I've been binge-listening to the podcast "The Lovecraft Investigations" - really wonderful radio dramas by Julian Simpson. So clever, in that they tag onto real world facts and then go off in a mad occult fantasy. Good stuff, if you don't take this sort of thing too seriously.

I was idly googling to find out more about Julian Simpson, and found his website - where he recommends Hadley Freeman's recent piece for Unherd. He has a section called "Morning Pages' where he notes interesting stuff to start the day:

Lastly, Hadley Freeman's piece for Unherd "Why I stopped being a good girl" is cogent and well-argued. I went back and forth about posting this, because I know some people won't agree with a word of it. But, on balance, I think it's a solid piece of writing. I can't promise that everything you read on here will chime with your view of the world, but I think it's important to get both sides of the story, and this is one side articulated very well.

In a time when many interesting artists are sadly jumping on the "woke" bandwagon, I was pleasantly surprised to read this. It's moderate & couched with qualifiers ** but straightforward.

Anyway, good to know that one of my favourite radio writers is saying this!

** I don't blame anyone for being careful. I have had to be very careful myself, to keep my job.

It's a pleasant surprise to find that a writer working in that kind of genre crossover territory is grounded in material reality.

I expect you know about this:

Of his work, I'd say that so far my favourite has been Mythos:

Thanks, @nauticant and yes to those other dramas - I love Mythos. So funny & clever.

Oh I loved the Lovecraft series - beyond almost anything I've ever listened to. Thanks so much for the links to his other work.

I also thought the Hadley Freeman piece was brilliant.

I enjoy H. P. Lovecraft's stories and I've been reading through all of his works. I think it's really hard to adapt his stories into films etc because a lot of his stuff is about leaving things to the reader's imagination and building up the dread that way.
So I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the modern re-telling of his stories in the BBC podcast. And even better to know now that the radio show's writer is a sensible human being. Smile

And even better to know now that the radio show's writer is a sensible human being.

It's a nice feeling, isn't it?

Yes! I'm usually worried that some writer or artist that I like will turn out to be a numpty, so it's always a pleasant surprise these days to find out they are not!

Oh, that's so good to hear. Also, I had no idea he'd done other things. I have listened to the Lovecraft Investigations so many times so it's nice to know I can listen to something else by him.

For anyone looking to access more Pleasant Green-based plays, here's another source:

archive.org/search.php?query=subject%3A%22Julian+Simpson%22

In fact, if you're after any entertainment programme from Radio 4, searching in that archive is going to give you a reasonable chance of finding it.

Thank you! Housework is going to go faster now Grin
