Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Accused of breaking the law!

By some digbat in The Times comments section, so bit of a nonstory, but irked me all the same - my crime? Writing 'transgender women are not female' I'm sure some years ago we were all told that sex and gender are not the same...

I've reported it for misinformation and hopefully the accusation will be removed, but these people are so incredibly sure of themselves aren't they.

Yeah stating bio sex is real is not breaking the law.
I had to come off twitter one of the reasons was the constant stream of idiots telling me I was breaking laws by saying males are men/humans cannot change sex/TWANW and other similar statements.

People can be idiots.

Plasmodesmata · 30/06/2022 18:10

I do wonder how much longer we'll be able to teach Biology without "breaking the law".

wonderstuff · 30/06/2022 18:18

Hopefully indefinitely - what law could be passed to stop the discussion of biological reality? Who is getting upset by all this? The actual story was about Warner Bros Studios apologising for distancing themselves from JKR earlier in the week. Hopefully the tide is actually starting to turn.

Unfortunately it depends what country you're in.

I'm sure a feminist in Norway was recently imprisoned for saying a male can't be a lesbian.

Some people in this country are desperate to get "hate crime" laws extended to include saying things that are true... So although what you said isn't illegal in the UK for the time being we can't take this for granted.

CrossStichQueen · 30/06/2022 18:24

I always ask what law am I breaking and its usually met with silence or misquoting of the EA2010.

SarahShorty · 30/06/2022 18:27

My opinion, although very cynical; JKR is a money-maker for Warner Bros Studios, so unlikely to drop her anyway.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 30/06/2022 18:29

I have no instinctive understanding of whether or not such a comment would be illegal in, say, Canada.

FunnyTalks · 30/06/2022 18:29

TRAs act as if we're being especially cruel to describe transwomen as male. But it is a situation entirely of their own making. If TRAs hadn't appropriated the word woman, if they hadn't bulldozed through women's rights and boundaries, we'd not need to draw attention to this fact. We'd have all been together, fighting for rights for trans people as trans people. It is a sad situation which only benefits abusive males, not most trans people.

This exactly what happened!

On Monday WB Studios London said she had nothing to do with them during an interview with Tom Felton, yesterday they backtracked saying this was stated in error and of course they had worked with her for 20 years and were proud to. .

Was that some guy called Timothy..... ? I can't remember the last name he uses. I've been told by him that I'm breaking the law as well.

wonderstuff · 30/06/2022 19:56

Indeed it was, apparently saying TWANW is discrimination, not sure how.

OP posts:
Igneococcus · 30/06/2022 20:12

He probably accused you of prejudice too :)

wonderstuff · 30/06/2022 21:21

Its like TRA bingo

These people just throw a lot of shit at the wall to see what sticks.

Nor I and I'm Canadian. I just googled a number of different phrases but can't find an answer.

Justme56 · 30/06/2022 22:39

Transwomen are always going to be biologically male. Those without a GRC are also legally male under UK law. They are male (sex) with the protected characteristic of Gender Reassignment.

Davros · 30/06/2022 23:34

Only if they have had gender reassignment?

AlisonDonut · 30/06/2022 23:43

Writing 'transgender women are not female

What is a transgender woman?

A male who identifies as a women [transwoman]
or
A female who identifies as a man [transman]

Who knows? I'd say the second one...

Your Times comment was literal violence against trans people OP, literal violence I tell you!!!

Davros · 30/06/2022 23:34

Only if they have had gender reassignment?

You can have the protected characteristic of Gender Reassignment without actually having undergone through any reassignment process, because the wording of the act is that you're protected if you're proposing to do so. However, it doesn't give you the right to be treated as the gender you're proposing to be reassigned to, just not to be treated less favourably than someone with the same protected characteristics who isn't proposing to go through gender reassignment.

Coyoacan · 01/07/2022 02:42

We'd have all been together, fighting for rights for trans people as trans people

No offense, but trans people have all their human rights in the UK, fortunately enough, what the TRAs want is to take women's rights away.

That is because they are being entirely dishonest about their argument.

dunBle thanks for the explanation Hmm
I thought it probably wasn't that simple
