Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Response from Kate Green

NC for this one. I've emailed my local MP, Kate Green, to ask her position on self ID and womens spaces. Here is her response. Can you help break this down for me? I'm not sure what side of the fence she is on tbh.

*
Thank you for your recent contact.

I am hugely proud of Labour’s track record on equality and, as a feminist of many decades standing I am personally sympathetic to self-identification sitting alongside careful and robust safeguarding and risk management, which is in the interests of both individuals undergoing gender reassignment and the wider community.

Protections and safeguards for women only spaces do already exist though I readily recognise that they have not always been appropriately implemented. I have seen troubling cases on both sides of this particular coin.

The focus should be on ensuring that safeguards are systematically applied so I am very pleased that Labour has committed to ensuring that trans people can live their lives with equality, dignity and respect, and would update the Gender Recognition Act to enable a process of self-identification while continuing to support the implementation of the Equality Act, including ensuring that the single sex exemption is understood and fully enforced in service provision.

I hope this is helpful.

Kind regards

Kate Green

Yeah, the 'both sides' bullshite is being promoted heavily, everywhere. Elected officials are too cowardly to say 'women are receiving rape and death threats for...asking questions and that's unacceptable'. Hence, 'both sides'.

Nonsense and cowardly.

DomesticatedZombie · 04/04/2022 18:21

would update the Gender Recognition Act to enable a process of self-identification while continuing to support the implementation of the Equality Act, including ensuring that the single sex exemption is understood and fully enforced

'We will ensure the sex category is erased while also ensuring single sex exemptions are enforced'

DomesticatedZombie · 04/04/2022 18:22

The logical outcome of this is that males who wish to be put in single sex wards will still be put in single sex wards and if a woman is raped she can be assured that she will be told she was raped with a female penis, which I'm sure she'll find comforting.

respectmysex · 04/04/2022 18:43

Ok I've sent a reply. Disappointed etc etc, asked a few questions. Not going to hold my breath on this one.

My generation (baby boomers) vote in much greater numbers than youngsters.
And I would hazard a guess that the average female pensioner absolutely does NOT want to be greeted by a penis in her changing room. If Labour are chasing the naive/woke/young vote at the expense of my lot, they are in for a very disappointing election night!

Redshoeblueshoe · 04/04/2022 21:35

Well as you have written back I will too. I'm going to focus my letter on sports. I expect we will get matching letters again

DontLikeCrumpets · 05/04/2022 02:50

@Movingonup22

Do women have dicks Kate? Cause it’s the dicks that are the problem. Wot ya gonna do about that?
LOL! That should be a bumpersticker! Pure gold!
Motorina · 05/04/2022 03:43

I'm not sure what side of the fence she is on tbh.

That's cos she's doing her damndest to sit on both sits of the fence at the same time.

zanahoria · 05/04/2022 10:17

She is trying to park her arse on that fence, one cheek either side

Popuptent · 05/04/2022 11:10

I once wrote to my conservative MP on this subject and was sent a generic letter that was identical to emails sent out from other MPs in different constituencies.

Franca123 · 05/04/2022 12:10

I think this is just Labour's latest stab at a policy in this area. Doubt it's actually what she thinks. It's the party line as of a few days ago. It's gobbly gook. Could mean anything. Words don't mean anything to these sort of people. I'd entirely disregard it.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 05/04/2022 12:14

@Redshoeblueshoe

Oh she did sign the stupid letter - I think it was in The Observer a few years ago - from Fox and Owl or whatever they are called. As for sports she has actually said WOMEN MUST TRY HARDER.
Did she ????

I did a politics ‘which side’ type quiz the other day and i had to say what i thought was important in an MP

I didn’t put intelligent because i didnt feel i needed to

Epic mistake obviously

respectmysex · 05/04/2022 14:23

@Redshoeblueshoe excellent, I'm glad you are replying too, and on a different aspect to the issues I've raised. I'll update the thread with whatever reply I get, will be interesting to see if we get the same one, seeing as our issues are different.

So far I've just had the "I'm getting a lot of mail at the moment"
To me that translates as "Oh fuck - what are we going to say now"

respectmysex · 08/04/2022 19:33

I've had another reply from Kate Green that makes it much clearer where she stands.

Thank you for your email. I was appalled to read of the abuse and attacks you have experienced. Such behaviour is utterly indefensible.

I hope we agree that rights are not in competition with each other. The Equality Act, of which I am very proud, is crystal clear that both sex and gender reassignment are protected characteristics. In that context, as I said, protections and safeguards for women-only spaces quite rightly already exist – indeed, they have done for many years, for example in prisons or in hospitals, with risk assessments having been carried out and carefully and thoughtfully implemented. Of course, there have been some appalling failures and threats to women’s safety, which I deplore. As I know you will be aware, trans people also experience horrible abuse and violence. None of that is excusable.

However, having read the revised EHRC guidance, I do worry that it may move away from an inclusive approach to one that highlights why trans people might be excluded from services, increasing the risk of illegal discrimination against individuals. The focus should be on ensuring that safeguards are applied systematically and effectively.

I am glad that Labour has committed to updating the Gender Recognition Act, and I personally believe self-ID is important for trans people’s equality. We do need a full discussion of the detail of how that would work, including learning from other countries. I hope that discussion can take place in an atmosphere of respect and kindness.

More fudge than a Cornish souvenir shop.

FemaleAndLearning · 08/04/2022 19:42

We I think that reply is clear. Trans people need more rights. Women need to have men in their spaces as they will be risked assessed so that will be ok.

Redshoeblueshoe · 08/04/2022 19:46

Yes it's never men who are told to be kind
I wonder why that is?

LK1972 · 08/04/2022 19:50

'I hope we agree that rights are not in competition with each other. ' - well, Kate, sometimes they are, so sorry your 'hope' is misplaced. Is she even an MP, does she not know there's been, like, court cases about competing protected characteristics?

LK1972 · 08/04/2022 19:55

'I do worry that it may move away from an inclusive approach' = when nurses were told to gaslight women that no males were present, 'to one that highlights why trans people might be excluded from services' = yeah, 'coz they are males on female wards and women have eyes!

Franca123 · 08/04/2022 20:20

Ewwww. That's horrible. It's like they recognise the dangers but trans women's feelings are more important. At least it's all coming out now and we can see exactly where these people stand.

DelurkingLawyer · 08/04/2022 20:27

Those who are KG’s constituents may be interested to see the first person to indicate she will seek selection to replace her: www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/trafford-councillor-enters-race-next-23094496

Jo has made her GC views known previously (take a look at those supporting her candidacy here, which tells its own story twitter.com/Joanne13Harding/status/1493297981549912070?s=20&t=Tr4lFcg4lF8GbLowg1c6iQ) and her partner is a very vocally GC Labour member.

She’s been pretty quiet on GC issues on Twitter recently but has been accepted onto the Jo Cox Women in Leadership Programme which as we know is completely captured, so I don’t blame her for that.

FOJN · 08/04/2022 20:43

protections and safeguards for women-only spaces quite rightly already exist – indeed, they have done for many years, for example in prisons or in hospitals, with risk assessments having been carried out and carefully and thoughtfully implemented.

Why are risk assessments being carried out and carefully and thoughtfully implemented for women only spaces? Is it because they are not women only spaces?

Pixiedust1234 · 08/04/2022 20:56

First sentence - "interests of both individuals" who is she referring to??

It makes no sense at all, sounds like a typical TRA word salad imo.

respectmysex · 08/04/2022 21:52

@DelurkingLawyer thank you for the links that helps a lot with working out who to vote for in the next election. We definitely need more labour MPs who are GC and not captured.
