Does anyone have any examples of companies or charities that could be used instead of stonewall to provide training in the workplace on LGBTQ issues please?

I think they have the market pretty sewn up a quick google doenst bring much up but I'd be keen to I explore alternatives ...

I don’t. I don’t understand why companies need training in these issues.

They need training in the Equality Act.

Crouton19 · 11/04/2022 22:55

Simon Fanshawe has his own D&I firm which might offer training. He also has a very good book out!

How about using common sense?

nepeta · 11/04/2022 23:04

I don't know of any alternatives, but I would have thought that any corporation would consider the rights of all its employees and not just some.

For instance, if Stonewall urges that the word 'mother' not be used, the HR people should think what erasing that word means for the female employees whose gender identities are embodied.

If you want to help your organisation comply with the law, I’d contact a barrister who specialises in equality law and ask them to do a talk for your organisation.

If you’re on a muddle over the trans row then LGB Alliance might be worth a look, or Transgender Trend / SafeSchoolsAlliance could probably supply training material on these issues or point you in a better direction.

I think there is a huge problem with organisations, particularly schools but also publishers etc, throwing money at random self-appointed experts to tick the ‘inclusivity’ box, instead of doing their own research and reaching their own opinions and forming their own policies. Who has the authority and expertise really to speak for lesbians and also gay men and also gender dysphoric children? No one. No one is lesbian and also gay and also gender dysphoric. There is no “LGBQT community” it isn’t a culture, race, or club, and there are conflicts of interest between for example lesbians and transwomen.

If you’re asking “who can give me training” you’re asking the wrong question. It should be “how can I help my organisation perform its function optimally and fairly in compliance with Equality law?” And you can answer they question yourself without paying someone else to come in and tell you what to think.

They need training in the Equality Act.

A lot of the time it's requirements from clients/customers.

We do business with lots of European firms and U.K. Government departments and most have some requirement or other that our staff complete Diversity and Inclusion/Equality & Diversity training.

FemaleAndLearning · 11/04/2022 23:30

Inclusive Employers is another one to avoid. They are just like Stonewall. Cis that, gender this, same gender attracted, assigned sex at birth. They have a poster you can put up that explains cis is not a slur and perfectly acceptable to use. Yes, if you believe in gender identity but if you don't then it is not acceptable.
Sorry don't have a company to offer as an alternative.

mealdeal20 · 12/04/2022 10:00

Thanks all, I will look into the suggestions.
It would be a requirement for our clients that we complete some sort of D&I training, hence looking for alternatives rather than looking into employment law ect

OP I think you've highlighted a real gap in the market here. Whilst I agree with @Neverreturntoathread that "I think there is a huge problem with organisations......throwing money at random self-appointed experts to tick the ‘inclusivity’ box, instead of doing their own research and reaching their own opinions and forming their own policies", it seems that so many companies are scared of making decisions, and seemingly the process of pulling in an external provider (currently Stonewall) ticks a box whilst devolving them of any actual responsiblity to think themselves, or indeed to make sure that they take into consideration alternative views.

I've just questioned the people I hold my pension with, as they are working with Stonewall and are proud to be Stonewall diversity champions. They said that they use Stonewall "to help us with advice when we do not have the expertise internally" and that they are proud to be Diversity Champions as it "provides us with access to additional tools, resources, expertise and best practice". With regards to their recently launched Trans and Non-Binary Equality Policy, they said that Stonewall "provided us with advice on various aspects of the policy and this external experience and expertise was beneficial".

Whilst I disagree with taking Stonewalls advice on as best practice, the above does show that companies just want someone to tell them what to do - hence there is a gap in this market that hopefully someone with sense will dive into, so companies can have a choice of "experts" to turn to.
