The UN has rejected Stonewall’s ‘dossier’ of evidence against the EHRC. It remains a grade A rated human rights organisation.

Good news and yes I'm laughing at those who thought they could do this.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 01/04/2022 13:30

It's bizarre how happy a thread title could make me.

Fantastic news.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 01/04/2022 13:42

Wow - the bricks are slowly being dismantled from the misogyny wall this week.
And a legal challenge from the fox killer would be great to ensure that the appalling treatment of children confused about which sex they are gets prime time coverage!

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 01/04/2022 13:45

thank goodness

i mean the answer to 'will the UN pander to a massive fucking tantrum?' should have been 'hell no', but nothing is a given these days, is it?

ResisterRex · 01/04/2022 13:59

Silence, fair maids. A man hath spake:

https://twitter.com/JolyonMaugham/status/1509875966117621768

I see the EHRC has issued a statement that the UN had "rejected a complaint by Stonewall and other groups who had questioned the EHRC’s independence and effectiveness and sought a special review of the EHRC’s 'A Status'."

This is the first we've heard of it.

We also have to say, the statement may not be the only way in which the EHRC has jumped the gun.

Even if the EHRC has got the inside track, and its failings haven't precipitated a special review, we expect it will be considered shortly for periodic review.

We are also aware of another leading group - speaking for another 'protected characteristic' - that is preparing a submission to GANHRI about the EHRC's increasing tendency to advance the Government's political agenda rather than protecting disadvantaged communities from it.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

Oh dear.

VestofAbsurdity · 01/04/2022 14:07

Here cometh the spin.

VestofAbsurdity · 01/04/2022 14:11

and Stonewall and Jolene aren't trying to force the EHRC to advance their political agenda.

Artichokeleaves · 01/04/2022 14:13

Yes but THEIR political agenda is ok! Impartiality and political capture is fine so long as the RIGHT politics is involved.

Sauce for the goose is never sauce for the gander.

bellinisurge · 01/04/2022 14:15

The fox killers " statement " is code for "I'm a fuckwit but if keep making noise no one will notice "

VestofAbsurdity · 01/04/2022 14:22

He's ever so upset he wasn't the first to know, isn't he? I mean he is the most importantest person ever in the whole wide world how dare they tell someone else first.

PronounssheRa · 01/04/2022 14:32

He is so terribly terribly important don't you know.

I'm astonished people still give GLP money

WeeBisom · 01/04/2022 14:59

Oh, haha, Jo hadn't heard about the UN's conclusion first, and so the EHRC has 'jumped the gun' in announcing it. Sure.

Also, he is trying to get the new conversation therapy law declared incompatible with the human rights act. This seems like a bonkers proposition. You can't say a law is incompatible with the HRA just because it isn't complete, or misses out a group you would like to be included. The question is...is the law as it currently stands incompatible with the HRA? Is he really going to suggest that a law which bans conversion therapy for gay people is inconsistent with the human rights act? How could that possibly be? The decision to exclude trans people is entirely a government decision and can't be reviewed by a court (one would have thought) but it's not going to stop him from trying.

DameHelena · 01/04/2022 15:07

Where is the actual news on this? I can't find it by googling.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/04/2022 15:08

That is surprisingly quick - I would have thought something like that would take months to consider. The Stonewall / GLP "dossier" must have been truly laughable to be dismissed out of hand like that.

And presumably all human rights orgs are subjected to periodic review Hmm...

Abitofalark · 01/04/2022 15:21

@DameHelena

All I know of is a News item on the EHRC website. published today:

"EHRC urges fresh start with critics after UN body rejects requests to review its status"

[In part: ]
"The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has encouraged critics to reset relations after the UN body that assesses national human rights institutions rejected a request by campaigners to review the EHRC’s international accreditation.

The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, through the Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA), last week rejected a complaint by Stonewall and other groups who had questioned the EHRC’s independence and effectiveness and sought a special review of the EHRC’s ‘A Status’.
The EHRC is now encouraging campaigners to work collaboratively with them to deliver a new three-year strategy to tackle some of the most significant equality and human rights challenges facing Britain today."

MidsomerMurmurs · 01/04/2022 15:25

Wasn't the fox killer involved with this?

Has he emailed his gullible marks financial donors saying BREAKING NEWS: WE WON again?

tabbycatstripy · 01/04/2022 15:36

He says the EHRC, by publishing the news that Stonewall’s ‘dossier’ has failed to achieve its desired result, are ‘attacking the organisations that defend trans people’.

Stonewall is a charity. It is a group of self-selected campaigners who are not legal experts in the field and not elected. The EHRC is a statutory body that is actually charged with protecting trans people. And women. Which they are trying to do.

And JM is nobody.

Wtaf?

I'm astonished he is a lawyer. His arguments are woeful.

Signalbox · 01/04/2022 16:16

@tabbycatstripy

I think the foxy one is busy threatening to sue the government to force it to include trans people in the conversion-therapy-that-has-nothing-at-all-to-do-with-therapy ban. 🦊
Oh please let this be true.
SamphiretheStickerist · 01/04/2022 16:25

He's always good for a giggle. It always surprises me that he pontificates so poorly, given his education and profession.

Awkwardy · 01/04/2022 16:27

The Stonewall / GLP "dossier" must have been truly laughable to be dismissed out of hand like that.

But it was 19 pages long, miss! And in a see-through folder and everything!

www.stonewall.org.uk/about-us/news/major-lgbtq-organisations-spark-international-review-ehrc

Seriously, though. All those signatories, Mermaids, Gires, Trans Actual, Stephen Place, Allsorts .. all of them. And no-one wanted to publish it? Must have been awful.

AlisonDonut · 01/04/2022 16:32

Is one of the directors of the GLP still a director of Mumsnet?

[Yes he is just checked Companies House].

PronounssheRa · 01/04/2022 16:33

I'm astonished he is a lawyer. His arguments are woeful.

His area of expertise is very narrow. As a tax barrister he used to advise the wealthy on how to avoid paying tax.
