Praised for her forthrightness, then subsequently asked whether women can have a penis, the Rt Hon MP declined to give a direct answer, but replied that certainly some women are adult human females, but some women are born in the wrong gender and are very distressed and it is somewhat disgraceful of the Prime Minister to try and make points in the culture war'

I really can't understand why this basic question is difficult for intelligent women to answer.

Um lockhillie I can think lot of things to say about Johnson and I agree with his statement a few days back, but 'respect for women and girls' is hardly the first thing I would reach for when considering the lufe choices of that duplicitous shit.

PermanentTemporary · 08/04/2022 11:20

I'm not going to expose people I know, but Helen Belcher and Laura Moran are not the only Lib Dems and there are plenty of people in the party who are fully aware that gender ideology as it is currently applied and liberalism are poles apart.

I'm not interested in getting caught up in purity spirals, his statement showed his passion for our safety and that's what matters.
PermanentTemporary · 08/04/2022 11:27

Fair dos lockhillie. I certainly considered the same action.

onanotherday · 08/04/2022 11:43

@lockhillie

And then there's morality. It's incredibly important to me that the people I vote for are decent human beings.

Boris is a decent human being, he's shown the upmost respect for women and girls when others haven't.

Best laugh I've had today!!

Seriously I really hope the Labour Party get their act together.

There is no issues in respecting and supporting people who identify as they wish.

But that does not stop Labour from also recognising women's concerns. Ian be flamed , but offering non gendered loos and safe places seems that way forward.

Transmen/women are different from 'cis' and that is just science. But doesn't value their struggle or trauma.

BacklashBacklash · 08/04/2022 11:55

I don't understand the logic of voting Tory for this issue. They might not be going to bring in self id, but under their governance, most institutions have already been captured and they didn't attempt to do a damn thing to stop it. There are already male sex offenders in female prisons. Male crimes are being reported as women's. I can't vote Labour right now but sure as hell won't be voting for the party who are making hay off the issue because they know their popularity is down thanks to all the illegal partying they did while the rest of us couldn't meet a friend outside.

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 08/04/2022 11:59

@onanotherday

Most women are not cis. Do you also think those women are also protected in in ideology which prevents any keeping of records which could show their medical outcomes, experiences of violence, poverty etc.? How can you protect a group of people if you don't have the language to describe them? Bear in mind that as per the aborted anti conversion therapy guidance, if you call women cis when that's not how they identify, this would meet TRAs definition of conversion therapy.

Peregrina · 08/04/2022 12:17

Let's start to turn this round. Start asking Emily Thornberry and the like how many transmen are accepted without question into all male clubs?

How many transmen/boys has Eton or Radley accepted as pupils? Say in the sixth form when most boys will have gone through puberty. After all they are men aren't they?

Let's cut out this word Cis - women is fine as a description although maybe we should make it wimmin.

Don't be fooled into voting Tory because they know what a woman is. They have been in power for twelve years now, they could stop sending transwomen to women's prisons, right now if they chose. Judge them by their actions, not their words. We know that Boris Johnson has a loose tongue and says the first thing which comes into his head.

SerendipityJane · 08/04/2022 12:24

@lockhillie

I agree with Teawam, the only way to guarantee the safety of women and girls moving forwards is to vote Conservative.
Who are so good at keeping manifesto pledges ?

Fuck that.

Peregrina · 08/04/2022 12:28

I agree with Teawam, the only way to guarantee the safety of women and girls moving forwards is to vote Conservative.

So have they emptied out female prisons of transwomen then? Until they do, many women prisoners will not feel safe.

KohlaParasaurus · 08/04/2022 12:52

The Tories have a distinguished history of telling the electorate what we want to hear then reneging on it. It's happening in front of our noses with tax increases right now. I'm pleased that the Prime Minister has added his voice in support of women. We NEED people with actual influence on our side and there's no point being squeamish about who those people are. But I'm not sure I'd trust the Tories at the ballot box with a pro-women manifesto.

Fenlandia · 08/04/2022 12:58

Lots of us on this board may have trans relatives or friends we care deeply about. Doesn't mean I'm going to chuck away my critical thinking, my own rights, children's right to safeguarding, or the rights of those trans people to compassion and evidence-based healthcare

Thornberry getting praise from Louis Staples (writes for Vice), with Staples saying: “ Emily Thornberry delivering, by some margin, the best answer to the infuriating "can women have a penis?" question proves that having "gay faces in high places" like Wes Streeting is largely pointless if they aren't going to be effective advocates in difficult moments.”

How insulting is that? Streeting has been in politics most of his adult life. He’s not a pet. Personally I’d like to see him take a stronger position, but it’s just rude to imply he needs to assume certain political positions because of his sexuality.
