Also good news about fewer smears being needed:

'Women can safely have fewer smears thanks to HPV test'

Still plenty of 'people' where the word should have been 'women' in that article. I haven't counted, but it felt like there where more 'people' than 'women'.

JellySaurus · 01/06/2022 09:44

OK, I've reread it (originally read it a few hours ago) and there are more 'women' than 'people' but it's still full of ridiculous pandering to avoid centring women in an article about women's health.

It's a start.

Yes, and the word 'women' was used in the headline, which I think is quite important.

Not only are they saying women but the BBC has done a reasonable and fair report/interview with Lia Thompson 😱
Has something happened at the BBC.

I think the article was fine, it was clearly about women, and they also at the end mention those with a cervix. Which is important as those women who believe themselves to be transgender need to be included. Also the study was done on women. So sticking with the science, biological reality. All good.

The bar is really low when we are pleased that the state-founded news station is using a correct word for once. The BBC needs to be better! Do better! Stop helping nasty men being abusive to women!"

puffyisgood · 05/06/2022 21:01

yeah, I think it's totally fine, sensible even, for them to add the bit about, "...and people with a cervix", provided that:

(1) they actually use the w-word, which they do; and
(2) the w-word is given a lot of prominence, which it is here.
