The Independent encouraging unsafe and illegal surgeries

The Independent is running a biased piece about two transwomen operating an illegal surgery in the Pacific North East between 2004 and 2006, using ‘an autoclave and a cauterisation machine bought on eBay.’

They’re calling it ‘legendary’, rather than illegal, unlicensed, unethical and dangerous.

For The Independent, the Twitter comments are particularly special: ‘sounds like a horror movie’ and ‘FBI’.

How dangerous is this? Doesn’t this encourage the unqualified to attempt botched surgeries on people who are unwell? They should be ashamed of themselves.

The whole movement is dangerous, and sick.

achillestoes · 30/06/2022 07:34

I don’t think the paper could do more harm to the people they’re trying to help if they had a day-long brainstorm on how to completely screw them over.

Can someone please explain to me what's different about the situation in the OP and this:

legendary?

AndStand · 30/06/2022 10:12

Well I wish I'd not googled Mao Sugiyama! I feel sick.

achillestoes · 30/06/2022 10:15

That is seriously wrong.

It’s like the Independent was saving the most crazy story of all for the final day of Pride month.

I tried to put in a complaint to IPSO (my first one ever), only to discover that the Independent is not a member. I will need to write to them directly it seems.

It is dangerous for a mainstream newspaper to be platforming such material. These guys were literally “cowboys”, performing castrations in a barn! Of course taking the utmost care not to misgender their clients along the way tho.

This "article" (or: advert for butchery) is a shocker. It's uncritical and irresponsible eg this quote "overall the DIY orch is very simple and teachable". Yes there's a link to the source but there's no explanation of what it is, and it's presented as some kind of simple solution with a sweet nickname:

"For trans women, an "orchi" can relieve gender dysphoria and allow them to stop taking testosterone blocking drugs, which can have unpleasant side effects"

It goes on: "Abortion and trans healthcare are the same fight". No they are not.

The subject is presented as though it's part of a rebel movement, something cool and edgy. And it's hopelessly one-sided, making a quick reference to confidentiality as to why they can't verify anything. Well if you can't, maybe don't publish? Or maybe reach out and see if people come forward? It's not just as though the "only" option is to publish this.

It's been archived on the wayback machine if you don't want to go to the link.

achillestoes · 30/06/2022 11:47

It’s probably a load of nonsense anyway.

The Independent seem to have lost the plot. The other day they had an article about "all the right people" being offended by Halifax. I was like they were trying to out-pink Pink News.

ScreamingMeMe · 30/06/2022 13:28

I've seen this story before, can't remember where. Isn't one of them now a prominent TRA living in Northern Ireland?

LK1972 · 30/06/2022 13:38

This Indy? 'Owner(s)
Evgeny Lebedev (41%)[1][2]
Sultan Muhammad Abuljadayel (30%)[1][2]
Justin Byam Shaw (26%)[2]
Minor shareholders (3%)[2]' (from Wiki)

Lol, is Evgeny Lebedev trying to distance himself from the source of his wealth (former KGB oligarch daddy) by proving what a good right-on British citizen he is and going full-on TRA? Smile

'legendary?'
= 'happens at the top end of yer leg'?

zanahoria · 30/06/2022 16:20

So owned by a Russian oligarch mate of Boris and some dodgy Saudis??

Is the Indy just a false flag operation to give liberals a bad name?

zanahoria · 30/06/2022 16:24

"In an era when trans people were routinely blocked from life-saving healthcare, and often discriminated against or abused by medical staff, this clinic aimed to treat its patients with respect and never charged more than $500 for a procedure that usually cost thousands"

Saving lives by chopping their balls off with dodgy equipment from eBay?

RichardsGear · 30/06/2022 16:24

How many paying guests can one penis and a pair of balls feed?!
