Allow the flying of Suffrage flag as a symbol of women's equality
Since its introduction in 1908, the Suffrage flag of the Women's Social and Political Union has attained iconic status as a symbol of women's equality. Catalogued under WOA T52 of the Parliamentary Collection, it deserves the same legal recognition granted to e.g. the Rainbow and NHS flags.

What legal recognition does the Pride flag have? (I googled but couldn’t find anything apart from some comments on copyright.)

Why do flags need to have legal recognition before they can be flown? Is that really a thing, or can the owners of a building with a flagpole fly any flag so long as it’s not celebrating hate groups (so a flag with the swastika would not be acceptable)?

I agree that it would be great to see the suffragette colours streaming out from buildings all over the country, but I’d like to better understand the precise purpose of the petition before signing. If all that’s stopping it happening now is building occupants choosing not to, then I don’t see how this petition will change that.

I am probably on my own but I think this is a terrible idea. I'd rather they stopped flying any political flags of any stripe including the NHS one. Just keep it to nation flags, county flags and such like for high days and holidays.

We're in this mess because of virtue signalling. Just because I agree with the flag's politics this time does not mean I think it should be flown. I think people should be able to walk about with out seeing any of this. I don't want to look out of my window and see the rainbow flag (because it does not mean what it once did) and though I disagree deeply with them I would sympathize with anyone who was a gender theory type who does not want to open his or her bedroom curtains to see a flag like the suffragette one that I might agree with flying on a building.

Let's keep political discourse to books, meetings, voting, newspapers where it is possible to be nuanced. And take it off the side of supermarket delivery vans, town halls, zebra crossings and corporate twitter feeds!

That’s a good point.

Hard agree! And I’ve argued this at work but people choose not to get the point. I would actually love to see lots of other groups ask for their flags to be flown at various points of the year so management can understand my argument

I'm personally not a fan of flags. I think apart from a country's flag, there's really no need to have any other kind up. Public institutions and organisations should be neutral in their stances and focus on following the law rather than making overt but empty gestures by selectively flying flags.

However, the reason I signed the petition is that for me it is a dare / challenge to government - given the way the rainbow flags are put up everywhere, there's a valid question about why other kinds of flags are not given the same unthinking allegiance. Why shouldn't the suffrage flag be flown given its historical significance to British society? Not even for one day of the year? I'm pretty sure the petition will be turned down assuming it gets the numbers, but it would be interesting to see them squirming and the reasons given for it.

Further info: I've just looked up the details on this. British bureaucracy can be adorable at times. I like the clear but tedious specifications. And the question still stands why the rainbow flag is listed as having deemed consent and not any other type that would give people a sense of "civic pride" such as the suffrage flag.

It looks like the new flags used in that weird 1930s style display might have breached planning consent.

I think formal complaints can be sent to the council via the online reporting form on the planning section of its website.
There's a link for Planning Breach but it didn't seem to display properly on my phone.

Signed! Can we have a suffragette week where all the retailers fly our colours and have suffragettes saying how much they love everything fro trainers to gardening equipment?!
and why is a man in a dress going to persuade me to buy a trowel? Looking at you, Dobbies.

Tbh I agree. I don't want more flags that organisations/people feel obligated to pay lip service to even if it's one I particularly like.
