How would you describe your gender identity?

Work are requesting us to complete a diversity questionnaire and this is one question. The options are: Woman/man/non-binary/prefer not to say/other

I think I've read stuff on here before saying choose other and state "I don't have a gender identity" but would that skew the results? Or could I complain about the question?

I was a bit concerned it would be all about gender bollocks but there are also questions about sexual orientation and disabilities.

I am who I am - I'm me

caringcarer · 02/07/2022 04:50

Tick don't wish to say.

Rosehugger · 02/07/2022 05:01

Prefer not to say. As in, I don't need or want to wear a badge declaring it, pronouns or anything else.

Rosehugger · 02/07/2022 05:06

If they don't record sex, how do they work out the gender pay gap stats? (Ironic that it is called that, though I guess the sex pay gap may be confused with payment for sex or similar).

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 02/07/2022 06:13

I tickled "Other" in the National census, and in a similar questionnaire at work.

I'm thinking of complaining that work have me down as gender = female on my personal record. They've obviously changed the name of the previous "sex" field. Not sure if I'm brave enough.

NotTerfNorCis · 02/07/2022 07:00

When I had to do this at my workplace I ticked 'prefer not to say'.

Oblomov22 · 02/07/2022 07:03

"I don’t believe in gender identity.
My sex is female."

I like this!

eurochick · 02/07/2022 07:51

I tick other and write "I don't have a gender identity. My biological sex is female".

The point made above about the basis for collecting the data is a good one. Gender identity is not a protected characteristic so why do they want to know?

UltimateIrritant · 02/07/2022 02:21

I am who I am - I'm me

Agree 100% with this.

I just don't understand this whole 'identify as', why does it matter? I'm me and that's that.

WelshMoth · 02/07/2022 09:04

Marking space for future help as I foresee things like this coming my way. My brand new and shiny SLT love surveys and given that there's a colourful flag on every department wall now, I think I can see where things are heading.

Sorry OP, nothing useful to add but don't want to lose this valuable thread .

dudsville · 02/07/2022 09:08

There are people for whom this is a way of thinking, but it isn't mainstream, and it's not the way i think. I don't have a gender identity. To me the question is akin to asking me my favourite country musician. I just don't.

balalake · 02/07/2022 12:06

Let us know OP if you get a response to your email.

@Tiphaine "because not everyone’s gender identity is consistent with their legal sex and we don’t capture this information anywhere else"

The T&Cs linked to the survey say that the data is used:
o to produce summary reports by which we can monitor workforce numbers across different demographic groups.
o inform baselines and subsequent targeted action plans to address areas of under-representation.
o prepare for possible future ethnicity/disability pay gap reporting requirements.
o be transparent with our team members and/or customers on the current state & our commitments to improve our diversity.
o link to other people data to track representation and people moves by demographic (E.g. Promotions, leavers, representation by level etc).
o link to engagement survey data, totrack engagement & feedback by demographic and further refine DEI strategies.

Are they saying that they can link your staff number with your answers to this survey and thus analyse the results by sex as well as by the gender identity question? This would be fine if they could be sure that they aren’t damaging the representativeness of their data by disincentivising people like you from answering. They could be introducing a bias that disadvantages gender critical people unless they clearly explain why they’re not asking a question on sex.

Alienbigcat45 · 02/07/2022 13:04

Keep complaining. I work for a big organisation that can be very navel gazing and loves to wave a rainbow flag. When asked about gender identity we now have the option of 'none' and it's made clear the question isn't about sex. This is a recent change and must be due to pressure from staff. Some HR depts have clearly noticed the Maya ruling.

JacquelinePot · 02/07/2022 13:13

Prefer not to sat and 'other' still both imply the respondent has a gender identity which is patently bullshit.

As for linking responses back to individuals, that is not standard practice and as someone said upthread, will likely introduce bias. They should make this really clear in the email invite, and not just tuck it away in the t&cs (which most won't read). It's pretty shit all round.

If the majority of people are listed as 'agender' this daft ideology will soon reveal itself as unworkable.

'which regressive simplistic stereotypes do you prefer to agree with?'

If you are obese, do you identify as a 'cheerful'; if you identify as Scottish are you a) a miser b) drunk or c) ginger? If you are a woman are you a) slutty, b) a bimbo or c) saintly/virginal?

Do you identify more as a GI Joe or a Barbie?

Are you Aquarian or do you identify more as Sagittarius?

Perhaps we should be ticking other and putting star signs, I think thats a really good idea

GoodThinkingMax · 02/07/2022 13:37

When I'm asked this question, I tick "Other" and then fill in the "Further details" by saying "I do not have a gender identity. My sex is female."

darcyesque · 02/07/2022 14:01

Second this: these surveys normally collect data on a range of PCs (age, ethnicity, disability etc) So if sex is the only one left out, that's indirect discrimination.

ChimChimeny · 05/07/2022 11:45

I replied again with snippets from a few responses so thank you all for your.help.

As.a.result for the next survey they are going to speak to the expert.external advisors to reviews the gender identity question because they appreciate that it caN be more inclusive than. It currentlY is. Y

They are also going to provide.more context and explain why they are asking the questions

So.I'm not completing it this time but I'll see what the next one says...
