I have been following this, not as closely as I would if I lived in Australia, but closely enough.
I have been very disappointed in the way the media has responded to this. There is one political editor, Samantha Maiden, that has released something attacking Katherine Deves nearly every day. Much of what is reported is over hyped and sensationalised without any of the intended context discussed.
The latest misinterpreted facts from one of the Endocrinologists entering into the sports debate are being repeated over and over in the national level media without any ‘fact checks’ done. Dr Ada Cheung has been very successful in promoting propaganda and not facts.
And yet, as usual many Australians see right through the biased media and are supporting the issues Katherine Deves advocates when polled. Just like here in the UK. The majority support bolstering the rights for women and girls, for females is more precise, where they conflict where males wish to be included or be prioritised.
That steadfast support of the majority must be infuriating to see.
It is unfortunate that some of Katherine’s tweets were tweets where she says things that she now regrets how she framed them. It detracts from the tweet that were straight to the point and that could not be portrayed as ‘anti’ anything.
I doubt she will win the seat against Zali Steggall but she has thrown this debate wide open and the National media pundits are fighting to minimise it.
What always continues to surprise me though is the number of people who are so focused on ‘left wing’ ‘right wing’ media forget that in Australia, News Corp covers both. Sky Australia has been discussing this for a couple of years now. Very clearly.
Yet, Samantha Maiden is the political editior for the printed papers of News Corp (and online) which include the Telegraph which had always (not sure for past five years) appealed more to the trade union member who is not ‘right wing’ the way I see that term used over and over on mums net and by activists attempting silence women discussing these issues.
(It is partly why I roll my eyes at anyone trying to stick all Murdoch media into the same box. They have never fit in the same box. Except the box that makes money.)
