A woman burst onto Russia’s main live evening newscast today with a sign that says:

“Stop the war
Don’t believe propaganda
They’re lying to you”

And chanting: “Stop the war! No to war!”

The anti-war protester who crashed the news broadcast is Marina Ovsyannikova, an editor at Channel One, says @pchikov, whose legal defense foundation is going to defend her against charges of “discrediting the Russian armed forces.” She’s already at the police station.

Ovsyannikova also appears to have recorded a video beforehand in which she blames Putin for the war and apologizes for her work on Russian state TV news.

"What's happening in Ukraine is a crime, and Russia is the aggressor. The responsibility for this aggression lies with one man: Vladimir Putin. My father is Ukrainian, my mother is Russian, and they were never enemies. This necklace [shows] Russia must stop this fratricidal war."

"Unfortunately, for the last few years I've been working for Channel One. I've been doing Kremlin propaganda and I'm very ashamed of it – that I let people lie from TV screens and allowed the Russian people to be zombified."

"We didn't say anything in 2014 when it only just began. We didn't protest when the Kremlin poisoned Navalny. We just silently watched this inhuman regime. Now the whole world has turned away from us, and ten generations of our descendants won't wash off this fratricidal war."

I am speechless at her bravery.

Russians are trying to fight back. I saw a video where they changed their protest as thousands were getting arrested. People turned up at major cities and just walked round and round the square, not saying or doing anything, but their presence was known and some still got arrested. For walking.

I've also seen a video the other day of people physically shoving police off protestors they had pinned to the ground and running away.

problembottom · 14/03/2022 21:44

An incredible woman.

CorneliusVetch · 14/03/2022 21:47

I’m so humbled by her bravery. She’s amazing but I feel sick thinking about what she has sacrificed to do this. Remarkable woman.

OhHolyJesus · 14/03/2022 22:26

That takes ovaries of steel, really truly brave as she must know the consequences will be serious.

Maybe her courage in speaking up will spread, maybe more will break ranks and take a stand.

FannyCann · 14/03/2022 23:25

Fantastic, what a brave woman.

Interesting discussion with two Russian women living in the U.K. here at about 49 minutes in.

FannyCann · 14/03/2022 23:28

Posted too soon. One of them take of her deep shame at not having done enough (through her journalism) to stop Putin.

UrsulaPandress · 14/03/2022 23:32

Incredible woman. Pray that she is safe.

nocoolnamesleft · 14/03/2022 23:32

Truly inspiring. I fear what price she will pay for her courage.

DuckDuckNo · 15/03/2022 08:15

Apparently she is now missing. :-(

DameHelena · 15/03/2022 08:19

Oh fuck. She's so admirable. I hope she'll be OK.
DomesticatedZombie · 15/03/2022 09:14

"Marina Ovsyannikova: Search for journalist who protested war on Russian TV - BBC News" www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-60749279.amp

Waitwhat23 · 15/03/2022 14:33

Someone upthread had asked if her colleagues had made any comment -

'Ms Ovsyannikova's colleagues at Channel 1 were reportedly surprised by her actions.

One told the Faridaily blog - run by former BBC Russian Service journalist Farida Rustamova - that Ms Ovsyannikova, who has two children, had never discussed politics, but spoke "mostly about children, dogs and the house".'

(Quoted from the article above)

Marina has appeared in court:

FannyCann · 15/03/2022 17:21

Discussed on radio 4 news just now.
Apparently she has been released with a fine of about $280 but the commentator said the feeling is it was a calculated decision not to let the news die down but he didn't think this would be the end of it.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 15/03/2022 17:25

That's good if she's been fined and released - but isn't that unusual? What's happened to all the other many thousands of brave Russians who've been arrested does anyone know?

OvaHere · 15/03/2022 17:29

That's good news in the short term. They are known for coming after people years or even decades in the future though.
Mischance · 15/03/2022 17:46

Fined and released - hmmm. I fear for her life - Putin has killed people over here in the UK and under our noses. She will not get off this lightly you may be sure. Because it was so public , they are temporarily playing to the media. When it all dies down I predict that she will vanish.

Should she live, I seriously think she should get the Nobel Peace Prize, I really do,

FannyCann · 15/03/2022 19:09

The guy on the news was as good as saying the same @Mischance

FannyCann · 15/03/2022 19:12

Also this: seems unlikely a journalist would only speak about dogs and children and the house. I'm guessing that's a safe answer for both the colleague and for Marina.

CorneliusVetch · 15/03/2022 19:20

I hope to God she leaves Russia and finds safe haven somewhere. She’s beyond heroic. Her protest has prompted other journalists to resign from state owned media, its had a real impact. I’ve been tearful all day thinking about her and what awaits her for this act of bravery.

ThisIsGroundControl · 15/03/2022 19:22

I can't put into words how awed I am by her bravery, to risk her life to do what is right is humbling. I pray she stays safe.

spacehardware · 15/03/2022 19:26

I also fear the fine is a token punishment to make the authorities look reasonable, and then something bad will happen to her quietly

PerkingFaintly · 15/03/2022 19:36

@spacehardware

This is my fear too.

I hope she can get out of Russia.

Mollyollydolly · 15/03/2022 19:44

There's just been a short item on Andrew Marr's LBC programme about the number of women in Russia that have been arrested for protesting, compared to men.
The woman with the blank sign, the woman with the 'two words' sign, Marina of course.
It was interesting - there was a Russian woman on talking about the very large economic and social disparities between the sexes in Russia and whether there's a burgeoning Feminist movement there. I could have listened to it for longer.
Brave women all.
