Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

If there is a Labour leadership contest

babyjellyfish · 29/06/2022 12:37

Who would gender critical feminists want to replace Keir Starmer?

Is anyone here still a Labour member, with a vote? Whose name would you like to see on the ballot paper?

I was a member. I resigned my membership. I can’t think of anyone other than Rosie Duffield who would be a useful leader.

achillestoes · 29/06/2022 12:52

But in the last contest there were four women and Starmer, weren’t there? Tells you everything you need to know.

babyjellyfish · 29/06/2022 12:53

Sadly I can't see Rosie being an option.

I reckon Wes Streeting or Yvette Cooper seem like the least insane options, which I realise is damning with faint praise.

I can imagine that the only way a woman will be selected as leader of the Labour Party would be on an all woman shortlist. And even then it would be possible for a man to win.

achillestoes · 29/06/2022 13:03

I used to like Cooper. Streeting seems sane but that might just mean he’s clever enough to hide his real opinions.

babyjellyfish · 29/06/2022 13:05

I think if Streeting was genuinely TWAW he would say it loud and proud like the rest of them.

So I think he is sane but trying to walk that tightrope.

Andy Burnham is a favourite I think but unfortunately he signed the letter urging government to speed up changes to the GRA to allow for self-ID.

That was a few years ago now though and, as they say, "the conversation has evolved since then" (aka has been allowed at all, no more no-debate). So his opinion on this might have evolved but I actually don't know.

Yvette Cooper is an obedient wokester. No use at all.

To be honest, I don't give a shit who wins, I'm still not voting Labour at the election.

babyjellyfish · 29/06/2022 13:07

I won't be voting for them either, but since they might win, I still want the leader to be the least worst option!

Tbf, Starmer was the only one who didn’t sign some silly TRA letter. That’s why I voted for him!

I would love it if Rosie Duffield ran. Outsider candidates are sometimes successful (see Corbyn)

Artichokeleaves · 29/06/2022 13:10

Deckchairs on the Titanic at this point really.

The answer is for sane politicians (most of whom have left Labour by this point) from all parties to set up a new centre left party rooted in reality and common sense. It's an open goal right now, about three quarters of the UK have no party they would actually want to vote for.

Reekingpitofdoom · 29/06/2022 13:11

I’ve started to rate Streeting a lot higher and Matt Chorley has referred to him on Times Radio as one of Labour’s more able parliamentarians

theclangersarecoming · 29/06/2022 13:11

Was it Cooper’s son who was recently protesting something as a TRA? I found her totally disappointing last time she stood - she ought to have been able to win outright given her experience, and it was like she didn’t even try (or just couldn’t get any charisma going at all….)

Wes Streeting is clever enough to hide what he thinks now, but he wasn’t a few years back. I’m not at all sure I’d trust him on this.

There’s such a dearth of good experienced people willing to put their heads above the parapet in Labour - Corbyn and his lot basically nobbled anyone who had a chance at challenging them, and the party is just left with tumbleweed for talent. Such a disappointment.

babyjellyfish · 29/06/2022 13:14

Oh yeah I forgot about the TRA nutter son.

OP posts:
Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/06/2022 13:23

I can't support Streeting because of the secret "Labour Against Transphobia" Facebook group in 2018 set up by TRA Lily Madigan and friends to purge GC feminists from the Labour Party. He was a member. For this, and other reasons, I left the party as a member.

Agree that Rosie Duffield isn't a leadership candidate and I imagine quite reasonably doesn't want to be one in the first place. If Yvette said anything that indicated she understood the issue for women I could possibly get behind her.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 29/06/2022 13:25

Was it Cooper’s son who was recently protesting something as a TRA?

Wasn't it the current education secretary, Nadim Zahawi? He was attacked when he came to give a speech at his uni.

Tallisker · 29/06/2022 13:27

The son was part of the attack, IIRC

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 29/06/2022 13:30

Doesn't any candidate for leader need to be a member of the parliamentary Labour party; that is, they must be an MP already?

That's Andy Burnham out.

achillestoes · 29/06/2022 13:36

Yes, it was Cooper Jr.

Zahawi was very nice to him.

FOJN · 29/06/2022 13:38

TBH they could elect Germaine Greer as leader and I still wouldn't trust them on women's rights.

NinaManiana · 29/06/2022 13:43

I like jess phillips and think she would do well on the popular vote. That’s the battleground, like it or not, bojo won because he’s a populist leader.

NOT angela rayner. No way would she get the vote of middle england and she’s too associated with corbyn to be populist.

i still reckon starmer could do a good job if he got himself out there a bit more, came across as a bit less wooden. His super clever being genuinely good for the job thing unfortunately doesn’t work well in the social media age, he needs a better PR firm

user1497787065 · 29/06/2022 13:55

I'm a Tory voter (not enamoured by the current bunch) and seriously impressed by Wes Streeting.

I'm in an area where the vote is divided between Tory and Lib Dem so an opportunity for a serious labour candidate is unlikely.

Floisme · 29/06/2022 14:35

I've not being a party member for a while so my opinion doesn't really count but I'd settle for anyone with a functioning spine who wasn't an idiot. I'm not sure who would qualify these days.

WhereYouLeftIt · 29/06/2022 15:18

Cooper's son has led to her 'not going down that rabbit hole' so she can fuck off for her cowardice. (Which is a shame, she is experienced and Labour badly needs experienced people.)

Streeting is tainted with Madigan.

Rayner is presumably still keeping the bench warm for Madigan.

Nandy wants the most oppressed of all rapists to be in women's prisons, presumably so they can practice shooting fish in a barrel. <boak>

Lammy considers women to be dinosaurs, hoarding their rights.

Dodds made a pigs ear of it when asked what a woman is, bleating about needing 'context'.

Thornberry had a smug smile on her face as she said that some women have penises.

Phillips misrepresented the 'spousal veto' despite being involved in its creation (it's not a veto, Jess).

The only member of the shadow Cabinet that I can muster any respect for is Jonathan Ashworth. But even then, he could be TWAW just kept his mouth shut.

Rosie Duffield is the only one I feel I can trust, as she has spoken openly (and paid a very high price for doing so.)

MrsOvertonsWindow · 29/06/2022 15:51

I don't care. I'd settle for anyone who is confident to stand up to science denying fantasists. Because a politician who is stupid / ignorant enough follow the demands of those insisting that lies are the truth will never have the moral courage / integrity to deal with the warmongers of the world or the organised crime / fraudsters who make a living out of deceiving people.

dropthevipers · 29/06/2022 15:57

Hardly matter either way. The talent pool (sic) on the front benches are all fruitcakes, nutjobs and tin foil hatters. Labour remain fucked for the forseeable.
