Advert for razors shows topless NB model with mastectomy scars

This isn't a cancer survivor but a trans / non-binary model. I'm all for positive representation in advertising from the LGBTQ community but this one feels irresponsible.

In particular advertising 'super sharp razor blades' using a model with visible scars. Some might view them as self-harm scars.

We seem to be normalising double mastectomies, or turning it into a fashion statement.

No need to shave face as biological female.

If they are taking testosterone, they may well grow facial hair.

Also increased and thicker body hair.

I don’t take testosterone, am a biological woman, and still grow a lot of facial hair. It’s really unhelpful when people make those types of blanket statements like ‘no need to shave facial hair as a woman.’ Women also grow facial hair. Whether because they have darker hair so it shows more, maybe they have a condition like PCOS that causes excessive hair growth, maybe it’s just how they are. But plenty of women grow/remove facial hair.

Oh I know, I have the random wiry chin hairs to prove it.

They don’t lodge complaints or froth at the mouth if a model has fake breasts.

I can't say that I've ever noticed anyone with visible scarring from breast enlargement being used to advertise razors. Did you have an example in mind?

That’s your problem…the fact the model has scars? what’s wrong with having scars?

SapphosRock · 13/06/2022 15:39

what’s wrong with having scars?

It's glamorising self-harm, particularly the reference to super sharp razor blades. Most people who have self-harmed or knows someone who has will immediately think of cutting.

I just cancelled, and told them why.

I don’t see how it is glamourising self harm because self harm is harm done by yourself to yourself. It’s not scars left behind due to surgery or pregnancy.

CrossStichQueen · 13/06/2022 16:19

Many people believe cutting off healthy body parts is a form of self harm.

An elective double mastectomy of healthy breasts is an act of self-harm. As is starving yourself. As is drinking to excess.

Anorexic models shouldn't be used to advertise diet pills.

Alcoholic models shouldn't be used to advertise alcohol.

Self-harming models shouldn't be used to advertise razor blades.

Aside from the obvious scars, there is this visible scar.

The model looks like they have cutting scars visible on the lower arms.

Advertising razor blades with visible self harm scars = “edgy” I guess but also fucking irresponsible.

Double mastectomies as a fashion accessory for young women - so progressive!

Jesus Christ, what is going to become of these girls in 20 years time?

It's heartbreaking. But delightful for men who hate women.
