does anyone know of any UK university where prospective students have to sign a waiver accepting that they might hear (either in class or from invited speakers) views which are legal and any cuntitude on their part will lead to severe outcomes for them? Just an idea.

No idea but thank you for introducing the word cuntitude into my lexicon.

Scrolled down to say the same thing!

Cuntitude....love it.
Not heard of any universities that haven't been "captured" but pretty sure I've read that there is going to be a crackdown on this behaviour (Cuntitude) 🤣🤣😍

Fairislefandango · 12/06/2022 17:42

No, but it's a great idea! Cuntitude Grin

Plasmodesmata · 12/06/2022 17:51

Unlikely. It would be terribly unpopular with those students who don't want to hear things they don't like.

It's tricky though, isn't it. My first born is currently year 12 and picking universities, there's enough to worry about without thinking about all this too. Are there any UK unis that have managed to stand up to the deplatforming attempts in any way?

NecessaryScene · 12/06/2022 17:53

It would be terribly unpopular with those students who don't want to hear things they don't like.

But it would be terribly popular with all the other students who think those students are cunts.

My guess is that the number of shouty types is actually very small and I am also sure that a great many more just keep their heads down to avoid the flak, but would actually rather these nutters were told to grow up and fuck off. And stay fucked off.

Jo Phoenix is speaking well of Reading, where she has moved to following her dreadful experience with the OU. It would be great to hear of other good experiences.

University of Reading gave a posting to Professor Jo Phoenix when she was bullied out of the Open University by colleagues. They did this even though she is taking legal action against the OU.

I agree. I think they make a lot of noise, but are probably fewer than they think there are. But, normal students (those there to study, and get pissed/dance on the weekends) watching from the sidelines lack the confidence to tell them they're not interested in joining in with their cuntitude* - risk of cancellation is still too high. If those students knew that the university would reign the others in, they could just get on with their lives without having to walk on eggshells.

*We need to get this word trending and accepted into the Oxford English Dictionary!

It seems unlikely. But it would be a good thing. Perhaps they will have to bring something similar in once the new legislation on academic freedom has been passed. The government is trying to change that culture from above but it really has to come from the ground up. I think universities also need 'no no platforming' policies that say 'if you ask us to withdraw a speaking invitation for anything short of criminal conduct, we will say no'.

Professor Rosa Freedman had a grim time at Reading a few years back, unfortunately. I'd be glad to learn she's had plenty of support from senior management.

I have every digit crossed that UCL is holding firm here for the most part. Professor Sophie Scott is a trouper.

Prof Sophie Scott CBE is admirable as an academic, a podcaster, a University Challenge individual scorer, and all round good egg.

I was so thrilled when she was awarded the Faraday Prize.

Feckedupbundle · 12/06/2022 20:31

I do like cuntitude, thank you for adding that to the lexicon.
Dd1 has just finished her first year at Nottingham and has reported no nonsense from there. She is doing Zoology though, which probably doesn't attract science deniers. I hear the vet school at Sutton Bonington is sensible as well. I can't comment on Nottingham Trent as I don't know anyone currently there.

FemaleAndLearning · 13/06/2022 00:30

It's in the urban dictionary (I had to look it up). I don't even like the first bit of the word so don't think I'll be able to use it.

I think this might actually be a significant number.

My university used to be an excellent small liberal arts institution. It has now embraced being utterly beholden to all the modern agendas to the point that in many ways the teaching approach is precisely the opposite of what it used to be. I know a few of the older faculty, they hate it and are just waiting to retire. The younger ones who are any good move on quickly.

The Board of Governors made this choice totally deliberately thinking it was the way to attract students. Which is now very competitive, most universities here are struggling with numbers. They have been on this path for about five years and guess what, enrollment keeps dropping.

I think the really serious students would flock to something that resisted the push in this direction, it would give them a real edge over the other uiversities who all see wokeness as the way to prevail financially.

PermanentTemporary · 14/06/2022 11:10

Someone in my GC WhatsApp group works at UCL too.

There are some universities who have hosted Womens Place meetings - Oxford is one, and Prof Selina Scott is employed there. But then it was Oxford students who created the environment whereby she was advised to have bodyguards when lecturing.

I think like most things it is probably variable with the course/head of department.

They'd literally die.

We just had a placement who threatened to report us to her university because a member of the cafe team was slightly grumpy with her (very noisy, busy cafe and the staff member concerned was both ill and bereaved... yes, she probably shouldn't have been working, but that's another story). I kid you not.

If she'd have been my placement the only person calling the uni would have been me. To send the little madam right back. I'm still really angry about how it was all handled. Yes, my colleagues should have explained better to her, that it wasn't personal BUT we are doing the students a favour, not the other way round!

Entitled and elitist.

No Kat, you don't understand. Let me educate you. The students are doing you a favour by bringing enlightenment to your workplace.

Flowers to your bereaved colleague who the little dickhead compained about.
