Edinburgh considering period products for all people

nythbran2 · 27/02/2022 19:29

Edinburgh City Council is running a consulation on a proposal to offer people free period products. There are notices round town emphasising this is for all genders and all ages. I wonder if they would do better to suggest the products be targeted to women and girls?

There are no limits to their collective stupidity are there? Hmm

Viviennemary · 27/02/2022 19:32

They've gone mad.

DrWankincense · 27/02/2022 19:34

What exactly do women with a penis do with sanitary products 🤔? Ffs.

Olderbadger1 · 27/02/2022 19:36

Please don't ask DrWank - you really really don't want to know the answer.

Blogblogblogblog · 27/02/2022 19:38

Boys make airplanes out of the sanitary towels and try and see if the wings work.

Jackjack0962 · 27/02/2022 19:46

Ffs. That is beyond a joke.

They cover them with tomato sauce and stick them up their arse.

Well worth spending ratepayers' money on.

Lottapianos · 27/02/2022 20:03

I love Scotland and I lived in Edinburgh for two years so I find it beyond sad to see how badly they have lost the plot. For the love of actual sanity. Periods are not a joke, or a fetish, or anything other than a biological FEMALE process. I am seriously disgusted by this

DdraigGoch · 27/02/2022 20:05

I would like to think that any males picking up the free period products were merely collecting on behalf of a woman. But as it's Edinburgh, I'm not so sure.

TheMarzipanDildo · 27/02/2022 20:07

I’ve seen the signs up about town- I thought they were saying all genders welcome in the consultation process? So not quite the same thing (yet)

DrWankincense · 27/02/2022 20:16

@TheMarzipanDildo. Whilst that would make a bit more sense I'm still curious as to wtf men would have to contribute to that particular conversation.
Most of them don't have a clue about how many tampax or pads women get though.

And Scotland won't even know how many 'menstruators' it has to budget for, if it's going to record self-id 'gender' not sex on its census going forward.

Waitwhat23 · 27/02/2022 20:25

So City of Edinburgh Council -

  • have just signed up to a discredited lobby group which other organisations are leaving in droves
democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=150&MeetingId=6104
  • are spending millions on mixed sex toilets
mobile.twitter.com/ripx4nutmeg/status/1389461982651293698
  • and are now telling 'people' that they can access period products
consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/cf/periodproducts/ (And yes, gender and sex are conflated in that survey. Neither are the words women or girls used, at all).

So glad I moved out of Edinburgh.

MangyInseam · 27/02/2022 20:31

I'm not crazy about these kinds of initiatives, even without the stupid targeting.

People have hugely different needs and preferences for menstrual products. It makes far more sense for people to choose their own in the store.

rookiemere · 27/02/2022 20:43

It's an absolute joke.

There is a debate to be had if sanitary products should be provided for free to menstruating women who need them. But pretending everyone might need them regardless of age or gender is insulting to women quite frankly.

Well, quite. It’s irritating.

TheSandgroper · 27/02/2022 22:02

I was once reliably informed that tampons are excellent for germinating marijuana seeds. So, you know, lots of Edinburgh people would find a use for a freebie.

littlbrowndog · 27/02/2022 22:48

My country my city council

Both shite.

Supersee · 27/02/2022 22:56

I've never looked forward to a local election so much in my life (roll on May). Edinburgh is a state and the people running it couldn't run a bath.

dropthevipers · 27/02/2022 22:57

Just show how long w have been living in batshit mental land that this barely raises an eyebrow these days. How long ago would it have to be for this to cause everyone a double take?

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 27/02/2022 23:08

I honestly would be quite happy if it was advertised as free sanitary products for women, non-binary people and transmen.

Linucdaen · 28/02/2022 00:01

All genders and all ages? I’d be furious if I was a Scottish tax payer and this shit was coming out of my tax/council tax.

Redshoeblueshoe · 28/02/2022 02:19

I think that they should come with a warning

ANY MALE PEOPLE WHO ARE BLEEDING FROM THEIR VAGINAS NEED TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL HELP IMMEDIATELY !

Here ends the government health warning

Sexx · 28/02/2022 08:22

I've just completed the survey and made comments in every free text box about it only being relevant to women and girls and asking for and processing my irrelevant male opinion is a waste of resources.
I'm sure it will be ignored...

yetanotherusernameAgain · 28/02/2022 08:37

The survey itself doesn't mention 'people' at all - it has very straightforward questions asking if you're aware of the scheme, have used it, what products you would use, which locations, whether you would feel uncomfortable asking for the products etc. The only mention of gender is Q16 in the section asking for post code, gender, and age.

It's sad that the trans angle is completely overshadowing the benefit to women and girls - free access to period products is so innovative and we're not celebrating that, just looking at trans issues instead.
