www.thenational.wales/news/20073799.leanne-wood-trans-rights-ehrc-guidance-single-sex-spaces/

"Being trans in the UK is fkg agony right now."

My friend’s words last week following publication of guidance for separate and single-sex service providers by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission. She goes on: "So now the EHRC want to help people exclude me from taking a piss in a bathroom that I’m comfortable in".

This looked interesting (only for subscribers though which I am not). Does anyone have a share token? 2 comments so far which are sceptical of the piece.

Is this the one that Debbie Hayton's thread is about?

Is it because you can only read the into?

Do you really want to read it all?

tabbycatstripy · 18/04/2022 22:13

Yeah, it has to be hard when you’ve been able (for years) to use whatever bathrooms you prefer and now people have started to object. But it’s how we got here that they need to consider. Personally I don’t care about toilets. My support for the EHRC’s new position is a direct result of the aggressive trans activist campaign to remove all single sex spaces. I can’t accept men in women’s prisons or in women’s sports, and in order to hold a consistent position, I have to assert that people can’t really change sex. I feel my hand was forced because I’d prefer never to have had to say anything.

Women were generally accommodating to transwomen before people started threatening to make them suck their lady dicks.

FOJN · 18/04/2022 22:14

I hope Leanne pointed out to her friend that the EHRC was simply providing guidance in applying the law as it stands and her friend still has the full protection of the EA.

IstayedForTheFeminism · 18/04/2022 22:16

"So now the EHRC want to help people exclude me from taking a piss in a bathroom that I’m comfortable in".

Transwomen being allowed to piss in the women's toilets makes (some) women uncomfortable. Or do they not matter?

mudgetastic · 18/04/2022 22:16

Because we need everyone to be comfortable taking a piss and if Leanne's friend isn't comfortable with males why does this person expect others to be so ?

‘Mumsnet provides a platform for bigotry to fester’ apparently…. trans people are more oppressed than anyone else ever had been… yada yada, usual emotive shite Hmm

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 18/04/2022 22:18

I found it readily on the usual sites. YMMV but this section caught my eye as indicative of the overall pitch and quality of the piece.

According to the research, trans people are twice as likely to be subjected to conversion torture as gay and bisexual people were.

The persecution doesn’t stop there. The EHRC, fast becoming the right wing’s weapon of choice, is a vocal critic of the Scottish government, belatedly trying to do the fair thing and allow trans people to self identify rather than go through the current protracted and painful process.

Linguini · 18/04/2022 22:22

I'll have some fun without a full copy-and-paste...

Select quotes direct from article:

Allow trans people the right to self identify without going through a torturous bureaucratic procedure...
Latest attack on trans people [to deny this is]... one of the cruellest acts....causing suicidal thoughts.

Trans people twice as likely to be subjected to conversion torture as gay and bisexual people...

The persecution doesn’t stop there...
Allow trans people to self identify rather than go through the current protracted and painful process.

Times of culture wars...a public is slowly being radicalised against trans people, according to Craig McLean

A powerful grouping has emerged, comprising wealthy American evangelical bodies..

Celebrities such as JK Rowling, politicians across parties and parliaments, fora such as Mumsnet and Twitter provide the spaces for the bigotry to fester.

My friend runs school workshops.... She recently received a letter from a child who wrote: ‘I just want to say that I look up to you greatly and I hope to be able to be proud and open like you too some day,’

It is our responsibility to make that day happen.

DomesticatedZombie · 18/04/2022 22:26

Outrageous hyperbole and misinformation.

'According to the research, trans people are twice as likely to be subjected to conversion torture as gay and bisexual people were.'

There are no links to this research, of course. I doubt Leanne wants anyone to look too closely at it.

'Celebrities such as JK Rowling, politicians across parties and parliaments, fora such as Mumsnet and Twitter provide the spaces for the bigotry to fester. '

As ever, if anyone sees any bigotry on Mumsnet (festering or otherwise), do report it.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 18/04/2022 22:29

As ever, if anyone sees any bigotry on Mumsnet (festering or otherwise), do report it.

If it's festering report it but if it's fulminating it's definitely time to tell whichever police force it is that has a squad of detectives monitoring us (which one is that, again?) to swoop in.

Absurdle · 18/04/2022 22:32

'According to the research, trans people are twice as likely to be subjected to conversion torture as gay and bisexual people were.'

That sliding and eliding of definitions again. The worst instances of conversion therapy are torture so let’s rename it to conversion torture, meanwhile let’s redefine every instance of a parent or clinician saying “are you sure this is what you want?” as conversion therapy, et voila, you have your latest emotional blackmail statistic.

I don’t think the public have adapted yet to this level of blatant falsehood from activists. It’s worrying.

Absurdle · 18/04/2022 22:36

(Have they been able to dig up a single instance of a trans person being subjected to actual “conversion torture”? I’m assuming it would be headlines for days if there was any known example of it ever happening.)

Somanysocks · 18/04/2022 22:38

I think the tra's need to look up the definition of bigot and look towards themselves regarding the direction of hate and violence.

Helleofabore · 18/04/2022 23:01

DomesticatedZombie

Outrageous hyperbole and misinformation.

Indeed.

grey12 · 19/04/2022 05:26

I agree with @tabbycatstripy there was no issue with transwomen before 🤷🏻‍♀️ because they were expected to be respectful of ciswomen, and knew when to make the transition from men's to women's toilets. New laws seem to accept anyone in any stage to make that change! This is what makes women very uncomfortable......

NitroNine · 19/04/2022 06:04

Ah yes, Stonewall’s handy Trans people are nearly twice as likely to be targeted by conversion practices - that makes no mention of what they are including under the “conversion practices” umbrella. I assume the stats they are referring to are that 2% of gay and lesbian respondents said they [had] undergone conversion therapy, with 5% reporting they had been offered it. In comparison, 4% of transgender respondents said they had received it, and 8% said they had been offered it.*

It might be terribly cynical of me, but I have a sneaking suspicion that “conversion practices” here = “anything other than instant & absolute affirmation”. Certainly the way the survey was designed means respondents were using their own definitions - & we all know about how “literal violence” works, for example Hmm It also seems hugely counter-intuitive that more trans people would be offered &/or receive conversion therapy when transitioning is considered an acceptable “cure” for homosexuality by multiple demographics who utilise LGB conversion therapy Hmm

There are some pretty big issues with the data - or rather, lack thereof - on the prevalence of conversion therapy in the UK. Including the fact nobody asked if people were being offered conversion therapy for their gender identity or their sexual orientation. So it’s - genuinely, seriously - entirely possible that nobody has ever been offered trans conversion therapy in the UK at all; & it’s simply the case the higher visibility (as it were) of trans people has made them obvious targets for LGB conversion therapy, hence the way the stats skew.
