FYI mountaineering metaphors

NZdad · 09/06/2022 11:59

I saw a rumour on Mumsnet last week about how mountaineering metaphors were not allowed. But no confirmation / explanation.

Well, I just got both when mumsnet deleted my thread about the NYTimes article on gender-neutral language in maternity settings etc.

I'm not fussed, mumsnet has the right to do what it likes of course.

I am confused though, I can't see how this language is problematic, I think it's widespread & applied to many issues, all the way back to "p**k oil" etc. Maybe someone can explain it to me?

Hi.

We're just getting in touch to let you know that we've deleted your thread here because we felt this section broke our talk guidelines:

"Has the NY Times p**ked? "

In this context, we consider the word, 'p**ked' not especially conducive to civil debate.

We know you'll be disappointed with our decision, but while we want to allow everyone to express their opinions on this issue, it's important that the debate remains civil and constructive. Feel free to repost whilst staying within the terms of our Talk guidelines.

Best wishes
MNHQ

Sorry about the font, I copy-pasted from the email I got! There's no edit button, I guess I just get to look like a crazy person.

And the bolds come from trying to use a double-asterisk to replace "ea" in the P-word. An edit button would be nice!

Phew - until that explanation it was either Crazy Chap or Angry Kiwi.

Boxowine · 10/06/2022 00:32

Time to employ Cockney slang?
P**k = beak= chicken= chick? No, won't do.

P**k = leek = cock a leekie = cock? No, that won't do either.

@YetAnotherSpartacus" I have 'Climb Every Mountain' from the Sound of Music as an ear worm now."

LOL! You and me both! What absolute madness!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/06/2022 09:01

Maybe we could go for Kate Bush “running up that hill” instead:)

IcakethereforeIam · 10/06/2022 10:06

Oh no! the giant font has gone, now I just look like an idiot Blush.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/06/2022 10:43

Bring back the big font

respectmysex · 10/06/2022 20:58

Whilst I loved the big font too, I'm still wondering where @mnhq are? Can we have a list or what?

ErrolTheDragon · 10/06/2022 22:52

Unless anyone has reported this thread to them, MNHQ probably won't even know it exists- doing @mnhq doesn't contact them, and afaik the only topic they proactively check is Site Stuff.

DeaconBoo · 10/06/2022 23:25

Anyone remember when the word 'guise' got someone deleted? (And no, they weren't mis-spelling a group of guys)

I’ve been modded a couple of times for saying ‘stnnng and brv’. ‘Sensational and courageous’ seems to be ok.

Given the context I’m not sure I’d get away with ‘spunky’.

really omg

I think it's unfair on first time posters. I've seen newcomers to this forum get deleted in one of their first ever posts, so many times. How can you be punished for a rule that you can only find out about through either infringing it, or being sent a PM?

I've seen this too. It happened to me under another username when I first joined MN. It didn't take long for me to work out why it had happened. I had quite an interesting email exchange with MNHQ trying to find out why certain posts had been deleted. It took them about 3 goes to find something in the guidelines they could "plausibly" apply to my posts. It was a great education in how authoritarian this movement is.

Long term posters with a strong, consistent message get targeted too. I can remember the gloating on Twitter when LangCleg was banned. I wonder why someone with safeguarding expertise was considered a threat?

And still, despite the bordering on Kafka-esque restrictions, we rise.

And academics like Sarah Pedersen identify us as subaltern counterpublics.

And an NYT opinion writer gives an honourable mention to FWR Mumsnet (in a Twitter discussion).

www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/4512657-The-answer-Is-Mumsnet-I-believe

And Jean Hatchet reminds us of what we're fighting for (relates to protests at a Standing for Women event in Manchester, 2018, iirc).

Woman last night : “really it’s a shame you all have to waste your time on the trans issue when there’s so much to do in feminism”

No. There isn’t. All the rest depends on this. If men can say they are women and women have to believe them - they killed feminism. It’s over.

When men take the word “woman” from women and use it for themselves it is the most aggressive collective act of male violence against women and girls you will see in your lifetime.

These men know .... oh yes they know... that if we can’t define “woman” ... we can’t name our oppressors “male”. We can’t fight them. We can’t overthrow them.

Let this pass and it’s over women. The whole game is up.

Fight now. For feminism and for your lives as women.

It's worth reading the full thread and exchanges with commenters.

Understanding the moderation of FWR can be challenging for newbies and old timers alike.

We’ve been told in the past that FWR is not actively moderated. But on one recent thread, a post was deleted within three minutes. That suggests otherwise, possibly after being ‘monitored’ by those outside MNHQ.

It is useful to know (as some posters may not) that MNHQ moderators are also allowed to post under their own, personal usernames to engage with threads. But they must post their moderation comments under their moderator user names.

I suspect that the inconsistent monitoring might be a reflection of MNHQ itself. I think it is probably a lot like many companies at the moment - a mix of TRAs, GCs and mostly just people trying not to put their head above the parapet. I always remember that the intern, Emma Healey, who leaked private data of Mumsnetters on twitter, also tweeted that she still had lots of friends inside MumsNet that shared her views. I don’t think she was lying about that.

Rightsraptor · 13/06/2022 07:57

Jean H was so right, @EmbarrassingHadrosaurus . Now they've taken the word female too. I have no idea where we can go from here.

Hagiography · 13/06/2022 09:06

We don't concede any words, that's where we go. The word 'woman' has a clear and definite meaning, and no male can be a woman.
