The daily mail. Grear source. The daily mail. Grear source.

@stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou

Are you saying we shouldn't discuss the views of a towering figure in UK gay rights like Simon Fanshawe because his piece was published in the Daily Mail?

If not, what do you mean please?

I mean that I wouldn't touch the daily mail with the proverbial.

Personally I generally have little tolerance for the Daily Mail hate on this site. When it comes to discussing women's rights the DM has been the absolute leader out of all the papers. It will publish things and say things that others are too frightened to. The DM obviously has flaws, like any newspaper, but at least they are firm on the subject and their approach.

I am staggered by this.

The paper who hounded a woman to her death, told a young, pregnant, very mentally ill woman in the public eye wiht an abusive partner that they were going to run a story that wasn't true to the point she had a breakdown, who posts photos of women in outfits and ridicules them, who literally makes up stories about womens' relationships and tells the world they've been cheated on, who pictures young women coming out of the shops without make up and ridicules them...I could go on, and on, and on.

Fairislefandango · 14/05/2022 22:05

Things don't become untrue or irrelevant just because they are published in a newspaper you don't like. I am not a DM reader, but a lot of people are. I am glad this message is getting to a lot of people.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 14/05/2022 22:11

I'm staggered that all those posters frothing about the DM don't ask themselves why the Guardian and other similar publications don't cover these issues ?

Peregrina · 14/05/2022 22:50

The Guardian doesn't publish them because they have well and truly drunk the TWAW Kool-Aid. They make complete fools of themselves in the process but not before they have chased out some decent journalists who are not as stupid as they.

FemaleAndLearning · 14/05/2022 22:55

Another thread being derailed by the sources we read and view!
Simon Fanshawe must be gutted that what he fought for has turned out like this. I have no respect for Stonewall when they define homosexuality as same gendered. The clue is in the word. Hopefully the LGB Alliance can go from strength to strength and those who want a charity that focuses on LGB can grow. And before anyone says anything Battersea Dogs home is a charity for dogs and the cats protection is a charity for cats. It is perfectly legitimate to have charities serving different and distinct people.

I mean that I wouldn't touch the daily mail with the proverbial.

That's fine but not really relevant to the content.

He's not been on the board of Stonewall since 1994. Its about time he stopped living off what was less than 8 years of involvement a long time ago.

Yeah, not like he's achieved much eh? Still we can't all live up to your achievements, random internet person.

Ironically the housing association is a director of is listed, by Glinner, as a Stonewall Diversity Champion as well.

I don't think that word means what you think it means, it's actually quite common for people to base their opinions on direct experience.

But it is.

Its done so much to hurt women. Why would we give it airtime?

LeftFootForward · 15/05/2022 10:14

@stopwaitingforpermissiontobeyou
The Daily Mail is the newspaper with the second largest circulation in the UK and a very, very popular webpage.

Irrespective of my personal politics if I wanted to get my message out there, I'd get my face in the Daily Mail for that very reason.

The fact that it often appears in MN threads just goes to show how what is printed in the DM gets airtime.

The politics of the newspaper doesn't make the story any less interesting and IMO unless you're a purist who believes its okay to 'lose the election but win the argument' then the Daily Mail is a good place to get your message out to lots of people.

LeftFootForward · 15/05/2022 10:19

And to reiterate what I said upthread and get this thread back on track, I completely agree with Simon Fanshawe. Stonewall fought for gay rights for years in a respectful, inclusive way and I applaud him.
In a very short space of time all that has been wrecked by trans activists which is a tragedy.

MagnoliaTaint · 15/05/2022 10:58

I would far rather give 'airtime' to Simon Fanshawe, with his long and estimable history, than some internet random who is determined to derail threads by attacking the messenger.

To get back to the thread's subject, I am looking forward to hearing Stonewall give evidence in Allison Bailey's trial next week. I wonder if there's a chance they can row back, or if they really have become moribund.

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 15/05/2022 11:05

Why would we give it airtime?

who's this 'we'?

I never said you were in my team, chum

I'm so pleased that Simon Fanshawe is honest and clear sighted enough to recognise and speak the truth. it's so sad though. the next step is to figure out how it happened to prevent it happening again

MrsOvertonsWindow · 15/05/2022 11:14

Simon Fanshawe has so much integrity. It's a relief to see that the mainstream press are publishing his writing - just as it's a pleasure to see writers like Julie Bindel, Suzanne Moore, Helen Lewis etc being published in the Telegraph and the Spectator.
It means that women's voices are being heard everywhere - as they should be.
