Republican Rep Jim Olsen, who authored the bill, said he was "thrilled" by its passage and said the legislation could see "many lives of babies saved".

And will you support their mothers in feeding, educating and supporting these lives, Jim? It seems that you regard these babies as pristine vintage comics - valueless once they've been removed from their wrappers.

Women are described as medical refugees in this article. Appallingly accurate.

It's awful. I can only see the situation in the US getting worse. Women and girls there are attacked from all sides.

donquixotedelamancha · 06/04/2022 08:39

Presumably these bills beak federal law (Roe vs Wade) and will eventually be struck down by the supreme court?

I know the court leans conservative now but I can't see how a near total ban is remotely compatible with legal precedent.

littleburn · 06/04/2022 08:44

It's appalling. Makes me very grateful that the religious right doesn't have a foothold here.

Peregrina · 06/04/2022 08:48

And we just know that the Senators which passed this legislation will hot foot it to another State which allows abortions if they get their mistresses pregnant or their underage daughter gets pregnant.

It stinks of misogyny and hypocrisy.

beattieedny · 06/04/2022 08:53

I am an observant religious woman and, while I personally think abortion is a sin, its not up to me or people with my beliefs to ban it. I find it horrific that it occurs but also horrific that women are forced to be pregnant against their will. I think of my young daughter and her being in that situation. I would expect she'd have her child and I'd encourage it, but I would not ever, ever remove the choice. I'd look after her whatever she chose. Because all that happens is poverty, or self abortion which is deadly to the mother often. America is lost to the left and right extremes. I am grateful that Britain is sensible about it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/04/2022 10:02

Completely agree Ova and yes, glad we don't have the same political landscape here.

Life is hard enough for so many people and yet there are people who are so convinced of their moral compass that they are campaigning to make it so much worse for others.
ScreamingMeMe · 06/04/2022 10:49

It's horrendous. And threatening prison for providers too! I can imagine some desperate women taking very dangerous measures Sad

ChopinBoard · 06/04/2022 11:01

This is going to end very badly for very many women

They’re trying to get a test case to the Supreme Court in the hopes that the current court will decide that Roe v Wade was wrong.

Has Judge Brown been sworn in yet? She may not be able to say publicly what a woman is but at least she is likely to vote against efforts to overturn RvW.

I've asked people on FB about this and they all dodge the question. They're not remotely interested in helping and supporting the often vulnerable women that are affected by this legislation. Their nastiness soon comes out when challenged, along the lines of 'they should have kept their legs together' or 'they're putting out with loads of guys'.

It's deeply misogynistic and unpleasant. And many of them are not called Jim but Linda or Kathleen, which depresses me even more.

JellySaurus · 06/04/2022 12:47

I wonder whether any of these Lindas or Kathleens have carried to term a child with anencephaly, or been forced by an abusing partner to carry pregnancy after pregnancy, or been raped in the way home from school or work?

Caroline Farrow and CitizenGo are worming their way in.

There's a thriving commercial adoption market in the US, so I'm sure many of these mothers will be persuaded to give up their babies to 'better', god-fearing homes.
ComDummings · 06/04/2022 16:41

Why do these people ‘care’ so much about unborn foetuses yet don’t give a shit about them once they’re born. It’s weird.

nepeta · 06/04/2022 16:49

The US situation is truly dreadful for women. A microcosm example of that came up in the Texas abortion bill where the pregnant woman was called 'a host body'. At least one female politician on the progressive side then used 'menstruators' as the preferred term for those who might need abortions (though of course pregnancy tends to stop periods).

So the humanity of the female sex is now up for deletion from both sides of the political aisle, though of course the two sides are not the same in everything having to do with female people's rights.

Still, it's a horrible situation when one side wants to crush women's rights based on women being biologically female and the other side wants to maintain some rights but wants to crush the very idea that there is a female biological sex (so that Washington state, e.g. allows any male prisoner to identify into women's prisons and also makes it impossible for anyone to find out how many have done so and what the consequences might be for female prisoners.)

MrsOvertonsWindow · 06/04/2022 17:47

It feels so hopeless looking at what's happening there.

EdithStourton · 06/04/2022 20:58

What makes the situation in the US worse is the sheer size of many US states. A good 60% of them are approx the size of England or bigger (some are much, much bigger: Texas is bigger than France).

If you live in Oklahoma City, it's about an hour and a half's drive to get out of the state, never mind to a town with an abortion provider.
