Respect my Sex - Mayor of Watford

Hi All
With the up coming local elections I wanted to get an idea of the candidates views on women's rights. In Watford we have an elected mayor, the position has been held by 2 people since it was created 20 years ago, both LibDems.

To get an idea of the candidates' stances I sent the following message to all 3 (as well as the local council candidates who haven't replied).

Dear Candidate

I live in xxx Ward and currently find myself politically homeless, having recently given birth to a baby girl I have come to realise the importance of women’s hard won rights and protections and the reasons they are needed. You may have seen the campaign ‘Respect my Sex if you want my ‘X’’, in which women all over the country are talking to local election candidates about women’s sex-based rights and single-sex spaces and services.

Sex is a protected characteristic in the Equality Act. Women’s single-sex spaces and services matter for the dignity, privacy, and safety of women.

Yet some local authorities, have begun prioritising the concept of self-identified ‘gender’ over sex. This filters down into Council policies with an impact on the provision of women’s single-sex spaces and services – for example public toilets and park facilities. Clarity about sex also matters for sports – girls and women need single-sex competitions to guarantee fair and safe competition. Clarity about sex matters for safeguarding children. Some schools have removed single-sex toilets and local authorities have endorsed materials which suggest that what makes a child a boy or a girl is whether they fit into masculine or feminine stereotypes.

I’m interested to know where you would stand on these issues and would be grateful if you would let me know how you would answer the following questions:

Can you tell me what a woman is?
Do you understand that the Equality Act 2010 allows for single-sex services and sports?
If elected, would you work to ensure that our local authority:
retains the concept of sex where it matters in language, communications, data collection, and policy development;
protects women’s single-sex spaces and services, both in direct provision, and where you have regulatory / partnership influence;
prioritises safeguarding the vulnerable, especially children, in the provision of all spaces and services where sex matters?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks

My Name

I have heard back from all 3 and will post the replies in the order I received them.

Thanks Magenta82. I tend to agree, I'm not happy voting for Labour, Green or especially Lib Dems at this point due to their stance.

The Tory was the best response on this issue, but the Labour was also acceptable. Wouldn't vote for Lib Dem at all. For me, personally, I would vote Labour for the other issues and feel happy that they were on the right page as regards sex and gender, so I guess it depends how you feel about other issues.

Re this and the other poster who mentioned that GC Labour are the business - have I missed a memo? - are Labour actually starting to get the issue? I knew a few eg Rosie Duffield got it, but I thought overall the party's position was still in thrall to the Stonewall dogma?

If Labour actually do start pushing out GC policies then great, that would actually solve my politically homeless stance. My mum has told me I need to 'get over' my issues with Labour on this as not voting for them will just prolong the Tories being in power which I don't want overall as a slightly left of centre woman and have never voted Tory in my life but I can't deny they are the best and clearest on this matter.

This is such an interesting thread. I'm a lifelong Lib Dem voter but doubt I'll ever vote for them again. Even if they saw sense tomorrow and vowed to defend women's rights, the damage has been done.

I don't believe that the Conservatives are particularly interested in women's rights but it's extraordinary how the other parties have allowed the Tories to pick up votes from women who have been abandoned over this issue.

There are no local elections in my area today. Just as well as I have absolutely no idea who I'd vote for.

Well I wrote to my local candidates using an adapted version of the OP. Only Labour replied. With this:

Hi Xxxx Thanks for your email ,some serious questions there,to be honest I’m afraid it’s not really my area of expertise but the Labour Group is committed to making sure that all voices in our Community are heard and fairly represented and we would be very pleased if you would like to come along to our Big Listening Campaign in the Summer (date and location to be announced ) to discuss these issues with us.

At least he replied I guess. Confused

Ah. The old I’m keen to listen; let’s kick that into the long grass/invite you to a fig leaf event strategy

FemaleAndLearning · 05/05/2022 17:16

Good god that response is appalling. Not my area of expertise! So women won't figure in that candidate's priorities.

CandyLeBonBon · 05/05/2022 19:56

Yep. That was exactly my reaction @FemaleAndLearning and @SoggyPaper

I wrote back

Thankyou at least for answering, which is more than my other two candidates did.

You’re right, they ARE important questions. And worthy of your attention. These matters affect your wife/daughters/sisters/aunts. They are vital to the health and wellbeing of 50% of the electorate and should not be dismissed so casually. I look forward to you and the Labour group taking it on board and giving it the consideration it deserves.

Watfordwoman · 05/05/2022 20:23

Just found this thread - I’m in Watford too - interesting to read the responses from the Candidates as well as fellow Watford Residents! If any Watford Women are interested in campaigning on this issue locally, please tag me - we are a small but very vocal group of women who believe women are oppressed on the basis of our sex. No to self ID! We also do what we can to make sure that the Protected Characteristic Under the EA are accurately identified - alas an ongoing battle - who knew asking for an equality impact assessment would be so controversial

I was at an online hustings for the candidates and know Asif (Labour) and have been at various forums with Peter (Lib Dems) over the years. Locally at least the Lib Dem Peter is likely to be a clear winner

Magenta82 · 06/05/2022 08:56

Hi @Watfordwoman I would be very interested! thanks!

Well the LibDem has just got re-elected with a comfortable majority, despite his trans waffle.

We also do what we can to make sure that the Protected Characteristic Under the EA are accurately identified - alas an ongoing battle - who knew asking for an equality impact assessment would be so controversial

This is the important battle, I think. Just banging a notice on the Ladies - Gender Neutral does not make them so.

MishyJDI · 09/05/2022 20:04

That is a great result for democracy and shows the general public are more open to diversity and not tolerant of fear mongering. So pleased my vote helped!

I0NA · 09/05/2022 20:34

Oh @MishyJDI you have the best jokes 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Taking away rights from women and girls, especially Muslim and Orthdox Jewish women is just SO inclusive dahling .

Axahooxa · 09/05/2022 20:40

Labour.

Watfordwoman · 09/05/2022 22:59

@MishyJDI do you really think this is why Peter was re elected???

Watfordwoman · 09/05/2022 23:22

@MishyJDI what is a woman?

Magenta82 · 10/05/2022 11:49

I would say his re-election has more to do with Watford being a solid Lib Dem council with a very organised local campaign group, than his position on women's rights.

No one but a Lib Dem has Ben elected since the position was created.
