Lovely stuff going on on Twitter. Joanne is joining the convo with grace and calmness as usual. ❤️

Macy Gray has backtracked 😕
“I have nothing but love for the LGBTQ+ and transgender community and have been a supporter since Day One. My statement on Piers Morgan was grossly misunderstood. I don't hate anyone. I respect everyone's right to feel comfortable in their bodies and live their own truth."

I don’t see this as backtracking at all.
I agree with everything she’s put here. I still don’t believe males can identify into womanhood in a way that oversteps the biological differences.
I support transwomen having a right to fair treatment. Being able to access housing, employment and health care without discrimination. Being able to live their lives happily and safely.
I do not support transwomen being housed in women’s prisons, using female changing facilities, accessing prizes or scholarships for women, etc.

I agree completely.

She’s un-backtracked...

PearlClutch · 06/07/2022 19:00

That’s me told! Definitely not a backtrack. Amazing! 😄

Although apparently writing headlines that could be seen as a veiled threat as well as abuse is fine:

Say Goodbye To Macy Gray — She Outed Herself As A TERF

And Bette's original over 100k.

I genuinely thought this was parody at first.

😂

Don’t get it.

Does it identify as a joke?

GrinAndVomit · 09/07/2022 11:03

This has made my blood run cold. What did they do to her to get that ridiculous turn around?

bellinisurge · 09/07/2022 12:04

Mar 🐪! Awesome.

Just to point out that ‘I learned a lot’ is an acting euphemism.

It’s what you say when you’re under contract to publicise something, but working on it was a truly dreadful experience. But, you know, you learned a lot…

ofwarren · 09/07/2022 12:17

Mark removed his 'like'.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 09/07/2022 15:55

Everyone can see what’s going on at this stage, even genderists know the recantations aren’t sincere. I don’t think it even helps their cause any more to force a recantation. It just raises awareness that people are scared.

Did Bette actually recant by the way, or did she just do the “I was misunderstood” thing?

At least none of them threw “TERFs” under the bus to escape like Margaret Atwood did, though to be fair to MA she’s in her eighties and there were black clad thugs sharing her home address.

Caught this on Twitter, haven't seen it discussed here but might have missed it?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-entertainment/2022/07/06/bette-midler-macy-gray-transgender-advocates/

This execrable opinion piece from the Washington Post ticks all the usual boxes - dishonest, misogynistic, racist 'intersectional' bollocks, flinging the horrid t**fs in with religious loons, trans kids whataboutery, patronising that Bette and Macy were too doddery to really know what they were saying... And of course a trans person's sage-like wisdom that "there's no one criteria that all women share".

It's so awful. However the comments are a thing of joy! I've scrolled down a way and absolutely no-one is having it. Snatching a bit of victory from the jaws of defeat on a Monday morning.

The Pink News thread led to Uncommon Ground and to this recent article by Dr Em, they should read it:

The Washington Post comments are fabulous. They are like the Times comment section c2019, or even better. So many comments really setting it out and explaining what the issues are. The comments in favour of the article are embarrassing in comparison. They have allowed themselves to exist in a #nodebate bubble, so when they try and engage with people who don't agree, they have nothing. They have absolutely nothing.

And there's something more well developed about it than was the case here a few yrs ago. The debate has been raging here for 4 years or more, that comment section suggests pent up demand for debate in America now.

I wonder what Washington post will do? They have tried to hide the comments by showing there are zero comments when in fact there are thousands. Will they just close comments in similar future articles?
