I've recently dabbled in this topic and found my way here as there really doesn't seem to be anywhere else I can post something and get an wide response.

I have watched a few of the wesc panels, and I've been kind of flipping from one side to the other, I understand its much different on twitter, however the wesc debates seemed quite dry.

Somebody shared this with me from one of the trans contributors, but I dont fully get it, it seems to be a work of parody, but I'm quite new to this, so most of it has gone over my head.

Can anyone break it down for me?

Confess I haven't read it, just the comments above. Alex's reputation precedes.

But the reason the analogy doesn't work is that women are the only oppressed group in patriarchy. Women are the resource.

Some men - particularly gender-non-conforming - may be collateral damage and end up discriminated against in a patriarchy. But men aren't interested in controlling gay men or crossdressers. They don't need them. They just need to not get in the way of the control of the women. Men disrupting gender roles traditionally got in the way of using gender to oppress women.

But this trans movement shows a way that gender-non-conforming men can end up firmly on the farmer's side. Use their gender non-conformity as a stick to beat women with.

(And there are other modern issues like gay men feeling entitled to use women as surrogates - again, women are the resource).

Jane Clare Jones writes about this oppression/discrimination distinction a fair bit.

Although, of course, how much can you say that getting your kicks from dressing as the subordinate women role (but not acting it - no submission required), forcing women to play along, and getting praise for it is "gender non-conforming" any more? That's now an officially-approved male role. It's fully conforming.

Those men have been given a patriarchally-approved outlet that lets them conform.

Punctuation is awful. Just a way of calling GC feminists 'cows'. Badly written tripe.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/03/2022 11:28

You'd expect better from an esteemed professor of law, really. The average 14 year old would do a much better job of both the writing and the allegory.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/03/2022 11:29

Oh you must, just to get the full effect.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/03/2022 11:46

@Ereshkigalangcleg

This person is a professor of law.
Yes, and a barrister. Involved in the Good Law Project with the Foxkiller.

For those who haven't seen it, here's the Edinburgh Action on Trans Health Manifesto. A great favourite of mine. edinburghath.tumblr.com/post/163521055802/trans-health-manifesto We demand medical training to enable us to safely carry out medical procedures & research for each other, for anyone of us who wants to learn is a highlight.

We demand immediate release & pardon for all trans prisoners is the final demand. A carefully considered demand, which would of course not lead to a tsunami of transitions amongst prisoners, no sirree.

Waitwhat23 · 22/03/2022 12:04

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g that manifesto is a thing of wonder in its absurdity. Every time I read it, I think that it must be some very clever satire but it actually appears to be entirely genuine.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/03/2022 12:19

I know! Every time I go looking for it, I expect to find a sane person has finally had it removed, but here we are, years on, still there. Amazing.

Artichokeleaves · 22/03/2022 13:31

Necessary that was refreshing as Jane always is!

Please can someone on Twitter tweet this article to Jane? I can just imagine her rolling up her sleeves to address it. Grin

An actual professor of law. Give me strength.

Eresh, I trust your judgement, and it's not April 1 yet, so I will.

Let's hope you've not just withdrawn the last of your reputational capital, Stonewall style...

I guess I did quite enjoy the Action on Trans Health thing, so if this is in the "readers who enjoyed this also enjoyed..." recommendations box, let's do it.

ArcheryAnnie · 22/03/2022 13:50

That was exhausting to read, and I entirely agree that even the "author" had got fed up about halfway through writing it.

Women are cows. And "shrill". And apparently frigid. Gotcha.

NecessaryScene · 22/03/2022 13:56

Nope, Eresh just wanted me to suffer.

Oh it is. Give "Wages for Transition" a try too. And maybe Jess Bradley's spoken word poem "My Impossible Vagina", available on YouTube.

Just stop it, Eresh.

I hate you.

Call me childish, but every time a TA starts with nonsense like this I can feel myself wanting to shout "I know you are but what am I!!!!" like we used to in school...

Here, Necessary - try this, it might cheer you up:

Not the first professor to gradually stop displaying their academic qualities after they swap their original specialism for a new one about themselves post-transition...

The Who?
I’ve nothing to add to this thread but that joke is a work of art.
