Just now in the House of Commons:

For those who don't do Twitter:

Strong words from Sajid Javid following a Q from James Sunderland MP on the Cass review into GIDS:

"NHS services in this area...overly affirmative, bordering on ideological"

Reassuring to hear the Sec State for Health is listening to those who have raised concerns.

Yes I watched it. Excellent q from James Sunderland MP, and a great response from the Health Secretary.

tabbycatstripy · 19/04/2022 16:05

Punched the air.

FOJN · 19/04/2022 16:09

This is such good news. I'm just sorry it's too late for too many.

Juggins2 · 19/04/2022 16:13

That's fantastic
(I'm left wing and always gone on about hating the tories - but if they're getting this right I am just sooo relieved).

DomesticatedZombie · 19/04/2022 16:21

YES!

ResisterRex · 19/04/2022 16:42

I would echo FOJN's words. And I am relieved that this government - on this topic - does seem to be listening and does seem to want to address this problem. They could have gone the other way and they didn't. In part that's also down to us. Every single person who took their own time and effort to look at this and write to their MP.

I also always - most of all - think of the detransitioners when we see these kinds of words from politicians. They've braved all sorts to raise the alarm and stop others from going through what they did.

Points of concern raised by James Sunderland:

  1. The Cass Review Interim Report, found that to date there is a profound lack of evidence on the best approach to treat gender dysphoria in children.
  1. In spite of this, the NHS insists on making a child's expressed 'gender identity' the start point for treatment.
  1. Surprised that the NHS has chosen so far not to track patient outcomes... particularly for under 18's.

So far from Javid's need to make sure that there is holistic care that's provided, and that all medical interventions are based on the best clinical evidence.

I wonder if there will be inquiries set up to investigate how medical care for minors was so lacking in duty of care, and who was responsible for pushing it or/and looking the other way.

I don't understand his saying that current gender affirming policy is "bordering" on ideological. To my mind is is clearly ideological. Am I missing some nuance?

It could be read as an accusation against health care providers from a politician at his level. He might not be quite up for that.
SallyLockheart · 19/04/2022 17:39

They have the interim report and probably want the final report so that they can say with certainty that it has been led by (Stonewall) ideology to the detriment of clinical care. I think we can confidently say the report will not reverse the conclusions made in the interim report but as Secretary of State for health, he has to be seen to be impartial up to a certain point.

tabbycatstripy · 19/04/2022 17:56

It’s good language. Makes him sound measured (even though we all know it’s ‘bordering on ideological’ like the Sahara desert is ‘bordering on warm’).

bellinisurge · 19/04/2022 18:20

Good. Don't care if he's a despicable fucking Tory. This is now on the Parliamentary record. They can't pretend they don't know. More sunlight

ResisterRex · 19/04/2022 18:33

The Mail have picked this up:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10732271/Javid-slams-NHS-gender-services-children-claims-practices-bordering-ideological.html?fr=operanews

More importantly as bellini says, it'll be in Hansard

SilverGlassHare · 19/04/2022 18:47

I do hate agreeing with the Tories. Glad some politicians at least are showing common sense though!

I bloody hope so.

Ditto.

I think labelling it outright ideological in Parliament would cause too many issues.

I do think there will end up being some nuance for care as much as I don't believe in the ideology at all. The tidal wave is too big sadly. Apart from anything it's entry reasonable at this point to be taking a middle road of balance in order to get that best care in place - which should result eventually in no affirmation child transitions till adulthood.

The tangle with nhs, stonewall, education plus the social narrative etc is so huge I unfortunately feel it has to be a middle road in order for those important alternative voices and messages to be heard in a sane and balanced way that will be taken seriously.

I agree. Look at the way that the BBC and Guardian are covering the brouhaha around The Family Sex Show — it's expedient for Javid to word it this way because respectable media organisations are maw-worming in the most extraordinary way on this and related controversial topics.
