A 2 year old shows signs of puberty after being exposed to his dad's testosterone gel

A mum is campaigning to raise awareness about the risk to children of testosterone gel. Her 2 year old son's height and weight were off the charts, he had a sizeable penis and pubic hair . The father was using the gel for a testicular condition.

Didnt the mother start a thread about that on here and she got a bit of a pasting?

There was definitely a thread. I think she was angry with her DH.

Sexnotgender · 16/06/2022 12:50

I remember a thread on it too.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 16/06/2022 12:54

Whilst I think it’s great she’s campaigning for more prominent warnings I really do think the child should have been kept anonymous. I don’t see any benefit in telling the world his medical problems. The dad is a fucking idiot though. It’s really obvious any gel/cream that’s designed to be absorbed by the skin could transfer.

I really hope the boy makes a full recovery.

maddiemookins16mum · 16/06/2022 13:04

Fgs, why on earth name and show the child, in 10 years his mates can be reading all about it on tinternet.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 16/06/2022 13:08

Agree, there's no need to take away the child's privacy like that. That's not ok.

miri1985 · 16/06/2022 13:08

Friend of mines DH was prescribed testosterone gel and all the warnings they were given at the time made him ask for an alternative testosterone method, everything from being careful about too much contact to having to wash the clothes of the person on the gel in a separate wash so that others don't absorb it through their clothes

MumbleAlwaysMumble · 16/06/2022 13:20

I don’t want to say but you have a clear warning on bottle/packaging if you are using oestrogen gel for HRT.

The fact it can be transferred is very clearly mentioned as well as the fact it could be an issue for your partner. And of course a child….

Im surprised this isn’t clearly announced on the testosterone gel bottles tbh.

Soubriquet · 16/06/2022 13:22

I remember the post too

People weren’t impressed she was angry with his dh because it was an accident.

The child had to suffer because she couldn’t be angry with him

NotBadConsidering · 16/06/2022 13:24

This is well known in the medical literature, there are multiple published case studies of children affected this way. Two quick examples:

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28070908/

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16025298/

If the dad was prescribed the testosterone and didn’t acquire it from a dodgy source, then he should have been counselled about this risk, his doctors should have known about it and would be negligent if they didn’t. There’s no need for a campaign for labelling, there should be a campaign for responsible prescribing.

But this isn’t really relevant to sex and gender discussions because most transmen get testosterone via injection as it gives better dosing.

Ducksinthebath · 16/06/2022 13:45

Absolutely shocking that the child has been named, and with such an unusually name too. Lovely for him to have every futures friend, enemy, partner and employer fully appraised of size of the toddler member.

lborgia · 16/06/2022 13:48

I use this gel myself, and it's also covered in warnings about washing your hands, keeping it away from everyone else etc etc. I even keep it away from my husband!!

That poor child.

RudsyFarmer · 16/06/2022 13:51

Isn’t there also studies about the amount of oestrogen in drinking water? It’s quite scary the amount of hormones were ingesting from water, dairy products on top of HRT etc.

Charlavail · 16/06/2022 14:06

If I remember correctly people were a bit 🤔about the thread on here about it.

How exactly was her misplaced anger protecting or helping the child?

LAHallucinations · 16/06/2022 14:54

What was the mother thinking sharing intimate details of her child's medical condition alongside his photos and very Google-able name? Having his peers and future employers reading about his pubic hair and 'massive sustained erections' will, I imagine, do the poor boy greater long lasting harm than the testosterone gel.

Kona84 · 16/06/2022 14:59

I wonder if it’s had any affect on her testosterone levels too

pantsforteaagain · 16/06/2022 15:15

Notbadconsidering

It is relevant to this thread given the news stories about transmen managing to "chest" feed. I think they have to come off testosterone injections to be able to do it, but will have lots of testosterone still swishing around in their bodies.
Elaine Miller (Gusset Gripper) does a really good talk about it at the Alloa women event and it is on youtube (I[m going to try to link it but I have not done this before). It is heartbreaking.

Quite. This poor, poor child.

LizziesTwin · 16/06/2022 15:40

You can have the internet wiped, I know of a young adult who was featured heavily in the newspapers and a whole family who are now invisible.

Yes but he’s probably not going to know it’s an issue until it’s too late. By that time there could be countless imprints of his name, image and circumstances all over the web making not difficult to ensure original content is removed and search results modified to ensure he isn’t included.

Yes. I found the thread completely suspicious but MN checked it out apparently & it was above board. I found the OP's approach & reaction bewildering.

MadamOracle · 16/06/2022 16:34

I still don’t get why it took so long to connect precocious puberty to the testosterone gel.

And yes, poor child. There was no need to name him, let alone share very private medical details.

DeaconBoo · 16/06/2022 16:45

Wow!! Shocked that no-one realised this. (And agree the people should've been kept anonymous).
I deliberately didn't put a certain type of medicated cream on my arms when I had a baby/toddler because they were always gumming my flesh. So, for precisely this reason. They should've been clearly warned, but it seems blindingly obvious to me!

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 16/06/2022 17:44

You can have the internet wiped

You really, really can't. With a great deal of trouble and time you can remove a superficial layer, but you can never wipe everything.
