Interesting but also grim thread on this

It was a great event. Heartening to see all those detransitioners speaking up

PatsArrow · 13/03/2022 07:18

I was watching. I missed the Q&A as I really had to go to bed.

It was a really superb webinar. I was gripped by every speaker. Almost too much information to take in. Sinead Watson was incredible as ever.

The things that I'm left thinking about most today are what Helena said about teen Fandoms and 'shipping' and how it leads into (mainly girls) thinking your sex must be 'wrong' after fantasising so immersively about gay relationships and gay sex. Also how there is an 'oppression hierarchy' within these online communities where being a "cis het white girl" is considered the worst thing to be of all things, with no right to an opinion on anything.
With Helena's talk, I really got a good sense of how this happens and goes some way to answer the huge uptick in girls presenting at gender clinics.

Also, the two male Detransitioners were fascinating. They seemed very nervous and hesitant (understandably) - but it was vital to hear what they had to say.
The one boy who said he was a very femme gay boy and there was no place for him at school to be that. How he pretended he couldn't read so he could get extra reading lessons instead of rugby....how he was shown porn aged 9 by another pupil at school. This shocked him as he'd never even thought about female genitals before and how this made him fixate on them.

And what shocked me was the other Detrans male who was so focussed on fearing the male toxicity that he'd heard so much about that every time he had sex with his girlfriend he'd have an anxiety attack believing that he'd actually raped her, because he was a man.

I feel we need to hear much more about this.

Solidarityovercharity · 13/03/2022 07:39

Yes the guy who spoke about the rape anxiety really caught my attention. How has society got things so wrong?!

WarriorN · 13/03/2022 08:18

Gosh that sounds both awful and v powerful.

I wonder if kids hear too much from easy access media now?

I remember one detrans woman describing her impression of what it was to be female (awfulness) as a key motivation to transition. But I can see that the same can be for boys too.

A key factor repeatedly is open access to the internet and social media. We know how that has influenced young women on Instagram re self harming. My only hope is that these messages get through on there and detransitioners are included in all narratives about trans in order to help other young people.

WarriorN · 13/03/2022 08:19

Having said that, so many young people personally witness abuse and how women are treated or how men can be; the media just amplified it.

WarriorN · 13/03/2022 08:20

Experience and witness abuse

PatsArrow · 13/03/2022 08:56

Many of them were asked about the need to restrict the internet. It's mainly forums where this long, slow 'grooming' are happening. One of the Male Detransitioners said he was introduced to it all via a Pokémon chat room/forum.
Many of them said restricting the internet will not work. It will breed total resentment and they will get access anyway. They realise it's difficult but they recommend more attempts to discuss the realities of the internet with your child and make them aware of how many bad actors there are out there. Be aware of where they're hanging out on the internet as much as possible.

I agree restricting won't work. The narrative needs to change.

I echo all you say. I didn't know about the fandom stuff but it did help explain straight girls wanting to be boys/men. Heartbreaking to hear if the undiagnosed autism, mental health and trauma. Also bullying, abuse, sexual abuse, porn trauma and stereotype conforming. The videos should be released on you tube.
Solidarityovercharity · 16/03/2022 00:49

It's heartbreaking to see the detransitioners gathering force and yet we need their stories. I can't imagine how they feel. It would be great to see them receiving help with the establishment of a detrans clinic as a result of the Cass Review
