NICE Pre-Term labour Draft Guidelines - Terminology

So NICE are putting out to Consultation their guidelines for pre-term labour. They have obviously acknowledged that a very small percentage of women who they will treat may identify as trans men but have chosen not to complicate or adjust the language within the entire document to reflect this.

In case you can't read the attached 1st page of the draft, it says:

'The Guidelines use the terms 'woman' and 'mother' throughout. These should be taken to include those women who do not identify as women but are pregnant or have given birth'

So they recognise that there are some who might object to this this terminology but they're explaining how they're not going to alter the biologically correct and societally accepted terminology because of the existence of this very small subset of people.

I think this is absolutely fine. Obviously certain trans men are not happy and are bandying about words such as 'media hysteria' and 'T**fs' on their Instagram stories. NICE should expect to hear from them very soon. I won't name them here but they're currently dealing with the aftermath of a Pre-Term birth and CS themselves (wouldn't wish that on anyone and am glad to see baby is thriving). They are being very open and are posting their birth story on their feed.

I really hope NICE don't cave into pressure to change this decision on the wording but it IS a consultation document. I also hope the actual detail and content of this draft document will not get bogged down because of this distracting issue. Thought I'd flag it up here anyway as I know some women on here might like to give their input to the consultation.

A link to the consultation itself can be found here www.nice.org.uk/guidance/indevelopment/gid-ng10245/consultation/html-content

I have a personal interest because I had decreased placental fluids from 33 weeks and was offered an induction at 37 weeks but ended up going to term with careful monitoring (but still ended up with an induction and then an emergency CS) Happy to say that it all came out right in the end Smile

Mothers covers most things nicely.

Mothers also covers transmen as it has been proven in the courts.

If they try to break down the language into people with bodily functions, it will take an awful lot of proof reading to spot the mistakes and unintended consequences. Mother is clear language.

I agree Melroses

I have seen this wording before (maybe another NICE document?). I think it is spot on.

I have noted that NICE uses sexed language in documents before. It appears to be at least one area if the NHS where common sense and standard biological knowledge rules. The RCOG also mostly use women/mothers etc at least in all the documents I have checked.

That sounds like the perfect way to approach it.
