men, this often happens completely without opposition contact. Could highlight that as a problem for women instead of making it seem like the game is like rugby. Have you seen any of these Euro games? Can you honestly tell me that the ad comes even close to portraying how those games are going?

They might somewhat resemble Sunday League butchers. Which I have no problem with, but it isn't relevant to the Euros and the game overall. In fact, if anything I suspect this was included in the ad to make the women's game seem tougher than it is (I saw a tiktok about exactly this, someone saying "men like neymar cry on the floor, women get it done" sort of thing, and I can tell you it backfired massively, because while yes, neymar is a joke, the men's game is far, far more physical). I enjoy the games exactly because they aren't overly physical. For instance, I watched my club in the 2. Bundesliga play on the weekend and the game was less entertaining than many of the Euro games. Because both teams were very physical and closed down opponents quickly, not giving them space and time. So the attacks of both teams were quite poor as a consequence. In these Euro games, the teams generally have much more space and time which means they can actually play the game, which to me makes it more interesting. But it certainly is far less physical. Which is also why women's national teams lost to boys in the past. I would love to see the current Spanish or English teams take on a boys team. The women's game has improved a lot in the last 5 years even (2015 World Cup was atrocious in comparison to the standard at these Euros in my opinion).

You may wish to reply to someone in a manner that doesn't (supposedly) require them to read all your contributions on top of your reply. Not that I think reading any of your other posts will magically change the words in your response to me.
