Use of pronouns in article - help me out

Reading this, it looks like the Mail is using male pronouns for the time of the alleged offences. Then female ones once the person in question says they are now identifying as female. Styles is using "he", in evidence to the court.

I think that's what's happened here but wondered if I was reading it correctly.

It seemed more that they used “she” up to the point where he was to be put in the male prison estate, then fantasy gave way to reality. It will be interesting to see if it gets amended. The bold summary at the top is confusing as it mentions him by the obviously male name Pablo in the first line, then says “The transgender woman” in the next sentence, so it sounds like two separate people/incidents.

It's a very odd and confusing use of pronouns. Surely if they are using she/her at all it should be all the way through?

Yes the male estate decision does play a part. Perhaps this is a balance of reflecting preferred pronouns and legal decisions?

Why the confusion? This is all perfectly normal at this point in history ain't it?

Life now requires us to suspend disbelief.

At first I wondered if this was a reflection of gender fluid, which has no legal basis at all. But I don't think it is.

If the Mail is reflecting preferred identity at the time and then moving to what the law says, maybe that's a sign of a style / editorial change?

I thought it was interesting that Styles was able to use ‘he’ during his evidence even though the defendant now identifies as female. Rape victims have been made to use ‘she’ when talking about a trans identifying male perpetrator. What could possibly be different here?
