You couldn't make it up.
Oh he doesn't have to!

Comedy - he is funny, but not all the time. A fair bit is pretty unfunny and or (from where I'm say) pointlessly crass.

I disagree. I think his sitcoms are superb (except the office) but have always found his stand up a bit weak; I thought this was his funniest one.

It is very, very crass though.

purpleme12 · 28/05/2022 01:18

I haven't watched his stand up but I really loved this clip. 🤣

Needmoresleep · 28/05/2022 19:13

One reason I watched was to help viewing figures.

As we know, women are consumers yet so many businesses seem to think it is OK to ignore our concerns, even our existence.

Ricky talks about some of the lunacy.

Over the past few years this would have been enough to have got him cancelled. However streaming companies are in trouble, and are belatedly realising ‘go woke go broke’. So Netflix’ CEO tells unhappy employees that if they don’t like some of the content (Dave Chapelle) perhaps Netflix is not the right place for them. Ditto the word is that the new CEO at Warners is keen to discuss new projects with JKR. Sensible given that she makes far more money for them than Emma Watson and pals.

Most people, even in America, don’t understand this gender stuff. Most people don’t have a problem with trans and non binary people. It’s the stuff that goes with it. The having to watch your speech, hide your views, be careful of your pronouns. As well as clear concerns around medicalisation, sport and safeguarding. The sooner Netflix et al accept, even promote alternative views such as those expressed by JRK and Gervais, the better.

Luxa · 28/05/2022 20:42

See how when a man says something gender critical, he isn't immediately threatened, bullied, cancelled or sacked. When a woman speaks up though... we know what happens.

Tell that to Graham Lineham! No Father Ted musical thanks to his openly GC views

Needmoresleep · 28/05/2022 21:48

The theatre is also suffering, in the same way that streaming services are. Oversea tourists are not back in anything the numbers they were.

Father Ted would seem like the perfect show to attract domestic audiences to the West End, and then tour. Perhaps like Netflix and Warners they will start coming round and realising that some of the PC stuff on in the West End is not entertaining, interesting or profitable.

Could we all become theatrical angels. Each own a share in the production in exchange for some of the profits. And obviously a big MN exclusive first night.

He didn't say anything clever or funny. In fact, he only said what any Daily Mail reading farty at the pub, who you'd ordinarily avoid like the plague, would say. But, hey, he said stuff that vindicated GC women, who so desperately need to believe that they're the ones being victimised, despite all the evidence, rather than transwomen.

What is it - 80 natal women to every 1 transwoman? Whatever. But Ricky knows that it only takes one person, equipped with a penis and testicles (or even who once had a penis and testicles), to destroy, utterly, the morale of all the women around her, and cause them to weep softly into their handkerchiefs. Well done Ricky, for truly grasping how delicate, delightful, fragrant and fragile all natal women truly are! :)

No, he said exactly what trans activists say.

@Ides Two genuine questions:

  1. Why do you think he meant the trans jokes but not the pedophilia jokes, the fat jokes or all the other much more offensive (if they were his views) jokes he made?
  1. What was it you think he said that was typical of the daily mail? That first section seems to be literally what Stonewall, TELI etc say.
BettyFilous · 29/05/2022 07:42

The furore prompted me and DH to watch Ricky Gervais’ new show on Netflix last night, never having watched his standup stuff before. We both agreed this morning that it had made us reappraise Ricky, for the better. He made some good points. DH picked up on the skit about being cancelled because of 10 year old tweets and the point that what offends changes over time. He gets it.

Ricky, if you ever read this (I strongly suspect Jane might walk among us), I’d buy you a pint.

Ides · 01/06/2022 22:01

Ricky's just great! He gets it ... he totally understands that a person in possession of a penis and testicles is always able to oppress all the women around him. He totally understands just how fragrant and delicate all we natal women are! :) He is a poet and an intellectual giant ... and absolutely a feminist, for understanding just how weak, delicate but delightful we are next to anyone born with a penis and testicles. Darling, darling, Ricky! :) My only criticism is that he doesn't wear lip-gloss like Jo Rowling.

doublemonkey · 01/06/2022 22:08

Ricky's on Mumsnet for sure.

Cheers Ricky! 👋🏻

Do you ever make a post on this board that doesn't include "penis and testicles"?

MagnoliaTaint · 01/06/2022 22:26

it only takes one person, equipped with a penis and testicles (or even who once had a penis and testicles), to destroy, utterly, the morale of all the women around

You probably don't realise how true this can be.

Yep.

  1. Whatever he meant, the trans jokes weren't clever or sharp in any way. They really were as brainless as anything I'd expect to hear from any drunken numbnut down at the pub. Whatever he meant re other jokes isn't relevant and I simply don't care about them. I'm not going to watch his tedious routine to find out, either.
  2. Regardless of Stonewall or any other group, that is the standard opinion of the Mail, reflected in Gervais's humour. I think you need to accept it, however awkward it is for you: the GC view meshes nicely with the standard Daily Mail view. You can either accept that the Mail has suddenly become right on and supportive of the underdog on this one, lone, issue, or you can masticate upon the fact that you're on the side of the powerful and the oppressor, as indeed the Mail has been since its inception. Just as it was on the side of the Nazis in the 1930s. In other words: natal women oppress transwomen, not vice versa, despite the fact that transwomen possess (or once possessed) the supreme godly power of testicles and penises between their legs.
  3. I hope that helps. :)
Datun · 02/06/2022 01:09

Whatever he meant, the trans jokes weren't clever or sharp in any way.

what jokes? He literally repeated exactly what TRAs say. The humour is all theirs.

OldCrone · 02/06/2022 04:23

In other words: natal women oppress transwomen, not vice versa

What do you mean by this? Can you give some examples of how women oppress transwomen?

Pocodaku · 02/06/2022 04:52

@Ides, why don’t you go read up on what natal women with publicly GC views have had to face from transactivists.

Gervais is literally quoting from the TRA handbook, not making up anything.

TRAs even go after trans people who don’t hold the “correct” views about biological sex being a construct.

Violent male sex offenders, rapists and murderers are moved into women’s prisons by merely claiming that they are now trans, therefore women.

Do you honestly think death and rape threats, doxxing, surrounding and physically threatening feminists holding meetings, hounding academics out of jobs for saying sex matters, holding workshops to coerce lesbians into sleeping with transwomen with full male genitalia (“the cotton ceiling”), calling lesbians who won’t sleep with male-bodied people “sexual racists” and fascists, etc etc, are harmless?

And, look up how many natal women are killed and raped by male-bodied people before you trot out your tired clichés.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 02/06/2022 08:16

You probably don't realise how true this can be.

Oh I think they do.

MagnoliaTaint · 02/06/2022 10:58
